Northern Kentucky kept their game with Texas Tech close for a half; they trailed by 4 points going into halftime. The Norse got as close as 3 points following 3 free throws from Drew Sharpe at the beginning of the half, but the Red Raiders went on a 19-7 run to take control of the game and eventually won 72-57.

John Brannen, Northern Kentucky

The connection to Alabama is more natural, given that Brannen spent six seasons on Anthony Grant’s staff, and took over as interim coach for the 2015 NIT when Grant was let go. Since then, he’s taken a nascent Division I program in NKU and turned it into a Horizon League power. The Norse have made two out of the last three NCAA Tournaments, while going 40-14 in league play over that time. And Crimson Tide fans worried about returning to the Grant’s plodding style of play, have no fear: Brannen’s teams have generally played much faster than those of his former mentor.

March Madness 2019: The 10 biggest upsets ever in the opening weekend of the tournament--CBS Sports
10. No. 14 Cleveland State defeats No. 3 Indiana (83-79)

March 14, 1986

Sometimes, the remakes just can't top the original. Cleveland State and Arkansas-Little Rock both took down their Goliaths in the 1986 tournament -- marking the first time any 14 seeds had advanced and the first of just three times two No. 14 seeds would move on. The reason Cleveland State beating Indiana gets the nod over Arkansas-Little Rock is because of the context around this team.

John Feinstein's "A Season on the Brink" gave an inside look at Bobby Knight's 1985-86 Hoosiers. Clinton Ransey led Cleveland State with 27 points in the upset and Cleveland State would eventually make it to the Sweet 16 where they lost by one point to Navy. The team was an early Cinderella and it took down an Indiana team that had very high hopes.

1:30 p.m.: No. 3 TEXAS TECH vs. No. 14 NORTHERN KENTUCKY, TNT

LINE: Texas Tech (-14)
TOTAL: 136.5
IMPLIED SCORE: Texas Tech 75.25, Northern Kentucky 61.25
KENPOM: Texas Tech 74, Northern Kentucky 61

On the surface, I love Texas Tech here simply because I think that the Red Raiders are closer to being one of the five or six best teams in college basketball than a No. 3 seed. The problem is that the way the Red Raiders defend — by icing ball-screens — is going to leave Northern Kentucky’s best player, Drew McDonald, free for pick-and-pop threes the entire afternoon.

PICK: Personally, I will likely be staying away from this line, but I do think that Texas Tech is the side that you want to be on.
16 Questions: Friday’s First Round Games--Rush the Court
3) Texas Tech vs. 14) Northern Kentucky: Will Texas Tech’s loss to West Virginia have any carry-over effects? While Texas Tech held the Mountaineers to just 38.8 percent shooting, the Red Raiders gave up 19 offensive rebounds and 20 points at the charity stripe.

Drew McDonald, Northern Kentucky

The 6-8 senior led the Norse in both scoring and rebounding and also was second on the team in assists, earning Horizon League first-team honors for the third straight season and being named the conference's player of the year. He also shoots 40.9 percent from 3-point range, and his long-range shot with 1.6 seconds left saved Northern Kentucky in their Horizon League tournament semifinal win over Oakland.
Davis: My ATS picks for Friday’s first-round games--The Athletic
Texas Tech (-14½) vs. Northern Kentucky, 1:30 p.m., TNT. The Norse are a great offensive team. They’ve surpassed 90 points eight times this season, and they get assists on 62.1 percent of their field goals, which ranks fifth in the nation. They also have an explosive offensive player in 6-8 senior forward Drew McDonald, the Horizon League Player of the Year, who averages 19.1 points and 9.5 rebounds a game. But I think it’s safe to say Northern Kentucky has not gone up against a defense like the one Chris Beard will throw its way. The Red Raiders led the country in defensive efficiency and were second in defensive field goal percentage (36.8). They improved dramatically on offense over the last month of the season. I also like that Texas Tech is coming off a loss to West Virginia in the Big 12 tournament. I expect the Red Raiders to come in a little bit angry. The pick: Texas Tech

After a surprising exit in the Big 12 Tournament, it’s difficult to foresee that happening again to Texas Tech in the first round. Meanwhile, Northern Kentucky has a decent offense, but doesn’t shoot many threes or get to the free-throw line. That’s not a way to get past this Tech defense.

