Women's seed race 3/6/2008

Seed Team Conf 1st round matchup
---- ---------- ---- -----------------
#1 Green Bay 15-1 Will host winner of 8/9 game
#2 Wright St. 11-5 Will host winner of 7/10 game
#3 CSU 9-7 Would host Butler
#4 Milwaukee 9-7 Would host Valpo
#5 Valparaiso 9-8
#6 Butler 9-8
#7 YSU 7-9 Would host Detroit in play-in game
Will definitely host the 10 seed.
#8 UIC 5-11 Would host Loyola in play-in game
#9 Loyola (IL) 4-12
#10 Detroit 3-13

Green Bay clinched #1 seed.

Butler and Valpo have one game left -- against each other, and in Indianapolis. Butler has a chance to earn a split in the season series, while Valpo has a chance to sweep.

Everyone else has 2 games left: CSU and YSU travel to Chicago, Wright State and Detroit travel to Wisconsin.

When all the tiebreakers sort out below, it turns out that Wright State has clinched the #2 seed.

Either Butler of Valpo has a chance at the #3 seed by winning and if both CSU and Milwaukee lose out, or if they both split.

YSU, it turns out (as can be seen below) has clinched the #7 seed.

Detroit can perhaps move up to #9 or even #8 (though this takes a 3-way tie with YSU and Loyola, because they've already been swept by 5-11 YSU).

1. Wright State splits in Wisconsin and gets the 2 seed

YSU get at least the 7 seed because even if they tie with
UIC at 7-11, the two teams split, both were swept by #1
Green Bay, but YSU swept #2 Wright State, while UIC split
with them.

They can't get any higher than the 7 seed because even if
they tie Valpo at 9-9, Valpo's win over #1 Green Bay breaks
that tie, and even if they tie Butler at 9-9, Butler swept
YSU, and even if they tie with Milwaukee, CSU, and Valpo or
Milwaukee, CSU, and Butler or Milwaukee and Valpo or
Milwaukee and Butler or CSU and Valpo or CSU and Butler,
they have only 1 win in each of those combinations (against
Valpo; they were swept by the other 3), so they always lose
the tiebreaker.

Therefore, YSU is the 7 seed.

a. 3rd place is 11-7 -- This can be CSU, Milwaukee,
or both.

1. CSU and Milwaukee both win out

This means UIC finishes either 6-12 or 5-13,
and Loyola finishes either 5-13 or 4-14. It
also means that Wright State beats Green Bay.

CSU and Milwaukee split. They were both swept
by #1 Green Bay. Both split with #2 Wright
State. Since we are breaking the tie for #3,
we drop down to 5th place, which is either
Butler or Valpo at 10-8.

a. Butler beats Valpo

Both CSU and Milwaukee split with Butler.

1. YSU wins out to tie Valpo at 9-9

Both teams are 3-1 against YSU/Valpo,
so we drop down to 8th place UIC at
5-13.

CSU will have swept UIC while
Milwaukee was swept by UIC, so CSU
gets the 3 seed, Milwaukee the 4
seed. Butler gets the 5 seed, Valpo
the 6 seed.

2. YSU goes 8-10 or 7-11

CSU split with Valpo while Milwaukee
swept Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 3
seed, CSU the 4 seed. Butler gets the
5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

b. Valpo beats Butler

CSU split with Valpo while Milwaukee
swept Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 3 seed,
CSU the 4 seed. Valpo gets the 5 seed,
Butler the 6 seed since they swept YSU.

Even if Loyola ties with UIC at 5-13 by
beating YSU, UIC wins the tiebreaker: they
split with each other, they were both swept by
#1 Green Bay, but UIC split with #2 Wright
State, while Loyola was swept by them, so UIC
gets the 8 seed.

If Detroit ties Loyola at 4-14, they will win
the tiebreaker because the two teams split and
Detroit will have 1 more win than Loyola
against #1 Green Bay, so Detroit would get the
9 seed and Loyola the 10 seed. Otherwise,
Loyola gets the 9 seed and Detroit the 10 seed.

