Hayward progressing

Rookie forward Gordon Hayward recorded 30 minutes in the loss to Phoenix, tying a mark for his second-longest stint on the court all season. He responded well, hitting all five of his field goals, grabbing four rebounds and finishing with 14 points.

But he’s beginning to sound like a veteran when discussing a strong individual performance that was coupled with a losing team effort.

“I feel like I played better. But it’s still a loss, so that’s what gets at me,” Hayward, 20, said.

Butler 66, Detroit Mercy 51

INDIANAPOLIS — Shelvin Mack scored a career-high 32 points and Butler used a late 21-4 run to rally past Detroit, 66-51, tonight.

Shawn Vanzant added 12 points for the Bulldogs (18-9, 10-5 Horizon), and Matt Howard, who missed Thursday’s game after suffering a mild concussion Monday, had nine points and 12 rebounds in his return.

Ray McCallum and Nick Minnerath each scored 11 points to lead the Titans (14-14, 8-8), who have lost 10 straight to the Bulldogs.

Detroit took a 34-29 advantage into halftime and led, 44-43, with 10:17 to play. A tip-in by Andrew Smith 69 seconds later gave Butler the lead for good, and the Bulldogs pushed their advantage to 64-48 with 1 minute remaining.

During the run, Mack scored 14 points, including two of his six three-pointers, and Butler held Detroit without a field goal for 7:21.
