News On The Horizon 11/12/2015

The Morning Dish – Wednesday, November 11, 2015--Hoopville
Expectations are sky-high for Valparaiso this year, so much so that anything less than a dominant run in the Horizon League and an NCAA bid will be seen as a disappointment. Alec Peters is the type of inside/outside scorer anyone would love, Vashil Fernandez is a legitimate defensive center, and it sounds like Shane Hammink was a revelation on the team’s August exhibition trip to Canada. The Crusaders could easily win their first NCAA tourney game since their memorable Sweet 16 appearance in 1998, but the Horizon will continue to be tricky. Oakland also is set to give Valpo fits, and the battle between Peters and the Golden Grizzlies’ Kahlil Felder for player of the year honors will be fun.

Jan. 8: Valparaiso at Oakland. Friday night has the two favorites in the Horizon League, with the defending champs and this year’s favorite on the road against the upstart challengers. Also the top two players in the HL in Alec Peters (Valpo) and Kahlil Felder (Oakland). Honorable mention: Western Michigan at Akron

USA TODAY Sports' preseason bracketology--USA Today
No. 4 Louisville: The Cardinals will have a cloud of off-court issues hovering over their season, but the on-the-court outlook is a good one, starting with Drexel transfer Damion Lee, a proven scorer who can carry this team offensively.

No. 13 Valparaiso: Coach Bryce Drew has a team capable of going on a deep run in the NCAA tournament, starting with the likely Horizon League Player of the Year Alec Peters.

Sunday, Nov. 22: Valpo (41) at Oregon (23).

Valpo, the team we think is the best coming out of any one-bid league this season, has a load of really good games, but this is their toughest. And it's not totally unlikely Bryce Drew's guys goes into Eugene and get a win. If the D shows up and Alec Peters holds his own down low (which he should), this could be one of those upsets you miss because of a football Sunday. So don't miss it!
