Freshman of the Week

Freshman guard Tevonn Walker played a large role in Valparaiso’s two key victories last week, averaging 15.5 points on 55 percent shooting. He scored 19 points in a win against Detroit and then 12 pints against Oakland, tacking on a pair of steals in that one as well.

The Horizon League has several talented freshman, and Walker is making a case for Freshman of the Year.

Honorable mentions: Ben Richardson, Loyola; David Skara, Valparaiso; Joshua Meier, Chicago State

Team of the Week

Valparaiso knocked off Detroit and Oakland last week to move into a tie with Cleveland State for first place in the Horizon League at 9-2. The Crusaders already have a home win against the Vikings, and they meet them again in Cleveland for the final game of the regular season Feb. 27.

Valpo has now won four games in a row and 9 of their last 10. The Crusaders have another huge game coming up Friday when they host the Green Bay Phoenix, who are 8-2 in Horizon League play.

In terms of sheer win total, Valpo is one of the best teams in the country. The Crusaders are 22-4, which puts them tied Northern Iowa for the third-most wins the country. Gonzaga leads with 24 wins while Kentucky has 23 victories.

Game of the Week

The highly anticipated rematch of Valparaiso and Oakland lived up to its billing. Valpo opened up an early double-digit lead, but Oakland closed it to 41-35 at halftime. The entire second half was played in 10-point window, and the game was tied going into the final five minutes.

A late surge by the Crusaders and a few ill-advised shots and turnovers by the Golden Grizzlies allowed Valpo to win 82-76.
