Men's seed race in summary form

Just for fun I decided to try it the way the HL office put it out last year at least: simply enumerate all the possible outcomes of today's 4 games and show the seeding for each one. At the bottom I summarize. Big assist to Hack (whoever you are) for spotting my error from yesterday.

Men's seed race 2/28/2009 -- Corrected

Tonight I'll just update my analysis from yesterday (with correction prompted by Hack added on 2/28):

Scores from 2/27/2009:

UIC 62 Loyola 58

Seed Team Conf Status
---- ---------- ---- ------
#1 Butler 14-3 Clinched double-bye
#2 Green Bay 13-4 Clinched double-bye
#3 Cleveland State 12-5 Clinches 3 seed by
beating Butler
#4 Wright State 11-6 Can get 4 seed by
beating Green Bay or
if Milwaukee loses to
Detroit
#5 Milwaukee 10-7 Clinched at least 5
seed
#6 Youngstown State 7-10 Hosts UIC
#7 UIC 7-11
#8 Loyola 6-12 Clinchec 8 seed
#9 Valparaiso 4-13 Clinched 9 seed
#10 Detroit 2-15 Clinched 10 seed

Butler won, but so did Green Bay, so the two teams can still finish tied if Green Bay beats Wright State and Cleveland State beats Butler. Both teams would finish 14-4. They have already split with each other, so it would fall to 3rd place, which would be Cleveland State since Green Bay will have beaten Wright State. They both will have split with Cleveland State, so then it would fall to 4th place. If Milwaukee loses to Detroit on Saturday, Wright State finishes 4th. Both teams will have swept Wright State, so it would then fall to Milwaukee. In this case, Green Bay wins the tiebreaker because they swept Milwaukee while Butler only split with them. So Green Bay would get the 1 seed, Butler the 2 seed, and the quarter and semifinals would be held as the Resch Center.

Milwaukee can tie Wright State at 11-7 by beating Detroit on Saturday. In this case, Green Bay would be 4-0 against Milwaukee/Wright State while Butler would be 3-1. Hence, Green Bay would still win the tiebreaker.

To sum it up: Butler wins the 1 seed unless Butler loses and Green Bay wins on Saturday, in which case Butler gets the 2 seed and Green Bay gets the 1 seed.

If Green Bay loses and Cleveland State wins to tie them at 13-5, the two teams split with each other, they both will have split with Butler, and Wright state finishes all alone in 4th place at 12-6. The Raiders will have split with both teams, so it then falls to Milwaukee. Milwaukee split with Cleveland State while they were swept by Green Bay, so Green Bay wins the tiebreaker and the 2 seed.

Therefore, Green Bay has clinched the 2 seed with their win over Detroit tonight.

If Cleveland State loses to Butler and Wright State beats Green Bay on Saturday, both teams finish 12-6. They split with each other. Both will have been swept by Butler. Both have split with Green Bay and Milwaukee. So it falls to either Youngstown State at 8-10 or Youngstown State and UIC at 7-11.

If Youngstown State wins Saturday, Wright State wins the tiebreaker since they swept Youngstown State while Cleveland State split with them.

If Youngstown state loses Saturday, both teams are 3-1 against UIC and Youngstown State, so it would then fall to Loyola. Both teams swept Loyola, so it would then fall to Valparaiso. Both teams swept Valparaiso, so it would finally fall to Detroit (by losing last night to Green Bay, Detroit clinched the 9 seed for Valparaiso). Both teams swept Detroit, so it would then fall to RPI.

To sum up: Cleveland State can clinch at least the 3 seed by beating Butler on Saturday, or if Valparaiso beats Youngstown State and their RPI remains higher than Wright State's. As of 12:46 AM this morning, Cleveland State's RPI was 77 while Wright State's was 111, so that's a fairly safe bet. Otherwise, they fall to 4th and Wright State gets the 3 seed.

If Wright State loses to Green Bay and Milwaukee beats Detroit, both teams finish 11-7. They have now split with each other. However, Milwaukee wins the tiebreaker since both teams will have been swept by Green Bay while only Milwaukee has beaten Butler. So, if Milwaukee wins and Wright State loses, Milwaukee gets the 4 seed and Wright State the 5 seed. Otherwise, Wright State gets the 4 seed and Milwaukee gets the 5 seed.

