News On The Horizon 3/7/2019

Side Dishes:

Conference tournament play continued Wednesday night in the Horizon League, Northeast Conference and Ohio Valley Conference. The final two semifinalists were decided in the Horizon with both 2 seed Northern Kentucky and No. 3 Oakland moving on, but both not without a fight. NKU rallied from a halftime deficit to outrun Detroit Mercy 99-88, with the Titans’ Antoine Davis in a losing effort scoring 30 points in the final game of his explosive freshman year. Oakland also edged No. 6 Youngstown State 88-84, with all five starters in double figures led by Jaevin Cumberland with 23. Solid improvement this year by the Penguins, but it’ll be the Norse and Golden Grizzlies meeting in the semifinals.

Horizon League Quarterfinals:

No. 1 Wright State 71, No. 8 IUPUI 56

The Horizon League Tournament can get real wacky, but Wright State did its job and held serve against IUPUI behind 18 points from Bill Wampler off the bench. The Raiders never trailed and even led by 31 late before the Jaguars closed on a 23-7 run to make things respectable. Jaylen Minnett scored 17 for IUPUI as the only Jaguar in double figures.

No. 4 Green Bay 82, No. 5 UIC 77

One might say that the Phoenix rose from the ashes of the Flames. A late 9-0 run from Green Bay stole the UIC upset bid and a three-point play from Sandy Cohen III put the Phoenix ahead for good with 2:49 left. With the win, Green Bay swept the season series against UIC 3-0, with all three wins coming by five points or fewer. Green Bay will face top-seed Wright State in the semifinals — a team it beat by three less than a week ago.

The people are clamoring for more Penguins!

I’m going to commit the cardinal sin of blogging and admit I have no clue what I’m talking about in the first round of the Horizon League Tournament. All I know is the Penguins made a run to the conference semifinals in 2017 before falling to fellow NMTC member Northern Kentucky. Let’s make the magic happen again, Penguins.
