#HLMBB bottom 4 seeds: YSU, NKU, CSU, UIC

Now that we have complete separation and a little bit of a break in the action, I figured I'd fill out the scenarios for the bottom 4 seeds. As a teaser, there are 2 games tonight:
        W L Pct. GB
Valpo 14 2 0.875 0
OU 12 5 0.706 2.5
WSU 11 5 0.688 3
UWGB 10 6 0.625 4
UWM 9 7 0.563 5
UDM 9 8 0.529 5.5
YSU 5 10 0.333 8.5
NKU 5 11 0.313 9
CSU 3 12 0.200 10.5
UIC 3 13 0.188 11

Northern Kentucky @ Cleveland State
Wright State @ Youngstown State
Cleveland State's situation doesn't really solidify much tonight, but Northern Kentucky can guarantee no worse than the 8 seed with a win tonight.

Wright State can guarantee no worse than a 3 seed with a win tonight at Youngstown State (they can still fall to 4th by losing tonight and Saturday). Nothing gets resolved for the Penguins with tonight's game -- they are still either the 7 or the 8.

Now on to the nitty-gritty details:

UIC and CSU cannot get the 7 seed because the best they can do is finish 5-13 and NKU and YSU are 5-11 and play each other so one has to reach at least 6 wins. NKU gets the 7 seed if they beat YSU on Saturday (for the sweep). Even if they lose to CSU and YSU beats WSU on Thursday, they tie for 7th and win the tiebreaker. Neither CSU nor UIC can reach 6-12 so there's no one else to tie with them.

YSU gets the 7 seed if they beat NKU on Saturday. In this case, NKU and YSU split with each other, and we go to common opponents. Valpo swept both. Oakland split with both. Wright State swept NKU but split with YSU. Valpo, Wright State, and Oakland make up the top 3 (if YSU is 6-12 here it is because they beat NKU and lost to WSU, eliminating GB from the 3 seed), so it doesn't matter how WSU and OU stack up in the standings, WSU breaks the tie in favor of YSU.

In other words, the 7 seed will be decided on Saturday at Beeghely Center between the Norse and the Penguins. The winner of that game will get the 7 seed.

If NKU wins the game, YSU gets the 8 seed because even if CSU and/or UIC ties them (at 5-13, meaning YSU also loses to WSU), YSU wins the tiebreaker (CSU beating WSU gives the 2 seed to OU and OU breaks the YSU-CSU tie in favor of YSU, YSU wins a tiebreaker with UIC directly because they swept the Flames, and they win the 3-way tie by going 3-1 to CSU's 2-2 and UIC's 1-3).

Since CSU split with UIC, a 2-way tie between them is broken depending on higher seeds. That's going to be Wright State because Valpo and Oakland swept both teams and if Green Bay is the 3 seed they have to sweep both teams to get there. Wright State has already split with UIC and beaten Cleveland State once. So if they sweep Cleveland State, UIC gets the 9 seed. If they end up splitting with the Vikings, then Milwaukee or Green Bay gets the honor of breaking the tie (Detroit swept both teams).

If Milwaukee is the 4 seed (see previous post for details), they can break the tie by losing to UIC on Sunday, in which case UIC again gets the 9 seed. If Green Bay is the 4 seed, they can break the tie by losing to UIC on Friday leading to the same result. If UIC loses both games, then it falls to Friday's game between Northern Kentucky and Cleveland State. If Cleveland State wins, they sweep the Norse and earning the 9 seed (UIC split with NKU). If the Norse beat the Vikings (feels like there's a joke there somewhere), then it falls to Youngstown State who breaks the tie in favor of Cleveland State as well.

To summarize in the case where NKU is 7 and YSU is 8, the team with the higher win total gets the 9 seed, and if there's a tie, UIC gets the 9 seed if -- in top down order -- Wright State sweeps Cleveland State or UIC splits with Milwaukee or Green Bay. Cleveland State gets the 9 seed if neither of those things happens.