With Loyola's loss to UIC, Youngstown State has now clinched the 6 seed.

Loyola has clinched the 8 seed.

Valparaiso clinched the 9 seed last night when Detroit lost to Green Bay. In so doing, of course, Detroit clinched the 10 seed.

Good Morning Hoops Nation: February 27--The Mid-Majority

U'useless Stat of the Day

With a Horizon League doubleheader on Saturday -- Cleveland State at Butler in the afternoon followed by Green Bay at Wright State in the evening -- we well close the 2008-09 regular season with 83 games attended. The 100 figure, which made us sorta famous once, has lost its luster over the years and has become more a been-there-done-that thing. But we'll reach it for the fourth time in five years at the Southland quarterfinals in Katy, Tex. two weeks from now (it'll be the third game of the four) -- and as a few aspirants have found out, it's not as easy as it looks.

There will be a special five-segment feature here on the site next week we call Mid-Majority D.I.Y., which will guide you through the steps of rolling your very own Mid-Majority website. It'll cover each of the five crucial elements in doing something like this -- scheduling, travel planning, packing, food, and of course, truck stops -- complete with all the lessons and mistakes of the past five years. It's going to be great fun.

In the meantime, here are the regular-season totals for each of the site's five seasons, and the eventual final tally.
Season Reg.S Total
Season 1 (2004-05) 70 100
Season 2 (2005-06) 54 93
Season 3 (2006-07) 87 116
Season 4 (2007-08) 83 117
Season 5 (2008-09) 83 ???

Mid-Majority Chat #5--The Mid-Majority

[Comment From Dan]
When you wrote about Loyola's upset of Butler, you described the Ramblers as "a year away," do you think they could actually be competitive next season? What can a program like Loyola do to consistently compete with Butler in the Horizon?
3:20
I'll stand by that. I think they have some good young guys in Gibler and Hicks, and some good role players who are juniors right now. Butler looks poised to run the league for the forseeable future, but there will be room below them in the dangerous-spoiler category that Green Bay and Milwaukee are in right now. This is a consistent two-bid league waiting to happen, as long as the noncon wins keep coming and the standings can maintain better order.

Men's Seed Race 2/27/2009

Scores from 2/26/2009:

Wright State 70 Milwaukee 62
Green Bay 78 Detroit 62
Butler 78 Youngstown State 57
Cleveland State 71 Valparaiso 64

Seed Team Conf Status
---- ---------- ---- ------
#1 Butler 14-3 Clinched double-bye
#2 Green Bay 13-4 Clinched double-bye
#3 Cleveland State 12-5 Clinches 3 seed by
beating Butler
#4 Wright State 11-6 Can get 4 seed by
beating Green Bay or
if Milwaukee loses to
Detroit
#5 Milwaukee 10-7 Clinched at least 5

#6 Youngstown State 7-10 Clinches 6 seed with
one more win or if
UIC beats Loyola
#7 UIC 6-11 -+ Winner of this
#8 Loyola 6-11 -+ game gets at
least 7 seed

In this case, both Butler and Green Bay would be 3-1 against Milwaukee and Wright State, so the tiebreaker would fall to 6th place, which will be Youngstown State at 8-10 if they beat Valparaiso on Saturday, or Youngstown State and either Loyola or UIC at 7-11.

If Youngstown State beats the Crusaders to finish 8-10, Butler wins the tiebreaker because they swept the Penguins while the Phoenix split with them.

If UIC beats Loyola tonight and Youngstown State loses on Saturday, Butler wins the tiebreaker because they are 4-0 against UIC and Youngstown State while Green Bay is 3-1.

If Loyola beats UIC tonight and Youngstown State loses on Saturday, Butler still wins the tiebreaker because they are 3-1 against Loyola and Youngstown State, but Green Bay is 2-2.

To sum it up: Butler wins the 1 seed unless all of the following happens on Saturday: Butler loses to Cleveland State and Green Bay beats Wright State and Milwaukee loses to Detroit. If all of that happens, Butler gets the 2 seed and Green Bay gets the 1 seed.

So once again, it falls to either Youngstown State at 8-10 or Youngstown State and either UIC or Loyola at 7-11.

If Youngstown State wins Saturday, Wright State wins the tiebreaker since they swept Youngstown State while Cleveland State split with them.