2. CSU wins out and Milwaukee splits or loses
out. CSU gets the 3 seed.

a. Milwaukee splits to tie with either Butler
or Valpo at 10-8

1. Valpo beats Butler

Milwaukee swept Valpo, so Milwaukee
gets the 4 seed, Valpo the 5 seed,
Butler the 6 seed.

2. Butler beats Valpo

Milwaukee split with Butler, they both
were swept by #1 Green Bay, they both
split with #2 Wright State, they both
split with #3 CSU. Since this is a
tie for 4th place, we then drop down
to 6th place.

a. YSU wins out to tie Valpo at 9-9

Milwaukee is 4-0 against Valpo/YSU,
while Butler would be 3-1, so
Milwaukee gets the 4 seed, Butler
the 5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

b. YSU goes 8-10 or 7-11

Milwaukee swept Valpo while
Butler will have split with them,
so Milwaukee gets the 4 seed,
Butler the 5 seed, Valpo the 6
seed.

If Detroit wins out, Loyola splits, and
UIC loses out, all 3 end up 5-13. Each
of these teams split with both of the
other two. However, Detroit will be the
only one of the three to beat Green Bay,
so Detroit would get the 8 seed. UIC
would still win the remaining tie with
Loyola by virtue of Wright State as
shown above.

If Detroit loses, ...

UIC gets the 8 seed because even if
Loyola ties with them, UIC wins the
tiebreaker as shown above.

Again, Loyola gets the 9 seed unless they
lose to YSU and Detroit beats Green Bay.
Detroit gets whichever seed Loyola doesn't
get.

b. Milwaukee loses out to finish 9-9

1. Valpo beats Butler to get the 4 seed

Milwaukee ties with Butler at 9-9. As
shown above, the tiebreaker is not
resolved before we reach 4th place. In
this case Valpo breaks the tie in favor
of Milwaukee since they swept Valpo
while Butler lost to Valpo, so
Milwaukee gets the 5 seed, Butler the
6 seed.

In a 3-way tie between Milwaukee, YSU,
and Butler, YSU was swept by both teams,
so they drop out and the above tiebreaker
still holds, giving Milwaukee the 5 seed,
Butler the 6 seed.

2. Butler beats Valpo to get the 4 seed

Milwaukee swept Valpo so they get the 5
seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

In a 3-way tie between YSU, Milwaukee,
and Valpo, Milwaukee swept both teams
and Valpo split with YSU. So again,
Milwaukee gets the 5 seed, and Valpo
the 6 seed.

If Detroit wins out, Loyola splits, and
UIC loses out, all 3 end up 5-13. Each
of these teams split with both of the
other two. However, Detroit will be the
only one of the three to beat Green Bay,
so Detroit would get the 8 seed. UIC
would still win the remaining tie with
Loyola by virtue of Wright State as
shown above.

If Detroit loses, ...

UIC gets the 8 seed because even if
Loyola ties with them, UIC wins the
tiebreaker as shown above.

Again, Loyola gets the 9 seed unless they
lose to YSU and Detroit beats Green Bay.
Detroit gets whichever seed Loyola doesn't
get.

3. Milwaukee wins out and CSU splits or loses out.
Milwaukee gets the 3 seed.

a. CSU splits to tie with either Butler or
Valpo at 10-8

1. Valpo beats Butler

CSU split with Valpo, but Valpo split
with #1 Green Bay while CSU was swept
by them, so Valpo gets the 4 seed, CSU
the 5 seed, Butler the 6 seed.

a. YSU wins out to tie Valpo at 9-9

Milwaukee is 4-0 against Valpo/YSU,
while Butler would be 3-1, so
Milwaukee gets the 4 seed, Butler
the 5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

b. YSU goes 8-10 or 7-11

Milwaukee swept Valpo while
Butler will have split with them,
so Milwaukee gets the 4 seed,
Butler the 5 seed, Valpo the 6
seed.

2. Butler beats Valpo

CSU split with Butler, they both were
swept by #1 Green Bay, but CSU split
with #2 Wright State while Butler was
swept by them, so CSU gets the 4 seed,
Butler the 5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

UIC gets the 8 seed because even if
Loyola ties with them (at 6-12 or 5-13),
UIC wins the tiebreaker as shown above.

