Opening Weekend Games to Watch--Define Mid-Major
Saturday
...
9:00pm - Cleveland St. vs. Akron
...
Sunday
...
2:30pm - Iona vs. Valparaiso

This might just turn out to be the game of the weekend. Iona disappointed last year by not making the NCAA Tournament despite being the clear favorite in their conference. Valpo, on the other hand, has had great success under Bryce Drew making NCAA Tournaments in 2 of the last 3 years.

Also of note in the win was the play of forwards Anton Grady and Eric Hamilton. Grady, a grad student who transferred in from Cleveland State, accounted for 12 points and three rebounds while the freshman Hamilton added 13 points and seven boards off the bench. They’ll be two key players moving forward for a team that has to account for the loss of Tekele Cotton and Darius Carter from last season’s Sweet 16 team.

Clayborne Brings More Size to the Cleveland State Men’s Basketball

Last month, Vikings fans received word that three recruits, Richardson Maitre, Andy Lucien and Evan Clayborne, verbally committed to CSU. Since then, Maitre, the native of Montreal, has re-opened his search and Lucien, the 6-7 local product from North Olmsted, has yet to sign with the Vikings.

That left Clayborne, who followed up his verbal with a signed NLI to play for Cleveland State. His arrival next year will continue the path of Vikings from Dayton. Of course, while notables such as Norris Cole, Aaron Pogue and, presently, Andre Yates hail from Dunbar High School, Clayborne comes from another Dayton school, Thurdgood Marshall.

With his signing, Clayborne, a 6-7 forward, will added to frontcourt depth that has increased over the past couple of years, as evidenced by the recent addition of Jeron Rogers and Jibri Blount this season.

And of course, that new season kicks off on Saturday, when Cleveland State travels to Kent State to face Akron in the Coaches vs. Cancer doubleheader.

Ely, Miller Added to Women’s Basketball

As CSU women’s basketball coach Kate Peterson Abiad prepares her team for tonight’s opener at home against Bucknell, two of her verbal commits signed their letters to join the program next season.

Mariah Miller, the 5-11 forward from Brookfield East High School, will provide the Vikings with yet more length in the frontcourt, plus continues Peterson Abiad’s pipeline of high school players from Wisconsin. For the second signee, Cleveland State turned east, where they locked down Jade Ely, a 5-9 guard out of Penn Hills, Pennsylvania.

2015-16 College Basketball Non-Conference Schedules: MVC And A Few Other Mids--Blogging the Bracket
Horizon
Valparaiso Crusaders (90)

@Oregon (28), Iona (81)*, Belmont (95), @Belmont (95), @Oregon State (103)*, @Rhode Island (107), @Indiana State (125), IPFW (188), Missouri State (200), @Ball State (286), @Chicago State (325), Indiana Kokomo*, Trinity Christian*

Average opponent four-year ranking: 187.15
Schedule rank among at-large contenders: 91st

If you combine this non-conference schedule with the typical quality of the Horizon League, the Crusaders might just be able to knick an at-large should they fail to win the conference's automatic bid in Detroit in March. Road games against Oregon, Oregon State, and Rhode Island combined with a visit from Iona (a team that would build a schedule just like this) and home-and-home series with OVC Tournament champion Belmont might give Valpo a strong computer profile come March. Their chances can only improve if they actually manage to win some of these ambitious matchups.