If UIC beats Loyola tonight and Youngstown state loses Saturday, both teams are 3-1 against UIC and Youngstown State, so it would then fall to Loyola. Both teams swept Loyola, so it would then fall to Valparaiso. Both teams swept Valparaiso, so it would finally fall to Detroit (by losing last night to Green Bay, Detroit clinched the 9 seed for Valparaiso). Both teams swept Detroit, so it would then -- I guess? -- fall to RPI.

If Loyola beats UIC tonight and Youngstown State loses Saturday, Wright State wins the tiebreaker because they are 4-0 against Loyola and Youngstown State while Cleveland State is 3-1.

To sum up: Cleveland State can clinch at least the 3 seed by beating Butler on Saturday, or if UIC beats Loyola and Valparaiso beats Youngstown State and their RPI remains higher than Wright State's.

Youngstown State can clinch the 6 seed by beating Valparaiso on Saturday. If they lose, they will tie with either Loyola or UIC. If UIC wins that game, Youngstown State wins the tiebreaker because they swept UIC. If Loyola wins that game, Loyola wins the tiebreaker because they split with Butler and Green Bay while Youngstown State split with Green Bay but was swept by Butler. So, if UIC beats Loyola tonight, Youngstown State has clinched the 6 seed. Otherwise, they have to beat Valparaiso on Saturday to secure the 6 seed.

If Loyola beats UIC and Valparaiso beats Youngstown State, then Youngstown State will end up with the 7 seed.

The loser of the UIC-Loyola game tonight clinches the 8 seed.

Valparaiso clinched the 9 seed last night when Detroit lost to Green Bay. In so doing, of course, Detroit clinched the 10 seed.

Women's seed race 2/27/2009

Scores from 2/26/2009:

Butler 74 Milwaukee 71 OT
Green Bay 68 Valparaiso 60
Loyola 70 Youngstown State 52
Cleveland State 83 UIC 73

Seed Team Conf 1st round matchup
---- ---------- ---- -----------------
#1 Green Bay 16-0 Will host winner of #8-#9 game
#2 Butler 12-3 Would host winner of #7-#10 game
#3 Cleveland State 11-4 Would host #6 Milwaukee
#4 Valparaiso 8-7 Would host #5 UIC
#5 UIC 7-8
#6 Wright State 7-8 Would host #10 Youngstown State
#7 Milwaukee 7-9
#8 Detroit 5-10 Would host #9 Loyola
#9 Loyola 3-12
#10 Youngstown State 0-15

With their win over Valparaiso, Green Bay clinched 1st place outright and will have the #1 seed. More importantly, the semifinals and finals will once again be at the Kress Center.

Butler still controls their own destiny. As long as they keep winning the rest of the way, Cleveland State can't catch them. If they do lose one and tie Cleveland State at 14-4, that one loss will have come at the hands of the Vikings who will have split with Butler, meaning the Bulldogs beat Green Bay and would win the tiebreaker since Cleveland State was swept by Green Bay.

If they lose two, Cleveland State can jump into 2nd place by winning out, including a win over Butler, who would then have the 3 seed. If Cleveland State loses once, they tie at 13-5. If that loss came to Butler, Butler will have swept the Vikings and will take the tiebreaker. If that loss comes against Loyola or Valparaiso, then it depends on who wins the Butler-Green Bay game on Saturday. If Butler wins that game, then as described above, they win the tiebreaker. If Butler loses that game, the tiebreaker falls to 4th place. Valparaiso breaks the tie in Cleveland State's favor if the Vikings beat the Crusaders next week. Wright State already breaks the tie in Butler's favor because they split with Cleveland State but were swept by Butler. Milwaukee already breaks the tie in Cleveland State's favor for the same reason. Detroit and UIC were both swept by both teams.

If Butler loses all 3 remaining games to finish 12-6, Cleveland State could do no worse than finish in a tie at 12-6. If that happened, again it means they beat Butler next week, Butler loses to Green Bay on Saturday, and the same possibilities above occur: either Valparaiso, Wright State, or Milwaukee will break the tie.

Cleveland State has clinched a tie for 3rd. Only Valparaiso can tie them, and only if they win out while the Vikings lose out, putting both teams at 11-7. Butler would of course have the 2 seed. Valparaiso will have split with Cleveland State. Both were swept by Green Bay. While Cleveland State will have been swept by Butler, Valparaiso split with them, so the Crusaders would win the tiebreaker and get the 3 seed, with the Vikings having the 4 seed.

