News On The Horizon 1/29/2018

The Morning Dish – Sunday, January 28, 2018--Hoopville
Today’s Menu: The Sunday before Super Bowl Sunday is a bit busier than the last few and has a good mix of conference showdowns and rivalry games.
...
Oakland chopped down one recent Horizon co-leader on the road on Friday when it won at Northern Kentucky. Now the Golden Grizzlies try to even a score and draw closer with Wright State, which won at OU earlier this month.

Further down, Wright State, Murray State, Bucknell, and Wyoming all entered the polls. Bucknell was there to start the year, but fell off the national radar with a string of early losses. The Bison have now won eight in a row, however, and are beginning to look like the Patriot League favorites again.

Speaking of conference favorites, Wright State has to be the safe bet in the Horizon League at this point. The Raiders are only a game ahead of Northern Kentucky but have already won on the Norse’s home court.

Here’s how it all shakes out. Do not @ us under any circumstances.

Wright State is back on the floor tonight after the Raiders suffered their first Horizon League loss earlier this week.

Jay Morrison writes the first thing the Wright State players did as a team after having their eight-game winning streak snapped Saturday at Milwaukee was sit down and watch a horror flick.

“They gave us Sunday off and then we came in Monday and watched the game film, and it was definitely hard to watch because we knew we didn’t play well and we lacked energy,” freshman center Loudon Love said. “If you want to be great, you have to give energy and effort all the time. And watching yourself not do it is a hard feeling.”

Downtrodden Detroit Mercy will be the opposition tonight with Oakland visiting the Nutter Center on Sunday afternoon.

Wright State 69, Youngstown St. 59: Wright State hung on after squandering an 18-point lead to top the Penguins in Youngstown.

WSU (16-6, 7-3 Horizon League) led 39-23 at halftime, then by 18 three different times in the first five minutes of the second half before YSU started rallying. The Penguins went on a 15-2 run to climb to within five late in the third period and eventually took a 56-54 lead with 3:45 left in the fourth. Wright State regrouped and outscored the Penguins 15-3 down the stretch.

The Raiders forced 19 YSU turnovers, which led to a 23-7 scoring advantage in points off miscues.

Chelsea Welch had 23 points, five assists and four steals for WSU and Emily Vogelpohl had 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Eleven Under-the-Radar Freshmen That Every Fan Should Know About--College Court Report
Jermaine Jackson Jr. – Detroit Mercy Titans

2017-18 Stats: 12.5 ppg, 3.2 rpg, 3.1 apg, 1.2 spg; 36.2% FG, 88.0% FT

The best young back court in the Horizon League belongs to the Detroit Mercy Titans, and freshman guard Jermaine Jackson Jr. will be a key piece of the puzzle moving forward. While Jackson Jr. has had some struggles in terms of shooting this season, he is still one of three Titans who are averaging double-digit points per game, posting 12.5 points per night out. He also leads the team with 3.1 assists per game, and is one of just three players to appear in all 21 games for Detroit Mercy. With his streaky shooting, Jackson Jr. can get hot and lead the Titans to victory, much like he did against Youngstown State (12-of-17 FG, 32 pts, 93-91 win). Or, he can go cold and struggle like he did last time out against Oakland (2-of-9 FG, six points, 92-86 loss). The talent is there, and as his career progresses, the jumper will become more consistent and so will the points.

With Jackson Jr., Corey Allen, Josh McFolley, and Kameron Chatman all together for at least one more season, the Titans are a team to watch in the Horizon League.

There’s an assault on Steph Curry’s three-point record, and not just from Trae Young.

All credit to Chris Schutte (@ChrisSchutte3) for this one. The NCAA-record 162 three pointers that Curry made during the 2007-2008 season are yet again under attack. Wofford’s Fletcher Magee — he of UNC-slaying fame — and Oakland’s Kendrick Nunn are both currently out-pacing what Curry did in his record season. Here’s the proof:
For what it’s worth, Young has hit 78 three’s through 18 games.