Again, Loyola gets the 9 seed unless they
lose out and Detroit beats Green Bay.
Detroit gets whichever seed Loyola doesn't
get.

b. CSU loses out to finish 9-9

1. Valpo beats Butler to get the 4 seed

CSU ties with Butler at 9-9. As
shown above, #2 Wright State resolves
this tiebreaker in favor of CSU to give
them the 5 seed, Butler the 6 seed.

In a 3-way tie between CSU, Butler, and
YSU, YSU was swept by both CSU and
Butler, so they drop out and the above
tiebreaker still holds.

2. Butler beats Valpo to get the 4 seed

As shown above, #1 Green Bay resolves
the tiebreaker in favor of Valpo to
give them the 5 seed, CSU the 6 seed.

In a 3-way tie between CSU, Valpo, and
YSU, CSU is 3-1, Valpo 2-2, YSU 1-3,
so in this case, CSU would get the 5
seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

UIC gets the 8 seed because even if
Loyola ties with them (at 6-12 or 5-13),
UIC wins the tiebreaker as shown above.

Again, Loyola gets the 9 seed unless they
lose out and Detroit beats Green Bay.
Detroit gets whichever seed Loyola doesn't
get.

b. 3rd place is 10-8 -- This must be either Butler or
Valpo, and can also be CSU and/or Milwaukee

1. CSU, Milwaukee, and Valpo finish 10-8

Milwaukee is 3-1, CSU 2-2, and Valpo 1-3 in the
round-robin head-to-head, giving Milwaukee the
3 seed, CSU the 4 seed, and Valpo the 5 seed.

Butler clinches the 6 seed because they swept
YSU.

If Detroit wins out, Loyola splits, and UIC
loses out, all 3 end up 5-13. Each of these
teams split with both of the other two. However,
Detroit will be the only one of the three to beat
Green Bay, so Detroit would get the 8 seed. UIC
would still win the remaining tie with Loyola by
virtue of Wright State as shown above.

If Detroit loses, ...

UIC gets the 8 seed because even if Loyola ties
with them, UIC wins the tiebreaker as shown above.

Again, Loyola gets the 9 seed unless they lose out
and Detroit beats Green Bay. Detroit gets
whichever seed Loyola doesn't get.

2. CSU, Milwaukee, and Butler finish 10-8

These 3 teams each split with the other 2. All 3
were swept by #1 Green Bay. Butler was swept by
#2 Wright State, CSU split with them.

a. Milwaukee beats Wright State and loses to
Detroit

Milwaukee also splits with Wright State, so
Butler drops out and gets the 5 seed.

Milwaukee split with CSU, they were both
swept by #1 Green Bay, they both will have
split with #2 Wright State, they both split
with #5 Butler.

1. YSU wins out to tie Valpo at 9-9

Both teams are 3-1 against YSU/Valpo,
so we drop down to 8th place UIC at
6-12 or 8th place UIC and Loyola at
5-13.

a. 8th place is 6-12

CSU will have swept UIC while
Milwaukee was swept by UIC, so CSU
gets the 3 seed, Milwaukee the 4
seed.

b. 8th place is 5-13

Both will be 2-2 against UIC/Loyola.
Both will have split with #10 Detroit.
Whichever team has the higher RPI will
therefore get the 3 seed, the other
the 4 seed.

Valpo gets the 6 seed.

2. YSU goes 8-10 or 7-11

CSU split with Valpo while Milwaukee
swept Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 3
seed, CSU the 4 seed. Butler gets the
5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

b. Milwaukee loses to Wright State and beats
Detroit

Milwaukee also is swept by Wright State, so
CSU gains the 3 seed.

Milwaukee split with Butler. They both were
swept by #1 Green bay. They both will have
been swept by #2 Wright State.

1. YSU wins out to tie Valpo at 9-9

Milwaukee swept both teams while Butler
lost once to Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the
4 seed, Butler the 5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

2. YSU goes 8-10 or 7-11

Butler will have split with Valpo while
Milwaukee swept Valpo, so Milwaukee gets
the 4 seed, Butler the 5 seed, Valpo the 6
seed.