If YSU wins the game, the 8 seed is still wide open though NKU can clinch it by beating CSU on Thursday. If they lose to CSU, that opens the door to both CSU and UIC. For either
one to contend for it, they'd have to win out, of course. If they both win out, the 3-way tie with NKU is broken in favor of CSU because they are 3-1 (sweep NKU, split with UIC),
UIC is 2-2, and NKU is 1-3). In a 2-way tie with NKU, CSU also wins by virtue of their sweep. If CSU loses to WSU, NKU gets the 8 seed if Oakland beats Detroit or YSU beats WSU
because even if they lose to CSU and UIC wins out, NKU wins the tiebreaker because they split with 2 seed Oakland (if Detroit beats Oakland and WSU beats YSU, WSU is the 2 seed
and UIC wins the tiebreaker by virtue of their split with WSU). If UIC ties NKU at 5-13 and CSU loses to WSU, UIC wins the tiebreaker because WSU is the 2 seed as mentioned.

Assuming NKU gets the 8 seed, much of the above analysis for NKU-7/YSU-8 still applies. A 2-way tie between UIC and CSU is broken first by Wright State, then either Milwaukee or Green Bay followed by the other, then in this case YSU (the buck stops there before it gets to NKU).

#HLMBB top 6 tiebreakers: Valpo, Oakland, Wright State, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Detroit

Two more games in the can tonight:
Milwaukee 87 Youngstown State 51
Green Bay 78 Cleveland State 61

        W L Pct. GB
Valpo 14 2 0.875 0
OU 12 5 0.706 2.5
WSU 11 5 0.688 3
UWGB 10 6 0.625 4
UWM 9 7 0.563 5
UDM 9 8 0.529 5.5
YSU 5 10 0.333 8.5
NKU 5 11 0.313 9
CSU 3 12 0.200 10.5
UIC 3 13 0.188 11
First off, let me restate the following more cleanly (and possibly more correctly):
However, Wright State has to win out (if Oakland beats Detroit) or win at least 1 more (if Detroit beats Oakland) or Green Bay has to lose at least 1 more (if Wright State loses out) to guarantee the 3 seed. In the last case, Green Bay and Milwaukee are capable of also reaching 11-7, but Wright State will be the only HL team to sweep Valpo so they hold all the cards.
If Wright State wins out and Oakland beats Detroit, they get the 3 seed. If they split their final 2 games, they get the 3 seed. If they lose out and Green Bay loses at least 1 more game, Wright State gets the 3 seed. In a tie with Green Bay at 12-6, they win because of their sweep of Valpo. In a tie with Green Bay and/or Milwaukee, Wright State split with the former and swept the latter, and is the only one of the 3 to sweep Valpo, so the only way for Wright State to fall to the 4 seed is if Green Bay wins out.

Green Bay's 3 seed case is unchanged from yesterday, but they guaranteed themselves at least the 5 seed with their win tonight. They have to settle for the 5 seed if they lose out, Milwaukee splits their remaining 2 games, and Oakland beats Detroit. If they beat UIC and lose to Valpo and Milwaukee wins out and Wright State wins at least 1, they have to settle for the 5 seed (if Wright State loses out we have a 3-way tie for 3rd giving Green Bay the 4 seed). If they beat Valpo and lose to UIC, Milwaukee wins out, Oakland gets the 2 seed, and Wright State wins at least 1 more game, they have to settle for the 5 seed because Milwaukee wins the tiebreaker due to their split with Oakland (both would have split with Valpo).

Otherwise, Green Bay gets the 4 seed.

Milwaukee can no longer get the 3 seed because the best they can do is tie Wright State and/or Green Bay (tying Wright State only does Milwaukee no good) at 11-7. At best, Milwaukee gets the 4 in those scenarios if Green Bay loses out. If Green Bay splits their remaining 2 games, Milwaukee gets the 5.

In order to get the 4 seed, Milwaukee has to finish higher than Detroit and at least as high as Green Bay. If Milwaukee is 10-8, Detroit has to be 9-9 and Green Bay has to lose at least 1 of their 2 remaining games. They will either have 4th place all to themselves or tie with Green Bay. Since Oakland beats Detroit in this case and gets the 2 seed, either Milwaukee wins the tiebreaker because Green Bay is swept by Valpo or because Green Bay is swept by Oakland.

