News On The Horizon 1/12/2010

TMM A.M. - January 11, 2010--The Mid-Majority

What's Up™?: Loyola (Chicago) -- If anyone in Hoops Nation is wishing the calendar would flip back to 2009, it's Jim Whitesell at Loyola. His Ramblers haven't won in 2010, three straight losses to be exact. It began with a 17-point drubbing at home against Detroit, and continued this weekend when they lost a pair of road games in eastern Ohio at Cleveland State and at Youngstown State. The things that were leading to wins early in the season are now leading to losses. Their 3-point shooting is less consistent, their Assist-to-Basket Percentage is dropping, and their turnover numbers are inching higher. It's time for the Ramblers to take a deep breath and prepare for a bragging-rights showdown this week. On Friday, they'll be looking for Horizon League win #3 when they head to Chicago's south side to take on the UIC Flames.

Weekend Recap--Ballin' is a Habit

Butler 64, Detroit 62 OT: Shelvin Mack scored with a minute left in overtime to give Butler a 64-62 win on the road against a valiant Detroit team. Gordon Hayward had 17 points and 7 boards, but he missed a free throw at the end of regulation that would have won the game for the Bulldogs. Matt Howard had just 10 points and 4 boards, but more importantly he played a season high 43 minutes while committing just two fouls.

DL: They've really been disappointing. Goes to show you how big a role coaching plays on our level. When you don't have access to all the talent, you gotta have something...or you've got nothing. Wow, that was enlightening. Let's quickly move past that to avoid any further embarrassment. What about another "League" like, say, the Horizon League. Butler up by two games after surviving in Detroit Sunday afternoon. Still impressed (not shocked) by the turnaround going on in Calihan Hall. The Titans are T-O-U-G-H...something a lot of teams in the Horizon League aren't.

KW: Got to catch the Friday night tilt at Valpo, and the Titans really brought the hammer in the second half. But the second-"hottest" team in the league behind the Bulldogs has to be Cleveland State, winners of three straight after a horrible nonconference season. I'll be there at the big title game rematch this Thursday at Hinkle, to see if the depleted Vikings are a legitimate spoiler or just another .500 team.
