In the Horizon League was a game that could rival Indiana-Iowa in terms of a dramatic finish. UIC led Green Bay 39-20 at the half, and early in the second half it didn’t look like Green Bay was going to make it a ballgame. Over five minutes in, they still led 47-31, but then the Phoenix scored 11 unanswered points, and still down 60-53 with 3:05 left, scored the next ten points and then held off UIC at the end for a 63-62 win that puts them a game up on the host Flames at 9-6.

Horizon League: Wright State holds a one game lead with two to play over Northern Kentucky, but both are tough roadies against Milwaukee and Green Bay. Northern Kentucky has an equally (literally) challenging slate ahead, with road games against Green Bay and Milwaukee on tap.

Conference Tournaments 2019: What’s New--Blogging The Bracket
Format Changes
...
The Horizon League once again tinkered with its bracket. That’s undoubtedly due to the recent struggles of top four seeds, who managed to go a combined 3-5 in the 10-team, split-quarterfinal doubleheader setup employed in 2017 and 2018. So in 2019, the ninth- and 10th-place teams are out, as was the case in 2015 and 2016. Plus, only the semifinals and final will take place at Detroit’s Little Caesars Arena. (It’s also the final year of Motor City Madness; the tournament heads to Indianapolis next season.) The top four seeds will instead host the quarterfinals on March 5th and 6th (according to the bracket). I’m guessing that the quarters will be split again, with the top two seeds playing on the 5th and the third and fourth playing on the 6th, but neither the schedule or bracket make this clear.

-Milwaukee out of the Horizon League will be eliminated today if they lose at UIC, or if IUPUI beats Green Bay. They are currently three games back with three games to go, so either scenario would eliminate them. Detroit is currently the 8th place team, but since they swept the season series against Milwaukee they own the tiebreaker.

Horizon League

The Horizon League race looks like it’s going to come down to a battle between the league’s last two NCAA Tournament representatives: Northern Kentucky and Wright State. Both teams sit at 10-5, and have split the head to head matchups. As travel partners, the two also have the same opponents down the stretch: home games against Youngstown State and Cleveland State, and road games against Milwaukee and Green Bay. Both teams have separated themselves as the teams to beat, and it’ll be fun to watch to see if either of them slip up down the stretch.

Further down the standings, there’s competition for the chance to host a quarterfinals game. The top eight teams will make the Horizon League tournament, and the top four get to host a first round game on their home court before the semifinals and finals move to Detroit. Right now, IUPUI is the last team in at 6-8, while Green Bay and UIC round out the top four at 8-6. Essentially, we could see a ton of movement in the last couple of weeks with almost every team still in contention for home court advantage, and even an outside shot at a top seed to an extent.

-CLEVELAND STATE AT WRIGHT STATE (Horizon League). As hard to believe as this is, we may have our first team totally eliminated from the Survival Board tonight. If Cleveland State loses, it will be mathematically impossible for them to finish 8th and qualify for the Horizon League Conference Tournament. Our team of experts here at Hoops HD, after much debate, have concluded that they are not likely to receive an at-large bid, which would make them the first team to disappear from the board. Wright State is actually in a tie for first place and are trying to keep pace with Northern Kentucky.
