Drew McDonald, So. F, Northern Kentucky
He followed up a promising freshman season with an even better campaign this year, one that included scoring 20 or more points in three of the four games leading up to the Horizon League championship, where he had a double-double of 14 points and 12 rebounds.

BLUE BLOODS IN ACTION

On Thursday, both Gonzaga and Villanova, as No. 1 seeds, were pushed in the first half before pulling away in sloppy games in the second half. On Friday, the tournament’s five blue-bloods — plus Louisville! — all square against teams seeded 14 or lower. Do any of them have a shot?

No. 2 Kentucky (-20) vs. No. 15 Northern Kentucky, 9:40 p.m., CBS: I actually think NKU makes this into a slugfest, and I think they give Malik Monk some trouble. Kentucky wins, but NKU cover. PREDICTION: Northern Kentucky (+20)
Day 4 Picking The Lines--Basketball Predictions
Kentucky (-20) over Northern Kentucky: I don't have strong feelings about this spread. I chose Kentucky simply because the Wildcats have tended to out-athlete inferior opponents and run them off the court this season, rather than just letting them hang around.

15. Northern Kentucky

Nickname: Norse. Location: Newport, Ky.
Record: 24-10, 12-6. Bid: Horizon champ
Last appearance: First appearance.
Coach: John Brannen (first appearance)
Twitter: @NKUNorseMBB

Overview: The Norse are in their first NCAA tournament in their first year of eligibility. Although lacking size, they rank in the top 50 nationally in rebounding margin, a key part of their Horizon League tournament title victory against Milwaukee. The Norse’s go-to player is forward Drew McDonald, who can score either in the paint with quick moves and jump hooks or outside.

Projected starters: F Drew McDonald, 6-7, So. (16.4 ppg, 7.7 rpg), F Jordan Garnett, 6-5, Jr. (4.8 ppg 3.5 rpg), F Carson Williams, 6-5, Fr. (10.5 ppg, 5.8 rpg) G Cole Murray, 6-7, Sr. (10.2 ppg, 3.2 rpg), G Lavone Holland II, 6-1, Jr. (14.3 ppg, 4.1 apg)

No. 10 Wichita State Shockers (30-4)* vs. No. 7 Dayton Flyers (24-7), 7:10 p.m.
No. 15 Northern Kentucky Norse (24-10)* vs. No. 2 Kentucky Wildcats (29-5)*, approx. 9:40 p.m.

At the end of the night, expect Kentucky to send its in-state “rival” (they’ve only met once since NKU started its move to D1, back in the second game of the 2013-14 season) packing. But the opener is a bit more up in the air, as again, two great mid-major programs meet in a 7-vs.-10 showdown. I would say that UK has more to fear from Wichita State than Dayton, though.

The Raiders are 24-8 on the season, and went 15-3 in the Horizon League, good enough to tie Green Bay for first place.

They are lead in scoring by Chelsea Welch, who is averaging 18.6 per game.

While they aren’t the best shooting team around, they average 40 rebounds a game, and have 5 players that score 9 or more.
