News On The Horizon 1/3/2013

Horizon League Up For Grabs. I was all ready to hand Valparaiso the early edge in the Horizon League title chase after the Crusaders’ win at Murray State and UIC’s simultaneous three-game skid. But after Valpo dropped the ball at home against Loyola Chicago Wednesday night, and UIC held serve against Youngstown State, there’s nothing suggesting the Crusaders’ gutsy road win will carry into league play. And so we’re back right where we started: the Horizon league is a barren landscape of middling mid-majors. This is a one-bid conference, and that’s all there is to it. Valpo may have a few bright spots, UIC is vastly improved over last season, and Detroit looks good in spots, but the abrupt departure of Butler this offseason left the Horizon without a dominant team and no one is stepping up to fill that power gulf.

5. Butler (Horizon to the Atlantic 10). The Butler Bulldogs' bolt was a biggie. It changed the Atlantic 10 for the better, sure, but now the Horizon is on the scramble for a program to replace it, and no one school can, at least not in the immediate future.

The Flames won eight in a row (a streak that included wins over Northwestern, Mercer and Colorado State) but followed that run with three consecutive road losses. But Howard Moore's program opened up conference play Wednesday with a 65-60 win over Youngstown State, another Horizon League contender. I don't think there are any guarantees with so much parity at the top with Detroit, Valparaiso, YSU and Loyola, which is coming off back-to-back road wins against DePaul and Valpo. But I like Illinois-Chicago as the one of America's surprise mid-major league champions.