3. CSU and Valpo finish 10-8

Milwaukee loses to both Wright State and Detroit
to tie Butler at 9-9. YSU can also finish 9-9 by
winning out.

CSU split with Valpo, but Valpo split with #1
Green Bay while CSU was swept by them, so Valpo
gets the 3 seed, CSU the 4 seed.

Milwaukee split with Butler. They both were
swept by #1 Green Bay. They will both have been
swept by #2 Wright State. Milwaukee swept #3
Valpo while Butler will have been swept by them,
so Milwaukee gets the 5 seed, Butler the 6 seed.

(In a 3-way tie with YSU, they both swept YSU, so
it would still come down to the above 2-way tie)

Loyola can clinch the 8 seed by winning out if
UIC loses out (means YSU finishes 8-10).
Otherwise UIC clinches the 8 seed as shown above.

Detroit can clinch the 9 seed by winning out if
Loyola loses out. Detroit can also clinch the
8 seed by winning out if Loyola splits and UIC
loses out, as shown above. Otherwise, Loyola
gets the 9 seed and Detroit the 10 seed.

4. Milwaukee and Valpo finish 10-8

CSU loses to both Loyola and UIC to tie Butler
at 9-9. YSU can also finish 9-9 by
winning out.

Milwaukee swept Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 3
seed, Valpo the 4 seed.

CSU split with Butler. They both were swept
by #1 Green Bay. Butler was swept by #2 Wright
State, but CSU split with them, so CSU gets the
5 seed, Butler the 6 seed.

(In a 3-way tie with YSU, they both swept YSU, so
it would still come down to the above 2-way tie)

Loyola can only tie UIC, and UIC wins that tie-
breaker as shown, so UIC gets the 8 seed.

And if Detroit ties Loyola, Detroit gets the 9
seed by beating #1 Green Bay. Otherwise, Loyola
gets the 9 seed, Detroit the 10 seed.

5. CSU and Butler finish 10-8

Milwaukee loses to both Wright State and Detroit
to tie Valpo at 9-9. YSU can also finish 9-9 by
winning out.

CSU wins the tiebreaker with Butler as shown
above and gets the 3 seed, Butler the 4 seed.

Milwaukee swept Valpo, so they get the 5 seed,
Valpo the 6 seed.

6. Milwaukee and Butler finish 10-8

CSU loses to both Loyola and UIC to tie Valpo at
9-9. YSU can also finish 9-9 by winning out.

Milwaukee split with Butler and they both were
swept by #1 Green Bay.

a. Milwaukee beats Wright State and loses to
Detroit.

Milwaukee wins the tiebreaker because
Butler was swept by #2 Wright State, so
Milwaukee gets the 3 seed, Butler the 4
seed.

In a 2-way tie with Valpo, Valpo gets the
5 seed over CSU because of their win
over #1 Green Bay, with CSU getting the 6
seed.

In a 3-way tie with Valpo and YSU, CSU is
3-1, Valpo 2-2, and YSU 1-3, so CSU gets
the 5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed, and YSU the
7 seed (so in this one case, YSU still
has an impact).

b. Milwaukee beats Detroit and loses to Wright
State.

In this case, both Milwaukee and Butler were
swept by #2 Wright State. Dropping down to
5th place...

If 5th place is a 2-way tie between CSU and
Valpo, Milwaukee is 3-1, Butler would be 2-2,
so Milwaukee gets the 3 seed, Butler the 4
seed.

If 5th place is a 3-way tie between CSU,
Valpo, and YSU, Milwaukee is 5-1, Butler is
4-2, so again Milwaukee gets the 3 seed,
Butler the 4 seed.

As shown above, the 2-way tie gives Valpo
the 5 seed, CSU the 6 seed, while the 3-way
tie gives CSU the 5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

UIC with at least one victory clinches the 8
seed as shown before.

Detroit can get the 9 seed by tying Loyola at
4-14 as shown before. Otherwise Loyola gets the
9 seed, Detroit the 10 seed.