Aside from that possibility, Valparaiso controls its own destiny in 4th place. All they have to do is keep winning. UIC and Wright State both lurk one game behind them, and Milwaukee is a game and a half behind. The Crusaders host the Panthers on Saturday, but are already finished with the Flames and the Raiders.

If Valparaiso finishes 10-8, either UIC or Wright State can tie them. They play each other so they both can't finish 10-8. Regardless of which one beats the other next week, both have split with Valparaiso. All 3 have been swept by Green Bay. Only Valparaiso has beaten Butler, so that tiebreaker would favor Valparaiso. On the other hand, if Cleveland State finishes 2nd and sweeps Valparaiso in the process, then Wright State can snatch the 4 seed by beating UIC and tying Valparaiso at 10-8. If UIC beats Wright State and ties Valparaiso at 10-8, and Cleveland State finishes 2nd and sweeps Valparaiso, then the tiebreaker would still fall to Butler and favor Valparaiso. So, if Valparaiso finishes 10-8, the only way they can fall from 4th place is if they lose to Cleveland State next week, Cleveland State finishes 2nd, and Wright State ties them at 10-8.

It starts to get really muddy for awhile after that. Since we still have 3 games to go, I'll save the muddy middle for Sunday.

But we can say that YSU has "clinched" the 10 seed because the best they can do now is tie Loyola, and Loyola has already swept them. Loyola could finish as high as 8th place if they can win out and Detroit loses to Loyola next week while beating only one of Wright State and UIC. The two teams would be tied at 6-12, and Loyola would win the tiebreaker because they will have split with Cleveland State while Detroit was swept by them. Or, if Detroit finishes 5-11, Loyola can get the 8 seed outright by finishing 6-12.

Good Morning Hoops Nation: February 25--The Mid-Majority

Conference Calls
...
Horizon League (begins Tue., Mar. 3): Two games remain in the HL, with slates on Thursday and Saturday. Butler is a game up at 13-3 and can clinch its second consecutive regular season championship (and the right to host the semifinals) with a home win against Youngstown State tomorrow. Green Bay, at 12-4, could possibly still win the No. 1 seed outright with two Butler losses and wins at Detroit and Wright State. If a tiebreaker at the top is necessary, it would be the record against the No. 3 seed, which looks like Cleveland State (11-5) at the moment. Green Bay split with the Vikings; Butler, which beat CSU earlier this year, ends the regular season on Saturday by hosting the return game. Either way, the top two seeds get two-round byes to the semifinals in Hoops Nation's strictest seed protection policy.

Women's seed race 2/22/2009

Scores from 2/21/2009:

Valparaiso 75 Butler 65
Wright State 68 Youngstown State 51
Cleveland State 60 Detroit 50
Milwaukee 70 UIC 49
Green Bay 88 Loyola 44

Seed Team Conf 1st round matchup
---- ---------- ---- -----------------
#1 Green Bay 15-0 Would host winner of #8-#9 game
#2 Butler 11-3 Would host winner of #7-#10 game
#3 Cleveland State 10-4 Would host #6 Milwaukee
#4 Valparaiso 8-6 Would host #5 UIC
#5 UIC 7-7
#6 Milwaukee 7-8
#7 Wright State 7-8 Would host #10 Youngstown State
#8 Detroit 5-10 Would host #9 Loyola
#9 Loyola 2-12
#10 Youngstown State 0-14

Green Bay has clinched a tie for first. If they lose to Butler, Valparaiso, and Milwaukee, and Butler also beats Milwaukee, Youngstown State and Cleveland State, they both would finish 15-3. They will have split with each other. Cleveland State would have at least 5 losses and Valparaiso would have at least 9 wins. Cleveland State would not break the tie since they would have been swept by both teams. Valparaiso would not break the tie since they would have split with both teams. UIC will not break the tie because they have been swept by both teams. Milwaukee would not break the tie because they would have split with both teams. Wright State will not break the tie because they have been swept by both teams. Detroit will not break the tie because they have been swept by both teams. Loyola will not break the tie because they have been swept by both teams. And Youngstown State would not break the tie because they would have been swept by both teams.