Northern Kentucky coach John Brannen. He was hired in 2015, the year his boss at Alabama, Anthony Grant, was let go by the Crimson Tide. So Brannen walked away from potential unemployment into a head coaching position that’s essentially in his hometown: Alexandria, Ky., where he grew up, is 6.5 miles from NKU’s Highland Heights campus. After a first season that saw his team go 9-21, Brannen has led the Norse to two NCAA Tournaments, one NIT, two Horizon League regular season titles and two tournament titles. Talk about a dream come true, for both coach and program.

57. Northern Kentucky

Forward Drew McDonald leads the Norse, who are making their second NCAA tournament appearance in just seven years in Division-I. McDonald is the fulcrum of the offense, but Northern Kentucky also shares the ball in a free-flowing offense that ranks fifth in the country in assist percentage. McDonald has also proven he can get it done in the clutch, sinking a buzzer-beating three to beat Oakland in the semifinals of the Horizon League tournament.

John Brannen has built NKU into a Horizon League power; this is the Norse's second NCAA trip in three seasons. Drew McDonald is the 6-8 handful, a senior stretch big who can cash 3-pointers, trash you on defense and make way for his teammates to score from all over the floor.

Best Guy You’ve Never Heard Of

Quick, show of hands: Who knows who won the Horizon League Player of the Year award this year? Anyone? Ok, neither did I until I started poking around for candidates for this category. Let me introduce you to Drew McDonald, a 6’8”, 250 pound forward for Northern Kentucky. 20.1 points per game was second best in the HL this season and his 9.7 rebounds were tops in the conference. So I know you’re thinking right now, “yeah, he’s some big dude that pounded down the Horizon League. So what?” How’s about a Horizon League best 45.2% from three-point range in league play and 40.6% for the whole season. He wasn’t just voted the HL POY, he’s also the KenPom conference player of the year, which makes sense given the shooting. He’s got crazy touch both from long range and inside, and he’s one of the 20 best defensive rebounders in the country in terms of rate per KenPom, and he’s a pretty snazzy passer, too. Is any of this going to help the Norse get past Texas Tech in the first round? Yeah, probably not. But he’s a whirlwind of a player that deserves the accolade here.

This is the second Big Dance appearance in three seasons for the Norse, who are not even a decade into Division I existence. John Brannen is an underrated coach.

D – Drew McDonald

Drew McDonald led the Northern Kentucky Norse throughout the regular season and even more so in the Horizon League Tournament, including a buzzer-beater to win in the semifinals. The senior forward who averaged 19.1 points and 9.5 rebounds per game faces a tough matchup with his 14-seeded Norse team as they take on Texas Tech. If they’re going to come through with a huge upset, McDonald’s efforts will be leading the charge.
West: Michigan stands in the way of Gonzaga and the Final Four--The Athletic
14. Northern Kentucky Norse

Opponent: No. 3 Texas Tech

When: Friday in Tulsa, Okla.

Record: 26-8 (13-5 Horizon League)

How they got here: Northern Kentucky and Wright State shared the regular-season championship and split their two matchups, but the Norse won, 77-66, in the winner-take-all conference championship game.

What you need to know: The still relatively young Division I program (it joined in 2012) is making its second NCAA Tournament appearance. It very nearly didn’t happen, as big man Drew McDonald had to knock down a 3 in the final seconds to beat Oakland in the semifinals. The Norse started Horizon play 8-1 before losing ground in the second half of the schedule.

Spotlight on: McDonald’s shot to send NKU to the championship was huge, and it came near the end of what has been a great career for the big man. The 6-8, 250-pound McDonald is averaging 19.1 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists a night and has averaged double-digit scoring in each of his four seasons.
