News On The Horizon 1/19/2010

Red Line Lounge, Week 10--The Mid-Majority

KW: How are things in the Horizon League? I know you spent a few moments there this weekend.

DL: And I know you spent a Thursday night in the HL as well, as you got to see Butler and Cleveland State up close. I'd imagine you agree that after all the weekend's results came in, it's now pretty clear that Butler is head-and-shoulders above the rest in the HL. Detroit had an opportunity to make a statement in Green Bay, but came up short. Wright State went 0-2 on their Wisconsin roadie, losing both games by a total of eight points. Of course, Green Bay was the big winner of the weekend, but after seeing them get blown out at Milwaukee the previous week, I have my reservations.

Fans in Green Bay got their money's worth over the weekend. The Phoenix scored victories over Wright State and Detroit, each by just two points. In the process, they took over sole possession of 2nd place in the Horizon League.

Which teams benefit the most from nonconference scheduling?--Seth Davis: Hoop Thoughts

So now that we can make some projections, I've assembled a list of eight potential bubble teams who helped themselves during the first few months of the season, and another eight who hurt themselves. I've placed the NC SOS rankings in parentheses. (As always, my data comes from Jerry Palm's CollegeRPI.com.) We'll find out in two short months just how much these rankings matter.

Butler (8). The Bulldogs are ranked 24th in the RPI, but all it would take is a couple of losses in the Horizon League to drop them onto the bubble. They've got good wins over Ohio State and Xavier (in that weird clock-malfunction game), and their win at Northwestern back on Nov. 18 is looking better by the day.