I'm trying to remember, but I think the final tiebreaker is RPI? If that is the case, there is no way to know until it happens.

Of course, all Green Bay needs to do is win one more game or Butler lose one game and they clinch the #1 seed and put us all out of our misery.

Butler can clinch the 2 seed by winning out. If they go 3-1 and Cleveland State wins out, they both finish 14-4. This means Butler's 1 loss comes to Cleveland State, while they defeat Milwaukee, Green Bay, and Youngstown State, while Cleveland State also defeats Valparaiso, UIC, and Loyola. Butler and Cleveland State will have split with each other. In this case, Butler wins the tiebreaker because they split with Green Bay while Cleveland State was swept by Green Bay.

Hence Butler can clinch the 2 seed with 3 more wins for a 14-4 record.

If Butler finishes 13-3, Cleveland State can grab the 2 seed by winning out (including a defeat of Butler). If Cleveland State goes 3-1 to tie them at 13-3, it depends first of all on what happens at the Wolstein Center between these two teams. If Butler wins that clash, they win the tiebreaker by sweeping Cleveland State. If they lose that contest, then it depends on what happens between Butler and Green Bay at Hinkle next week. If Butler wins that contest, Butler wins the tiebreaker for the same reason as above. If Butler loses to Green Bay, then the tiebreaker falls to the 4th place team. This would mean that Butler defeats Milwaukee and Youngstown State, and it would mean that Cleveland State loses to either Valparaiso, UIC, or Loyola. Of the teams who finish at least in a tie for 4th, Valparaiso can break the tie in favor of Cleveland State if the Vikings beat them in the final week of the season, UIC can break the tie in favor of Butler if they beat Cleveland State, Milwaukee already breaks the tie in favor of Cleveland State since they beat Butler and have already been swept by the Vikings, Wright State breaks the tie in favor of Butler because they've been swept by the Bulldogs and have split with the Vikings, and Detroit cannot break the tie because they were swept by both teams. Ties among these 5 teams will complicate the process further.

If Butler finishes 12-6, Cleveland State could grab the 2 seed by winning at least 3 of their remaining 4 games. If they split and finish in a 2-way tie with Butler at 12-6, again it first depends on which team wins their rematch in two weeks. A win by Butler again secures the 2 seed for the Bulldogs, while a win for Cleveland State again shifts our attention to Butler's clash with Green Bay. If Butler wins that one, they secure the 2 seed as explained above, while losing that game moves the tiebreaker to 4th place, with the options explained above.

A 3-way tie between these two teams and Valparaiso is also possible at 12-6. If Butler beats Cleveland State next week, they win the tiebreaker with a 3-1 record, Valparaiso 2-2, and Cleveland State 1-3 taking 2nd, 3rd, and 4th seeds respectively. If they lose to the Vikings next week, then all 3 teams will be 2-2 in head-to-head, and it depends on how Butler does against Green Bay this week. Either way, Cleveland State cannot get the 2 seed in this scenario. If Butler loses to the Nix this week, Valparaiso wins the tiebreaker as the only team of the 3 to beat Green Bay. Butler and Cleveland State would remain tied and the tiebreaker would fall to 5th place, which could be UIC, Milwaukee, Wright State, or Detroit. UIC could break the tie in favor of Butler if they beat the Vikings this week. Milwaukee already breaks such a tie in favor of Cleveland State (Vikings 2-0, Butler 0-1). Wright State already breaks such a tie in favor of Butler (Butler 2-0, Vikings 1-1). Detroit cannot break the tie since they were swept by both teams.

If instead Butler beats Green Bay this week, then Cleveland State would drop out as the 4th seed. Butler can win the remaining tiebreaker by beating the Vikings next week since that would result in a sweep whereas the Crusaders can only split, or if Valparaiso loses to Cleveland State next week. If Butler loses and Valparaiso wins against Cleveland State, the tiebreaker would fall to 5th place. UIC already breaks such a tie in favor of Butler (Butler 2-0, Valparaiso 1-1). Milwaukee would break that tie in favor of Valparaiso (Valparaiso 2-0, Butler 1-1 or 0-2). Wright State breaks it in favor of Butler (Butler 2-0, Valparaiso 1-1). Detroit also breaks it in favor of Butler (Butler 2-0, Valparaiso 1-1).

