2018 NCAA Tournament Bracket Breakdown: The South Region--College Basketball Talk
The No. 3 seed in the South is Tennessee, who draws Wright State in the first round of the tournament, while No. 6 seed Miami draws Loyola-Chicago in the first round of the tournament. The Ramblers won at Florida back in December and will be one of the trendy upset picks in the first round of the tournament. They won both the Missouri Valley regular season and tournament, and as a No. 11 seed, they’re rated higher than Davidson, who won the Atlantic 10 tournament.

56. WRIGHT STATE: My favorite part about this Wright State team is that their best player is probably Loudon Love, a 6-foot-9, 275 pound former offensive lineman that is coming off of a torn ACL and changed his last name to Love from Vollbrecht. How can you not root for a team with a guy like that?

14. Wright State

Nickname: Raiders Location: Dayton, Ohio.

Record: 25-9, 14-4. Bid: Horizon champ.

Last appearance: 2007, lost to Pittsburgh in Round of 64.

Coach: Scott Nagy (0-3 in three appearances).

Overview: Nagy has gotten the Raiders to play top-notch defense, ranking in the top-50 nationally in points allowed (66.0) and field goal percentage defense (41.5%). One of the best players, Justin Mitchell, left the team in early January, but the Raiders rallied. This is a well-balanced offensive team, with youth and experience. There’s also size on the roster, which can’t be said for all mid-majors. Veteran guard Grant Benzinger is dynamic and drives this team. Freshman guard Jaylon Hall adds a boost off the bench.

Projected starters: Grant Benzinger, 6-3, Sr. (14.5 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 88.8 FT%); G Mark Hughes, 6-4, Jr. (9.9 ppg, 3.0 apg, 83.1 FT%); G Cole Gentry, 5-10, So. (9.2 ppg, 81.4 FT%); C Parker Ernsthausen, 6-11, Jr. (5.2 ppg, 2.6 rpg); C Louden Love, 6-9, Fr. (12.9 ppg, 9.8 rpg, 53.1 FG%).

#3 Tennessee vs. #14 Wright State
Tennessee has had a surprisingly good season and it will not end here. The Volunteers have quite a few scoring options, led by slasher Grant Williams and his 15.3 points per game. When Williams is getting to the basket, it opens up space on the perimeter for the shooters. And this team has plenty of shooting threats who will take smart shots. Most notable is 6-5 small forward Admiral Schofield who is second on the team behind Williams with 13.8 points per game.

(14) WRIGHT STATE – Billy Wampler and Sharif Chambliss. The Eau Claire Regis sophomore Wampler is redshirting this season after transferring from Drake, but he'll be on the roster next year along with current Pewaukee High School senior Grant Basile, who's having a huge finish to his career and committed to WSU earlier this year. Assistant coach Sharif Chambliss, a Racine St. Catherine's alumnus who also played for a year at Wisconsin, was there to watch Basile's 29-point performance against Whitnall in an electric sectional semifinal. Wampler started 16 games and played in 31 last year for Drake, averaging 9.6 points and 2.5 rebounds per game. Regis finished 26-1 and qualified for the Division 3 state tournament when Wampler was a senior in 2015.

Tourney trip: Third (last in 2007). Tourney record: 0-2. Facing Wisconsin teams: Never. Leading scorer: Grant Benzinger, 14.5 ppg. Best name: Loudon Love

2. Perhaps the opposite is true of Wright State.

In Tennessee, the Raiders get another defense-first team and one that hasn’t been in the NCAA tournament since going to the Sweet 16 in 2014.

With a couple of big guys in the starting lineup, including imposing redshirt freshman Loudon Love, Wright State could present a unique challenge to a Tennessee team that isn’t overly big.
