Valpo Coasting Through Horizon. With UIC’s early hot start all but flamed out, Detroit and Wright State stood as Valpo’s chief competition in the Horizon league. The Crusaders toppled both over a three-day span. Butler may be gone, but Valpo is doing its best to keep the league’s reputation in good stead.

UIC Embarrassed. The early success of UIC started to die out weeks ago. On Saturday, the Flames’ reached a new nadir. Facing Detroit in a big Horizon matchup, UIC lost by 51 points. This was a nice story early in the Fall, but it’s looking more and more like the Flames are little improved from last season’s eight-win squad.

Ray McCallum, Detroit – It’s going to take a few Valpo upsets, and errorless play the rest of the way, for Detroit to make a run at the Crusaders in the Horizon. McCallum might be the league’s best player. Here’s to hoping we get more performances of this ilk – 25 points, seven assists, five rebounds.

On the Horizon: Cleveland State (10-10, 2-4) has only won once (at Ball State) away from the Wolstein Center. If CSU aims to play in a postseason tournament it needs some road wins to counter the three small-college (Alabama-Huntsville, Notre Dame College, Rio Grande) wins that don't count when tournament selections are made.

Injury-riddled CSU can expect to get 6-9 Aaron Scales (concussion) back soon, perhaps for Wednesday's home game vs. Loyola. With Valparaiso (15-5, 5-1), Wright State (13-5, 4-1) and Detroit (12-7, 4-2) the clear league favorites, CSU has the spoiler role. The Vikings have already defeated Detroit in the Wolstein Center and have home games against Valpo (Feb. 9) and Wright State (Feb. 20).

Valparaiso: The Crusaders have moved into sole possession of first place in the Horizon League thanks to a pair of impressive performances this week. On Thursday, Valpo came back from down 22 points in the second half to beat Detroit on the road and followed that up with a 69-63 win over Wright State, who was previously undefeated in league play.