If Butler loses out to finish 11-7, both Cleveland State and Valparaiso have a chance to move ahead of them, and UIC can tie them at 11-7. Cleveland State can clinch the 2 seed with 3 wins, one of which would be against Butler. If they finish 12-6 and Valparaiso wins out, those two teams could tie for 2nd. They will have split their season series as one of the remaining 2 losses would come against the Crusaders. Since Valparaiso will have split with Green Bay while Cleveland State has already been swept by them, Valparaiso would win the tiebreaker and get the 2 seed. Needless to say, either the Crusaders or the Vikings could finish alone at 12-6 and also have the 2 seed.

A two-way tie between Butler and Cleveland State at 11-7 for 2nd place (implying the lone Viking win comes against Butler) means that Valparaiso and Detroit cannot break the tie, UIC will break the tie in favor of Butler, Milwaukee has already broken such a tie in favor of Cleveland State, and Wright State has already broken such a tie in favor of Butler.

A two-way tie between Butler and Valparaiso at 11-7 for 2nd place would be broken in favor of the Crusaders if they beat Green Bay since Butler will have been swept by the Phoenix (oops, sorry, "The Nix"). If instead they lose to Green Bay (and therefore beat Milwaukee, Cleveland State, and Youngstown State), Cleveland State cannot break the tie, UIC and Wright State both break the tie in favor of Butler because they were swept by the Bulldogs but split with the Crusaders, and Milwaukee breaks the tie in favor of Valparaiso because they beat Butler but will have been swept by Valparaiso.

In the case of a 3-way tie at 11-7 between Butler, Cleveland State, and Valparaiso, Butler would be 1-3, Cleveland State is 3-1 or 2-2, and Valparaiso is 1-3 or 2-2, depending on who wins between Cleveland State and Valparaiso. If the Vikings win, they get the 2 seed and the Crusaders and the Bulldogs fight it out for the 3 seed, with Valparaiso taking it because they would have beaten Green Bay. If the Crusaders beat Cleveland State, then Butler gets the 4 seed and Valparaiso and Cleveland State fight it out for the 2nd seed, and Valparaiso gets it if they beat Green Bay while Cleveland State gets it (by virtue of sweeping Butler) if Valparaiso loses to Green Bay.

I'll go further after tomorrow's schedule is completed:

Green Bay at Valparaiso
Milwaukee at Butler
Cleveland State at UIC
Youngstown State at Loyola

News On The Horizon 2/24/2009

Bracket Buster: Northeastern Shuts Down Wright State--Hoopville

Good Morning Hoops Nation: February 23--The Mid-Majority

BracketBusted: As a pall descended over Belk Arena at the final media timeout on Saturday on the way to a 12-point Butler road win, there came the sad realization in the stands that Davidson 2009 isn't exactly Davidson 2008. Stephen Curry's jello-wristed 6-for-23 shooting performance notwithstanding (the result of not practicing for a week, and his status as a game-time decision in the wake of his week-old ankle injury), the Wildcats were just plain manhandled by Butler. When the Bulldogs wanted better floor positioning on offense, they took it. When the white-clads stood in their way, the black and blue crew pushed them out. They didn't even ask nicely.

A lot's been made of how much the Wildcats miss playmaking point guard Jason Richards. And that's true, they do. But I'd have to say that the team probably misses Boris Meno and Thomas Sander more, two post players who steadfastly disallowed NCAA Tournament opponents to use them as doormats. A year from now, Frank Ben-Eze will have the control to match his power, and Ben Allison will better know what to do with his physical tools. For now, they're freshman bit players, full of promise, and Davidson has lost three straight home games.

BracketButler: No team got more out of the weekend showcase than the Bulldogs from Indianapolis. After a pair of drops to Loyola and Wisconsin-Milwaukee, there were questions as to whether the young team had hit the wall. After more than rising to the challenge on national TV in a hostile environment, it's logical to chalk up recent sloppy and uninspired play to focus issues -- it's easier to know what's on the line when the cameras are on. Butler has proved it will get up for big games, of which there are many coming. While we urge all strong mid-majors to win their conference tournaments and get in the old-fashioned way, the Bulldogs are the only BB participant that can feel any sort of safe... but that's just inviting more complacency issues and compounding an earlier problem.