Milwaukee gets the 5 seed if they win out and either Green Bay wins out or Green Bay beats Valpo and Wright State either ties both teams at 11-7 or gets the 2 seed at 13-5 because Detroit beats Oakland. If Green Bay wins out, the best they can do is tie Wright State for 4th, and Wright State wins that tiebreaker. If Green Bay splits (beats Valpo, loses to UIC) and Wright State ties with them and Milwaukee for 3rd at 11-7, Wright State wins the tiebreaker with a 3-1 record and Green Bay finishes 2nd at 2-2, leaving Milwaukee with the 5 seed at 1-3. If Green Bay splits (beats Valpo, loses to UIC) and Wright State wins out to become the 2 seed, Green Bay wins tiebreaker because both split with Valpo and Green Bay splits with Wright State while Milwaukee is swept by them.

If Detroit beats Oakland, Milwaukee loses to Valpo, and Green Bay wins at least 1 of their remaining 2 games, Milwaukee falls to the 6 seed because even at 10-8, they lose the tiebreaker with Detroit (both swept by Valpo, they both are swept by Oakland, but Detroit splits with Wright State while Milwaukee is swept by them, and Green Bay is locked in as 4 seed -- it doesn't matter which one gets the 2 seed since Oakland doesn't break the tie). Detroit would get the 5 seed in this case.

In all other scenarios, Detroit gets the 6 seed. And obviously our top 6 are now locked in. The bottom 4 will be Youngstown State, Northern Kentucky, Cleveland State, and UIC>

#HLMBB Post Sunday update: 1 seed locked, 2 seed down to Oakland and Wright State

After Sunday's games one seed has solidified:

Valparaiso 90 Detroit 74
Oakland 74 UIC 63

        W L Pct. GB
Valpo 14 2 0.875 0
OU 12 5 0.706 2.5
WSU 11 5 0.688 3
UWGB 9 6 0.600 4.5
UDM 9 8 0.529 5.5
UWM 8 7 0.533 5.5
YSU 5 10 0.333 8.5
NKU 5 11 0.313 9
CSU 3 12 0.200 10.5
UIC 3 13 0.188 11
We now have the 1 seed locked down: Valpo (since everyone else has at least 5 losses). Meanwhile, Oakland's win eliminated Green Bay from the chase for the 2 seed. We are now down to Wright State and Oakland.

Oakland can get the 2 seed by beating Detroit on Friday or if Wright State loses at least 1 more game next weekend. Conversely, in order for Wright State to get the 2 seed, they have to win out (the easy part -- YSU and CSU, both at home) *and* Oakland has to lose to Detroit at home (the hard part). If Wright State gets the 2 seed, Oakland gets the 3 seed (they are guaranteed at least the 3 seed).

Wright State has to settle for the 4 seed if they lose out and Green Bay wins out.

That covers the 2 seed, Wright State, and Oakland.

Likewise Green Bay gets the 3 seed if they win out and Wright State loses out. If they win out and Wright State wins at least 1 more, they get the 4 seed.

If they lose out and Detroit beats Oakland, Green Bay has to settle for the 6 seed (if Oakland beats Detroit and/or Milwaukee finishes 9-9, Green Bay wins any tiebreaker -- getting the 4 seed if both finish 9-9 because they swept Detroit and split with Milwaukee, getting the 5 seed if Milwaukee wins 10 or more because they swept Detroit, or getting the 5 seed if they just tie Milwaukee because they split with Wright State).

That's not every last scenario for Green Bay, but it's close.

With today's loss to Valpo, Detroit has been eliminated from the 3 seed. Oakland's win at UIC also eliminated Milwaukee from the 3 seed. So the 3 seed is down to Wright State, Green Bay, and Oakland.

If Milwaukee wins out and Green Bay loses at least 1 more game, and Oakland is the 2 seed, Milwaukee gets the 4 seed. If they tie with Green Bay, they win the tiebreaker (if Green Bay gets one of its wins against Valpo, they win because of their split with Oakland; if Green Bay loses again to Valpo, they win because they split with Valpo).

