Women's seed race 3/7/2008

Scores from 3/6/2008

UIC 93 CSU 80
Milwaukee 59 Detroit 50
Loyola 86 YSU 70
Green Bay 78 Wright St. 73 OT

Seed Team Conf 1st round matchup
---- ---------- ---- -----------------
#1 Green Bay 16-1 Will host winner of 8/9 game
#2 Wright St. 11-6 Will host winner of 7/10 game
#3 Milwaukee 10-7 Would host Butler
Will definitely host 6 seed
#4 Valparaiso 9-8 Would host CSU
A win plus either a Milwaukee
win or a CSU loss clinches the
4 seed
#5 CSU 9-8
#6 Butler 9-8
#7 YSU 7-10 Will host Detroit in play-in game
#8 UIC 6-11 Will host Loyola in play-in game
#9 Loyola (IL) 5-12
#10 Detroit 3-14

Detroit now has the 10 seed.

Milwaukee has clinched the 3 seed. Valpo, Butler, and CSU are still fighting it out for the 4, 5, and 6 seeds. All combinations are still in play.

UIC has clinched the 8 seed because even if Loyola ties them at 6-12, UIC split with #2 Wright State while Loyola was swept by them. Loyola therefore has the 9 seed.

And thus, the play-in games are set: Detroit at YSU and Loyola at UIC.

What follows is partially based on my interpretation of the tie breaker rules, specifically:

(d) If two tied teams met twice during the regular season and one of
the two won both games, the winner shall be awarded the higher
position.
(e) If two tied teams met once during the regular season or split in two
games during the regular season, compare each tied team’s record
against the team occupying the highest position in the standings
and continue down through the standings until one team gains the
advantage, thereby winning the higher position.
(f) If three or more teams are tied, compare the combined record of
each of the tied teams against the other teams involved in the tie
until an advantage is gained (example: Team A’s combined record
against both Team B and Team C as compared to Team B’s combined
record against A and C, etc.).
(g) If the provisions of (f) above fail to resolve a tie involving three or
more teams, compare each of the tied teams’ records against the
team occupying the highest position in the standings and continue
down through the standings until the tie is reduced to a two-team
tie (at which time refer to items (d) and (e) above) or until the tie is
broken.

1. Wright State splits in Wisconsin and gets the 2 seed

a. 3rd place is 11-7 -- This can only be Milwaukee.

This means Milwaukee wins out and CSU splits or
loses out. Milwaukee gets the 3 seed.

1. CSU splits to tie with either Butler or
Valpo at 10-8

a. Valpo beats Butler

CSU split with Valpo, but Valpo split with
#1 Green Bay while CSU was swept by them,
so Valpo gets the 4 seed, CSU the 5 seed,
Butler the 6 seed.

b. Butler beats Valpo

CSU split with Butler, they both were swept
by #1 Green Bay, but CSU split with #2 Wright
State while Butler was swept by them, so CSU
gets the 4 seed, Butler the 5 seed, Valpo the
6 seed.

2. CSU loses out to finish 9-9

a. Valpo beats Butler to get the 4 seed

CSU ties with Butler at 9-9. As shown above,
#2 Wright State resolves this tiebreaker in
favor of CSU to give them the 5 seed, Butler
the 6 seed.

b. Butler beats Valpo to get the 4 seed

As shown above, #1 Green Bay resolves the
tiebreaker in favor of Valpo to give them the
5 seed, CSU the 6 seed.

b. 3rd place is 10-8 -- This must be either Butler or
Valpo and Milwaukee, and can also be CSU

1. CSU, Milwaukee, and Valpo finish 10-8

Milwaukee is 3-1, CSU 2-2, and Valpo 1-3 in the
round-robin head-to-head, giving Milwaukee the
3 seed.

At this point, rule (f) above could be worded
more forcefully, but it does seem to imply that
in the above scenario, the tie can be completely
broken under rule (f), namely, CSU gets the 4
seed, Valpo the 5 seed. If rule (f) left all
3 teams tied or 2 of them tied, then rule (g)
does explicitly say you break off only one team
at a time, then do a "reset". But in this case,
rule (f) probably takes care of everything.

Butler gets the 6 seed.

2. CSU, Milwaukee, and Butler finish 10-8

These 3 teams each split with the other 2. All 3
were swept by #1 Green Bay. Butler was swept by
#2 Wright State, CSU split with them.

Milwaukee loses to Wright State in this scenario.
That means Milwaukee also is swept by Wright State,
so CSU gains the 3 seed.

Milwaukee split with Butler. They both were swept
by #1 Green bay. They both will have been swept
by #2 Wright State. They both split with #3 CSU.
Butler will have split with Valpo while Milwaukee
swept Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 4 seed, Butler
the 5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

3. Milwaukee and Valpo finish 10-8

CSU loses to both Loyola and UIC to tie Butler
at 9-9.

Milwaukee swept Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 3
seed, Valpo the 4 seed.

CSU split with Butler. They both were swept
by #1 Green Bay. Butler was swept by #2 Wright
State, but CSU split with them, so CSU gets the
5 seed, Butler the 6 seed.

4. Milwaukee and Butler finish 10-8

CSU loses to both Loyola and UIC to tie Valpo at
9-9.

Milwaukee split with Butler and they both were
swept by #1 Green Bay. In this case, both
Milwaukee and Butler were swept by #2 Wright
State. Dropping down to 5th place...