7. Valpo finishes alone at 10-8 to get the 3 seed

This means Milwaukee loses to both Wright State
and Detroit, and CSU loses to both Loyola and
UIC. It also means that CSU, Milwaukee, and
Butler all tie at 9-9. YSU can also finish
9-9 by winning out, but since YSU was swept by
all 3, the 4-way tie would immediately turn into
the 3-way tie.

In the 3-way tie, all 3 teams split with each of
the other 2, they each were swept by #1 Green
Bay, but CSU split with #2 Wright State while
the other 2 will have been swept by them, so CSU
gets the 4 seed.

Milwaukee gets the 5 seed because they swept #3
Valpo while Butler will have been swept by them.
Butler gets the 6 seed.

UIC with at least one victory clinches the 8
seed as shown before.

Detroit can get the 9 seed by tying Loyola at
4-14 as shown before. Otherwise Loyola gets the
9 seed, Detroit the 10 seed.

8. Butler finishes alone at 10-8 to get the 3 seed

This means Milwaukee loses to both Wright State
and Detroit, and CSU loses to both Loyola and
UIC. It also means that CSU, Milwaukee, and
Valpo all tie at 9-9. YSU can also finish 9-9
by winning out.

In the 3-way tie, Milwaukee is 3-1, CSU 2-2,
Valpo 1-3, so Milwaukee gets the 4 seed.

At this point the rules say we start over with
just CSU and Valpo, which makes a big difference!
They split with each other, but Valpo split with
#1 Green Bay while CSU was swept by them, so
Valpo gets the 5 seed and CSU the 6 seed.

In the 4-way tie, Milwaukee is 5-1, CSU 4-2,
Valpo 2-4, and YSU 1-5, so Milwaukee again gets
the 4 seed.

Again, we start over with a 3-way tie: CSU is 3-1,
Valpo 2-2, YSU 1-3, so CSU gets the 5 seed. As
has been shown previously, Valpo wins the
tiebreaker with YSU to get the 6 seed. Here again
YSU makes an impact.

UIC with at least one victory clinches the 8
seed as shown before.

Detroit can get the 9 seed by tying Loyola at
4-14 as shown before. Otherwise Loyola gets the
9 seed, Detroit the 10 seed.

2. Wright State wins out and gets the 2 seed (by beating
both Green Bay and Milwaukee)

(This might turn out to be virtually the same case...)

By the same reasoning, YSU gets the 7 seed (nothing has
really changed).

a. 3rd place is 11-7 -- This can only be CSU, who gets the
3 seed.

1. Milwaukee splits to tie with either Butler or Valpo
at 10-8 (by beating Detroit)

a. Valpo beats Butler

Milwaukee swept Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 4
seed, Valpo the 5 seed, Butler the 6 seed.

b. Butler beats Valpo

Milwaukee split with Butler, they both were swept
by #1 Green Bay, they both split with #2 Wright
State, they both split with #3 CSU. Since this
is a tie for 4th place, we then drop down to 6th
place.

1. YSU wins out to tie Valpo at 9-9

Milwaukee is 4-0 against Valpo/YSU, while
Butler would be 3-1, so Milwaukee gets the 4
seed, Butler the 5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

2. YSU goes 8-10 or 7-11

Milwaukee swept Valpo while Butler will have
split with them, so Milwaukee gets the 4 seed,
Butler the 5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

UIC gets the 8 seed because even if Loyola ties with
them, UIC wins the tiebreaker as shown above.

Again, Loyola gets the 9 seed unless they lose to YSU
and Detroit beats Green Bay. Detroit gets whichever
seed Loyola doesn't get.

2. Milwaukee loses out to finish 9-9 (by also losing to
Detroit)

a. Valpo beats Butler to get the 4 seed

Milwaukee ties with Butler at 9-9. As shown above,
the tiebreaker is not resolved before we reach 4th
place. In this case Valpo breaks the tie in favor
of Milwaukee since they swept Valpo while Butler
lost to Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 5 seed, Butler
the 6 seed.

In a 3-way tie between Milwaukee, YSU, and Butler,
YSU was swept by both teams, so they drop out and
the above tiebreaker still holds, giving Milwaukee
the 5 seed, Butler the 6 seed.

b. Butler beats Valpo to get the 4 seed

Milwaukee swept Valpo so they get the 5 seed,
Valpo the 6 seed.