If Detroit beats Oakland, Green Bay loses out, and Milwaukee beats Youngstown State and UIC and loses to Valpo or loses 2 or more regardless of who, Detroit gets the 4 seed because only Milwaukee can tie them at 10-8, and in this case only Wright State breaks the tie, in favor of Detroit because they split with them while Milwaukee was swept by them.

This covers the top 6 seeds, except for the case where Milwaukee loses out and Youngstown wins out. Both get swept by Valpo, both split with Oakland, and both split with Green Bay. The only top 4 team left is Wright State, and they break the tie in favor of Youngstown State because they split with them while sweeping Milwaukee.

Outside of this one situation, there is a clean separation between the top 6 (Valpo, Oakland, Wright State, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Detroit) and the bottom 4 (Youngstown State, Northern Kentucky, Cleveland State, and UIC).

#HLMBB top seed scenarios: Valpo, Oakland, Wright State, Green Bay, Milwaukee, Detroit

So far, no corrections submitted for yesterday's post .

With 3 more games in the books, leaving 13 remaining:
Green Bay 107 Youngstown State 90
Milwaukee 88 Cleveland State 54
Wright State 67 Northern Kentucky 64

Our standings are:

        W L Pct. GB
Valpo 13 2 0.867 0
OU 11 5 0.688 2.5
WSU 11 5 0.688 2.5
UWGB 9 6 0.600 4
UDM 9 7 0.563 4.5
UWM 8 7 0.533 5
YSU 5 10 0.333 8
NKU 5 11 0.313 8.5
CSU 3 12 0.200 10
UIC 3 12 0.200 10
Valpo's situation remains largely unchanged. They get the 1 seed with at least 1 more win in the final 3 games, or if they lose out but Wright State loses at least 1 more game. This accounts for 7936 out of the remaining 8192 scenarios.

They get the 2 seed if they lose out, Wright State wins out, and Oakland loses at least 1 more game because they lose the 1st place tiebreaker with Wright State. They also get the 2 seed if they lose out, Wright State wins out, Oakland wins out, Milwaukee wins out, and Green Bay and Detroit finish no higher than 10-8 because Wright State wins the 3-way tie for 1st due to Milwaukee, leaving Valpo to beat out Oakland for the 2 seed by virtue of sweeping them. This accounts for 196 of the remaining 8192 scenarios, meaning Valpo gets a double bye in 8132 out of the remaining 8192 scenarios.

In the remaining 60 scenarios, Valpo gets the 3 seed because they lose out, Wright State and Oakland win out, and Green Bay is ahead of or tied with Milwaukee and/or Detroit. In each case, Oakland wins the 1st place tiebreaker, and Wright State then wins the 2nd place tiebreaker by virtue of their sweep of Valpo.

Those 60 scenarios are Oakland's only hope for a 1 seed.

They get the 2 seed if they win out and Wright State loses at least 1 more game (losing the 1st place tiebreaker to Valpo and settling for the 2 seed or simply finishing 2nd to Valpo in the standings), if they split their remaining 2 games and Wright State loses at least 1 more game (winning the 2nd place tiebreaker over Wright State and Green Bay or simply finishing ahead of them), or if they and Wright State both lose out and Green Bay loses at least 1 more because they swept Wright State and Green Bay and split with Milwaukee and Detroit (no matter how many are tied with them at 11-7 -- 1, 2, 3, or 4 -- they always win the tiebreaker).

To expand on that last one: Obviously the two way tie with Wright State goes to Oakland. Add in Green Bay, who Oakland also swept, and nothing changes. Add in Milwaukee and they win with a 3-1 record (WSU 2-2, UWM 1-3). Add in Detroit and they win with a 3-1 record (UDM 2-2, WSU 1-3). Add in Green Bay and Milwaukee and they win with a 5-1 record (WSU 3-3, UWM 2-4, GB 2-4). Add in Green Bay and Detroit and they win with a 5-1 record (WSU 2-4, GB 3-3, UDM 2-4). Add in Milwaukee and Detroit and they win with a 4-2 record (WSU 3-3, UWM 2-4, UDM 3-3). Finally, add all 3 in and they win with a 6-2 record (WSU 4-4, GB 4-4, UWM 3-5, UDM 3-5).