Milwaukee is 3-1, Butler would be 2-2, against
CSU/Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 3 seed, Butler
the 4 seed.

Valpo split with CSU, but they split with #1
Green Bay while CSU was swept by them, so Valpo
gets the 5 seed, CSU the 6 seed.

2. Wright State wins out and gets the 2 seed (by beating
both Green Bay and Milwaukee)

(This might turn out to be virtually the same case...)

3rd place is 10-8 -- This must be either Butler or Valpo,
and Milwaukee, and can also be CSU

1. CSU, Milwaukee, and Valpo finish 10-8

Milwaukee is 3-1, CSU 2-2, and Valpo 1-3 in the round-
robin head-to-head, giving Milwaukee the 3 seed. Once
again, the same tiebreaker gives CSU the 4 seed, and
Valpo the 5 seed.

Butler clinches the 6 seed.

2. CSU, Milwaukee, and Butler finish 10-8

These 3 teams each split with the other 2. All 3 were
swept by #1 Green Bay. Butler and Milwaukee will have
been swept by #2 Wright State, while CSU split with
them, so CSU gets the 3 seed.

Milwaukee split with Butler. They both were swept by
#1 Green bay. They both will have been swept by #2
Wright State. Butler split with Valpo while Milwaukee
swept Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 4 seed, Butler the
5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

3. Milwaukee and Valpo finish 10-8

CSU loses to both Loyola and UIC to tie Butler at 9-9.

Milwaukee swept Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 3 seed,
Valpo the 4 seed.

CSU split with Butler. They both were swept by #1
Green Bay. Butler was swept by #2 Wright State, but
CSU split with them, so CSU gets the 5 seed, Butler
the 6 seed.

4. Milwaukee and Butler finish 10-8

CSU loses to both Loyola and UIC to tie Valpo at 9-9.

Milwaukee split with Butler and they both were swept
by #1 Green Bay.

In this case, both Milwaukee and Butler were swept
by #2 Wright State. Dropping down to 5th place...

5th place is a 2-way tie between CSU and Valpo.
Milwaukee is 3-1, Butler would be 2-2, so Milwaukee
gets the 3 seed, Butler the 4 seed.

As shown above, the 2-way tie gives Valpo the 5
seed, CSU the 6 seed.

3. Wright State loses out to finish 11-7

Milwaukee can tie by beating Detroit.

a. Milwaukee finishes 11-7 (by beating Detroit), CSU 10-8

Milwaukee split with Wright State. They both were
swept by #1 Green Bay. Dropping down to 4th place...

1. Valpo beats Butler

Both are 3-1 against Valpo/CSU. Dropping to 6th
place...

Milwaukee split with Butler while Wright State
swept them, so Wright State gets the 2 seed,
Milwaukee the 3 seed.

CSU gets the 4 seed because they split with Wright
State while Valpo was swept by them. Valpo gets
the 5 seed, Butler the 6 seed.

2. Butler beats Valpo

Wright State is 3-1, Milwaukee 2-2 against Butler/CSU,
so Wright State gets the 2 seed, Milwaukee the 3 seed.

CSU gets the 4 seed because they split with Wright
State while Butler was swept by them. Butler gets the
5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

b. Milwaukee finishes 11-7 (by beating Detroit), CSU 9-9

Milwaukee split with Wright State. They both were swept
by #1 Green Bay. Dropping down to 4th place...

1. Valpo beats Butler

Both swept Valpo. Dropping to 6th place...

Milwaukee was 2-2 against CSU/Butler while Wright
State was 3-1, so Wright State gets the 2 seed,
Milwaukee the 3 seed.

Valpo gets the 4 seed.

CSU gets the 5 seed because they split with Wright
State while Butler was swept by them. Butler gets
the 6 seed.

2. Butler beats Valpo

Wright State swept Butler while Milwaukee split with
them, so Wright State gets the 2 seed, Milwaukee the
3 seed.

Butler gets the 4 seed.

CSU gets the 5 seed because they split with Wright
State while Valpo was swept by them. Valpo the 6
seed.

c. Milwaukee and CSU finish 10-8

Wright State gets the #2 seed (In all scenarios it now
appears).

1. Valpo beats Butler

Milwaukee is 3-1, CSU 2-2, Valpo 1-3 in the round-
robin head-to-head, so Milwaukee gets the 3 seed,
CSU the 4 seed, Valpo the 5 seed, Butler the 6
seed.

2. Butler beats Valpo

Milwaukee is 2-2, CSU 2-2, Butler 2-2 in the round-
robin head-to-head. They all were swept by #1
Green Bay. CSU and Milwaukee split with Wright
State while Butler was swept by them, so Butler
drops out with the 5 seed.

Milwaukee swept Valpo while CSU split with Valpo, so
Milwaukee gets the 3 seed, CSU the 4 seed.

valpo gets the 6 seed.

e. Milwaukee finishes 10-8, CSU 9-9

Wright State gets the #2 seed.

1. Valpo beats Butler

Milwaukee swept Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 3 seed,
Valpo the 4 seed.

CSU split with #2 Wright State while Butler was
swept by them, so CSU gets the 5 seed, Butler the 6
seed.

2. Butler beats Valpo

Milwaukee split with Butler. They were both swept by
#1 Green Bay. Milwaukee split with Wright State
while Butler was swept by them, so Milwaukee gets the
3 seed, Butler the 4 seed.

CSU split with #2 Wright State while Valpo was swept
by them, so CSU gets the 5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.
