Some exhibition nonsense for your consideration over the weekend: #9 Florida 92, Florida Tech 58 (Kenny Boynton had 24 pts on 10-15 FG); #17 Butler 90, Florida Southern 70 (Matt Howard had 19/7); Louisville 83, Northern Kentucky 66 (UL opened its new KFC/Yum Center with newly-eligible Gorgui Dieng’s 14/11); Pittsburgh 104, Northwood 62 (Ashton Gibbs had 25 pts). It seems like every year some ranked team ends up losing one of these games — wonder who it will be this year?

Rookies Gordon Hayward and Jeremy Evans are also candidates to enter the starting lineup. However, they would not garner major minutes as first-unit players. Instead, they would initially take the court to cut down on recent foul trouble for Utah’s main scorers, following a trend Sloan has employed during past seasons.

Evans is still saying thanks. Gwyn has become his best friend. She helped guide him from high school ball to Western Kentucky University. And as the bighearted but inexperienced Jazz forward has navigated his way through the NBA, his mother has been his closest ally. The duo talk on the phone at least once a day, resorting to text messages when either Gwyn is working or Evans is on the court.

The mother-son pair are so tight that Evans’ newest companion couldn’t help but notice — and tease.

“Gordon’s [Hayward] like, ‘Man, how many times do you talk to your mom every day?’ ” Evans said, smiling. “I’m like, ‘A lot.’ ”