In a 3-way tie between YSU, Milwaukee, and Valpo,
Milwaukee swept both teams and Valpo split with YSU.
So again, Milwaukee gets the 5 seed, and Valpo
the 6 seed.

If Detroit wins out, Loyola splits, and UIC loses out,
all 3 end up 5-13. Each of these teams split with both
of the other two. However, Detroit will be the only
one of the three to beat Green Bay, so Detroit would get
the 8 seed. UIC would still win the remaining tie with
Loyola by virtue of Wright State as shown above.

If Detroit loses, ...

UIC gets the 8 seed because even if Loyola ties with
them, UIC wins the tiebreaker as shown earlier.

Again, Loyola gets the 9 seed unless they lose to YSU
and Detroit beats Green Bay. Detroit gets whichever
seed Loyola doesn't get.

b. 3rd place is 10-8 -- This must be either Butler or
Valpo, and can also be CSU and/or Milwaukee (by beating
Detroit)

1. CSU, Milwaukee, and Valpo finish 10-8

Milwaukee is 3-1, CSU 2-2, and Valpo 1-3 in the
round-robin head-to-head, giving Milwaukee the
3 seed, CSU the 4 seed, and Valpo the 5 seed.

Butler clinches the 6 seed because they swept
YSU.

Butler and Milwaukee
will have been swept by #2 Wright State, while CSU
split with them, so CSU gets the 3 seed.

Milwaukee split with Butler. They both were swept
by #1 Green bay. They both will have been swept by
#2 Wright State.

a. YSU wins out to tie Valpo at 9-9

Milwaukee swept both teams while Butler lost
once to Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 4 seed,
Butler the 5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

b. YSU goes 8-10 or 7-11

Butler split with Valpo while Milwaukee swept
Valpo, so Milwaukee gets the 4 seed, Butler
the 5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

UIC gets the 8 seed because even if Loyola ties
with them, UIC wins the tiebreaker as shown above.

Again, Loyola gets the 9 seed unless they lose out
and Detroit beats Green Bay. Detroit gets
whichever seed Loyola doesn't get.

6. Milwaukee and Butler finish 10-8

CSU loses to both Loyola and UIC to tie Valpo at
9-9. YSU can also finish 9-9 by winning out.

Milwaukee split with Butler and they both were
swept by #1 Green Bay.

In this case, both Milwaukee and Butler were
swept by #2 Wright State. Dropping down to 5th
place...

If 5th place is a 2-way tie between CSU and Valpo,
Milwaukee is 3-1, Butler would be 2-2, so
Milwaukee gets the 3 seed, Butler the 4 seed.

If 5th place is a 3-way tie between CSU, Valpo,
and YSU, Milwaukee is 5-1, Butler is 4-2, so again
Milwaukee gets the 3 seed, Butler the 4 seed.

As shown above, the 2-way tie gives Valpo the 5
seed, CSU the 6 seed, while the 3-way tie gives
CSU the 5 seed, Valpo the 6 seed.

UIC with at least one victory clinches the 8
seed as shown before.

Detroit can get the 9 seed by tying Loyola at

This means Milwaukee loses to both Wright State
and Detroit, and CSU loses to both Loyola and
UIC. It also means that CSU, Milwaukee, and
Butler all tie at 9-9. YSU can also finish
9-9 by winning out, but since YSU was swept by
all 3, the 4-way tie would immediately turn into
the 3-way tie.

In the 3-way tie, all 3 teams split with each of
the other 2, they each were swept by #1 Green
Bay, but CSU split with #2 Wright State while
the other 2 will have been swept by them, so CSU
gets the 4 seed.

just CSU and Valpo, which makes a big difference!
They split with each other, but Valpo split with
#1 Green Bay while CSU was swept by them, so
Valpo gets the 5 seed and CSU the 6 seed.

In the 4-way tie, Milwaukee is 5-1, CSU 4-2,
Valpo 2-4, and YSU 1-5, so Milwaukee again gets
the 4 seed.

tiebreaker with YSU to get the 6 seed. Here again
YSU makes an impact.