All of that accounts for 5504 out of the remaining 8192 scenarios, which means Oakland gets a double bye in 5564 of the remaining scenarios.

They get the 3 seed if they, Wright State, and Milwaukee win out, Valpo loses out, and everybody else wins 10 or less as mentioned above, if they split their remaining games and Wright State wins out (Green Bay is no threat because of the tiebreaker), or if they lose out and either Green Bay loses at least one or Wright State loses out (they win all the tiebreakers as mentioned above). Thes accounts for 2156 of the remaining 8192 scenarios.

4 (320 scenarios), 5 (144 scenarios), and 6 (8 scenarios) seeds are also possible for Oakland. All of them start with Oakland losing out, so if they win at least 1 more game, they clinch at least the 3 seed.

Wright State gets the 1 seed if they win out, Valpo loses out, and Oakland loses at least 1 more game (192 scenarios), or if they and Oakland both win out, Valpo loses out, and Milwaukee finishes alone in 4th place as mentioned before (4 scenarios). Those are the only two ways they get the 1 seed (total of 196 out of the remaining 8192 scenarios).

Wright State gets the 2 seed if Valpo wins at least 1 more game, and Oakland finishes with at least 1 less win than they do (2368 scenarios), or if they tie with Oakland and Valpo at 13-5 (they and Oakland win out and Valpo loses out) and Green Bay ties or exceeds Milwaukee (60 scenarios) because Oakland and Wright State are both 3-1 against GB/UWM while Valpo would be 2-2, then Oakland eliminates Wright State from the 1 seed OR because Oakland is 2-0 against GB while Wright State and Valpo would be 1-1, then Wright State eliminates Valpo from the 2 seed (total of 2428 scenarios, meaning Wright State gets a double bye in 2624 out of the remaining 8192 scenarios).

Wright State gets the 5 seed (the lowest they can go) if they and Oakland lose out and Green Bay and Detroit win out (28 scenarios) because they lose the 3-way tiebreaker with Oakland and Detroit (WSU 1-3, Detroit 2-2, Oakland 3-1). If Oakland wins at least 1 game, Wright State would win the tiebreaker with Detroit because of their sweep of Valpo.

Wright State gets the 4 seed in 424 scenarios which begin with them losing out but avoid the above 5 seed scenarios.

In the remaining 5540 scenarios, they get the 3 seed (some of which include them still losing out).

Green Bay still has an outside shot at the 2 seed thanks to their win over Youngstown State yesterday. Their path is simple: if they win out and both Wright State and Oakland lose out, they get the 2 seed because they would be the only team besides Valpo to reach 12 wins (64 scenarios).

They can fall as low as the 6 seed.

Milwaukee has an outside shot at the 3 seed. If they win out, both Valpo and Wright State win at least 1 more game, Oakland loses out, and Detroit and Green Bay each finish no higher than 10-8, they get the 3 seed (48 scenarios) because they win the tiebreaker with Oakland by splitting with Valpo.

They can fall as low as the 7 seed (haven't broken it down yet, but they lose a bunch of tiebreakers to Youngstown State!)

Detroit has a shot at the 3 seed. If they win out, Oakland loses out, and Green Bay finishes no higher than 10-8, they get the 3 seed (340 scenarios) because they win the tiebreaker with Oakland by splitting with Valpo, they finish 2nd in a 3-way tie for 2nd with Oakland and Wright State (OU 3-1, UDM 2-2, WSU 1-3), and they win 3rd place tiebreaker with Oakland and Milwaukee (there is no other tie that hasn't already been resolved in favor of Wright State or Oakland) because they and Milwaukee eliminate Oakland by splitting with Valpo and they then eliminate Milwaukee by splitting with Wright State.

They can fall as low as the 6 seed.

Analysis of lower seed intricacies will start to fill in more after today's or tomorrow's games.

