Halfway Through Wednesday Night--SB Nation Indiana

NCAA Basketball Week 5: Indiana Week Night Previews

The non-conference schedule is now in full swing, and several teams have games against rivals from other conferences:

* Purdue at Valparaiso - Tuesday, 9 p.m. (ESPNU): After winning in Blacksburg in Overtime, and crushing Alabama, the Boilermakers travel up I-65 to take on Homer Drew's Valparaiso Crusaders. Purdue won last year's matchup by 26 in West Lafayette. E'twan Moore and JuJuan Johnson lead the Boilermakers in Points, Rebounds, and Assists per game, and have been a two-man wrecking crew so far this season. SB Nation Indiana Pick: Purdue
...
* Butler at Xavier - Thursday, 9:00 p.m. (ESPN2): Butler looks to rebound off their third loss of the season on Saturday, an 82-70 loss to Duke, a rematch from the National Championship game from April. The loss put the Bulldogs at 4-3 on the season, very uncharacteristic for them. They travel to Cincinnati to take on the Xavier Musketeers, who are having their own struggles this season. XU is 5-2 on the season, but that includes a home OT win against Wofford and a loss at Miami, OH. While this game doesn't have the same sizzle as in years past, they are arguably the two best "mid-major" programs in the country. SBNation Indiana Pick: Butler.

7:00pm Detroit @ Western Michigan– Jason Calliste has been playing well in his last four games. He’s averaging 15 points, 4.25 rebounds and a steal in about 31 minutes a game. He’s only failed to score less than 10 points twice this season and once was after coming off a 20 point game. Guess how many points he had in his last game?

Western Michigan 71, Detroit 69 — Pulled. The heck. Off. The Broncos held off despite numerous dry spells in the second half wherein UDM kept tractoring back into the game. Here's your textbook "team effort" game: five of the nine Broncos who played netted at least 10 points, led by Nate Hutcheson with 14. And nice job shooting better at frees (9-of-18) than threes (8-of-18), but just barely. Next game: Saturday, 12/11 at Georgia State

Milwaukee at Wisconsin, Big Ten Network (9 p.m. ET): The Panthers head to Madison looking to end a 17-game losing streak against the Badgers. Wisconsin won by 10 at the Kohl Center last season, and a similar result looks to be in the cards tonight.

Non-Conference Opponents Update--Hammer and Rails

The NCAA Tournament is all about RPI. The higher the better as long as you have a good record. The Big Ten, as long as we finish in the top three, will give us a nice RPI boost, but we need one from our non-conference schedule as well. Last season we got a great boost that was wiped out because of the Hummel injury. This year we probably won't get as big of a push, but I'll try to keep track of it as the season goes along. Here is an update on what our non-conference opponents are doing. For the record, our current RPI is 51.
...
Valparaiso - 6-3, RPI: 35 - I know the Crusaders won't stay this high, but I was stunned that we now technically have a top 50 road victory. Two of their three losses have come against top 20 teams, and the third (Ohio) was an NCAA Tournament team a year ago. They are already 2-0 in the Horizon League, which will be a tough league this year that features more than Butler. I doubt this will stay a top 50 win, but there is the potential for it to be a second top 100 true road win. If it stays there, that means our three true road games will all be of the top 100 variety, fighting the myth that we played a weak non-conference schedule. I doubt any other major conference team has three top 100 true road non-conference games.
