The unfortunate reality of college basketball hit Robert Morris hard. After a season that saw the Colonials win the Horizon League tournament and punch a ticket to March Madness — as well as give No. 2-seeded Alabama a scare in the first round — nearly the entire roster sought different opportunities in the transfer portal. Horizon League Player of the Year Alvaro Folgueiras went to Iowa, and coach Andrew Toole will hope to recapture some of last season’s magic with a new team.

Storyline to watch: A few years ago, Robert Morris could’ve ran things back and entered this season as surefire favorites to repeat as Horizon League champions. But with the financial incentives offered at power-conference schools, that’s not the case. In addition to losing Folgueiras, the Colonials lost Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year Amarion Dickerson to USC.
They had four players averaging double-digit scoring on last year’s team, and all of them transferred away. Still, this is no novel concept for Toole. Robert Morris was still picked fourth in the Horizon League preseason poll, and IU Indy transfer DeSean Goode cracked the Preseason All-Horizon League second team.
As tends to be the question in these situations, will Toole be able to extract the most out of this revamped roster? North Carolina A&T transfer Chitikoudis may not have quite the floor-spacing ability of Folgueiras, but he offers a similar profile defensively with his length and shot-blocking. Sophomore 6-foot-11 forward Josh Hill was the team’s highest profile addition. As a high school senior, he ranked as a 4-star recruit and the No. 3 overall player in Georgia. He didn’t carve out a major role for Arkansas State as a freshman — he averaged only 6.7 minutes per game — but still should offer Robert Morris a potential go-to scoring option.
The Colonials seem to have solid depth in the frontcourt, but it remains to be seen how productive the new collection of guards can become. Toole — the reigning Horizon League Coach of the Year — and Robert Morris open the season in a non-conference clash against Folgueiras and Iowa.