News On The Horizon 2/20/2016

The Morning Dish – Saturday, February 20, 2016--Hoopville
The second one was in the Horizon League as Valparaiso hosted Oakland. The first meeting went to the Crusaders, and for a while it looked like the second one was definitely going that way as the Crusaders led by eight at the half. But Greg Kampe’s teams don’t go away quietly, and this one is no different. Kay Felder (26 points) rallied his team back, but it was Alec Peters (16 points, 14 rebounds) and Valparaiso that made enough plays late to hold off the Golden Grizzlies 86-84. With the win, Valparaiso clinches a share of the Horizon League regular season title.

#HLMBB Updated top team scenarios -- Valpo, Oakland, Wright State, Green Bay, Milwaukee

Once again I start out with a correction, this time from @PhearThePhoenix regarding my statement in #HLMBB double-bye possibilities: VU, WSU, UWM, UWGB, OU:
... In fact, Green Bay's lone chance at a double-bye consists of winning out while Wright State and Oakland both lose out, so that Green Bay is alone in 2nd at 12-6 ...

In this case it was a simple misspeak. Obviously if Wright State only loses 2 of their remaining 3, they will be 11-7 and that will also fit the condition above. It remains the case that Green Bay has to be alone at 12-6 in order for this to happen, but Wright State doesn't have to lose all their remaining games.

After last night's games:
Valparaiso 86 Oakland 84
Detroit 83 UIC 72

The standings are now:
 W L Pct. GB
Valpo 13 2 0.867 0
OU 11 5 0.688 2.5
WSU 10 5 0.667 3
UWGB 8 6 0.571 4.5
UDM 9 7 0.563 4.5
UWM 7 7 0.500 5.5
YSU 5 9 0.357 7.5
NKU 5 10 0.333 8
CSU 3 11 0.214 9.5
UIC 3 12 0.200 10
All Valpo needs to do is win one more game in their final 3 to lock up the 1 seed since no one else can reach 14 wins. If they lose out, they can still get the 1 seed if Wright State loses at least one more game because they now own the tiebreaker with Oakland. This accounts for 64512 of the remaining 65536 scenarios.

If Valpo loses out, Wright State wins out, and Oakland loses at least once more, Valpo gets the 2 seed by losing the tiebreaker with Wright State. If Oakland instead wins out, Valpo still gets the 2 seed as long as Milwaukee is the lone 4th place team because Wright State wins the 3-way tiebreaker by virtue of their sweep of Milwaukee, but that leaves a two-way tie between Valpo and Oakland (both of whom would split with Milwaukee), and Valpo wins that tiebreaker to get the 2 seed. All of this accounts for 796 scenarios. Thus Valpo gets a double-bye in 65308 of the remaining 65536 scenarios, leaving only those scenarios where all 3 teams are tied at 13-5 and Green Bay is tied with Milwaukee or better because these lead to Oakland getting the 1 seed, leaving Valpo tied with Wright State, who wins that tiebreaker. These are the remaining 228 scenarios.

In fact, those 228 scenarios are precisely the only ones which give Oakland the 1 seed. They need Wright State to also finish 13-5 to effectively cancel out Valpo's tiebreaker over them.

If Valpo gets the 1 seed, Oakland can get the 2 seed by winning out if Valpo wins at least one more game because they own the tiebreaker over Wright State (as effectively shown above, if Valpo instead loses out, Oakland either gets the 1 seed or the 3 seed). They can also get the 2 seed if they don't win out as long as they finish tied or better with Green Bay and Wright State (Milwaukee's max is 11-7) because their only relevant loss is one game to Milwaukee (who lost to both Wright State and Green Bay in addition to their loss to Oakland). All of this accounts for 52360 of the remaining 65536 scenarios, meaning they get a double-bye in 52588 of those scenarios.

Oakland gets the 4 seed if they lose out and both Wright State and Green Bay win at least 12, for obvious reasons. If they lose out and only one of those 2 teams wins 12 or more, they still end up with the 4 seed if Milwaukee wins out because they would lose the tiebreaker because Milwaukee would split with Valpo. This accounts for 872 scenarios.

That leaves 12076 scenarios in which Oakland gets the 3 seed.

Wright State gets the 1 seed if -- as mentioned above -- they tie with Oakland and Valpo at 13-5 and Milwaukee finishes alone in 4th since they win the tiebreaker as the only team that sweeps Milwaukee, or if they just tie with Valpo at 13-5 because they swept Valpo. This accounts for 796 of the remaining 65536 scenarios.

Wright State gets the 2 seed if -- as mentioned above -- they win out and Valpo wins at least one more and Oakland loses at least one more, they win out and time with Valpo and Oakland at 13-5 with Green Bay tied with or ahead of Milwaukee, which gives Oakland the 1 seed and Wright State the 2 seed. They also get the 2 seed outright if they win out, Valpo wins at least one more and Oakland loses at least one more. Finally, they get the 2 seed if they win 2 and lose 1 and Oakland loses out. Any tie with Green Bay would be favor them because they swept Valpo. All of this accounts for 11478 of the remaining 65536 scenarios, so that Wright State gets a double-bye in 12274 of those scenarios.

Otherwise, they can get as low as the 5 seed if they lose out, Milwaukee wins out, and Green Bay wins at least 3 putting them and Oakland at least at 11-7. This accounts for 180 scenarios. Otherwise they end up with either the 3 (48544 scenarios) or the 4 (4288 scenarios).

Green Bay was already eliminated from the 1 seed before last night (now they can't share the regular season title). They get the 2 seed (and thus their only chance at a double bye if they win out, Oakland loses out, and Wright State loses at least 2 of their 3 remaining games. Basically, they have to be alone in 2nd place at 12-6 in order for this to happen (512 of the remaining 65536 scenarios).

They can get as low as the 7 seed, and since their game with Youngstown State is going on as I type this, I'm going to stop here. I'll put out another post tomorrow with updates after today's games. Basically, if they lose to YSU today, they are eliminated from the double bye.

Milwaukee has an even smaller chance at the 2 seed and a double bye. If they win out, Oakland and Wright State both lose out, and Green Bay loses at least one more game, they will either tie with Oakland (and win by virtue of beating Valpo), and tie with Green Bay, Oakland, and Detroit at 11-7. In this 4-way tie, Green Bay is 3-3 (sweeping Detroit, swept by Oakland, split with Milwaukee), Milwaukee is 4-2 (sweeps Detroit and splits with Oakland), Detroit is 1-5 (swept by Green Bay and Milwaukee, split with Oakland), and Oakland is 4-2 (sweeps Green Bay, splits with Milwaukee and Detroit). Green Bay would drop out as the 4, Detroit as the 5, and Milwaukee would win the remaining tiebreaker with Oakland because they would split with Valpo. This accounts for 120 of the remaining 65536 scenarios.

Finally, the most unlikely outstanding game of the night saw Youngstown State’s Penguins nip Illinois-Chicago 92-91 in double overtime as Matt Donlan scored the winning points with a tip-in with 1.2 seconds left in the second overtime. YSU won despite UIC freshman Dikembe Dixson racking up 40 points and 17 rebounds in a massive performance.

Tonight’s Menu:

Oakland and Valparaiso square off for the second time this year in the Horizon, this one at the Valpo ARC (8 p.m., ESPNU). The Crusaders stifled Kahlil Felder in the first meeting, winning by 17, and can just about wrap up the regular season title with a win.

Valpo is 22-5 and could have a case for an at-large bid which means Oakland could get the Horizon League up to two bids this year. Greg Kampe's squad is 19-9 and has plenty of firepower with Kay Felder, Jalen Hayes, Max Hooper, and Percy Gibson.

Valpo worked the Grizz in their first game of the year but the two play again on Friday in Indiana. Oakland will also have a little bit of an advantage in the Horizon League Tournament playing close to home. If your team is on the bubble, then you better be rooting for Valpo.

Horizon (4): Valparaiso, Oakland, Wright State, Green Bay. (Chance of first-place tie = 7%) Not surprisingly, the computer really likes Valpo to win the title. But Oakland is two games back and plays there tomorrow. With an upset the Grizzlies would have a decent shot at a shared title.
