Horizon tourney predicted champ: Northern Kentucky (#4 seed)
Dates: February 28-March 7
Location: Campus sites and Indianapolis, IN
2022 tourney champ: Wright State (#4 seed)
Fun fact: only 3 champs in past 6 years are Cleveland State/Northern Kentucky/Wright State
Seeding: 6 of past 7 champs were not #1 seed
Youngstown State has been the class of the league all season but the Penguins have never even made the title game so perhaps they are not ready to ascend to the summit this year. The Norse and Vikings have been hot on their heels all year and both of them split their season series with the Penguins. Cleveland State and Northern Kentucky also split the season series with each other in as close a fashion as possible, with each winning on their home court by a single point. Since I do not like 1st-year coaches, I will give the edge to Darrin Horn over Daniyal Robinson. Northern Kentucky has had 7 straight winning seasons thanks to JR G Marques Warrick having his 3rd straight year with 15+ PPG. The key to their success is defense: 9.5 SPG and 63.3 PPG allowed are both top-30 in the nation.

Basketball Picks by KY - Conference Tournament Best Bets--collegesportsmadness

Horizon League Tournament 2/28-3/7

Winner: Youngstown State +150

Favorite Bet: Northern Kentucky +350

This is one of my favorites leagues to follow each year because it is almost always close and 2023 was no different. Three teams held 14-6 records while one, Youngstown State (hit that +850 future), finished 15-5.

I agree Youngstown State is the best team in the conference so I’ll stick with them as my pick, but my bet will be on Northern Kentucky. Northern Kentucky is the second-best team in this conference according to KenPom and the final two games are set to be played in Indianapolis where the Norse are less than a two-hour drive away. I expect the fans to show up to the semifinal and finals game which gives them the slight edge in my opinion.

Welcome to March! Six strange NCAA Tournament résumés, best turnaround stories of 2023 as the madness awaits--CBS Sports

Eight great small-school turnaround seasons

College basketball has 360-plus D-I schools. That's 50-70 too many. But a redeeming feature is how, each year, there are a number of teams that finally emerge from the mud to post big turnarounds. Here are the ones you should know about. There's no telling how many of these teams will make it to the NCAA Tournament, so let's at the very least give them some flowers now as we ramp up for postseason play.

Youngstown State (23-8): The Penguins joined D-I in the early '80s and have never made an NCAA Tournament, nor have they ever won more games than this season. Jerrod Calhoun's crew not only rates as the surprise of the Horizon League — they just won their first conference title ever. Next up: Trying to stop Antoine Davis from becoming D-I's all-time leading scorer on Thursday night. Come on, tell me you don't wanna see the Penguins dance. Horizon League title game is next Tuesday.

Milwaukee (20-10): Bart Lundy was a nondescript Division II hire 11 months ago. He's turned things around deftly in no time. The Panthers are having their best season since 2015-16 and are a viable threat to win the Horizon League automatic bid after averaging 10.3 wins the past four seasons.

15. Horizon League

February 22 – March 7 | Campus Sites (First Round/Quarterfinals) / Indiana Farmers Coliseum, Indianapolis, IN

This might be the first tournament on the list that is worth the time purely to watch two great offensive players go to work one final time. Detroit’s Antoine Davis and Youngstown State’s Dwayne Cahill are both fifth-year seniors who are putting together fantastic individual seasons so far. Cohill’s Penguins are the 4th-highest scoring team in the country, and could give a 2-seed some issues in the Big Dance. Antoine Davis, on the other hand, doesn’t need to win the auto-bid to gather an audience. The senior guard is just 63 points away from breaking Pete Maravich’s scoring record, and a win at home against Fort Wayne would put him in prime position to break it in the quarterfinals.

Transfers to watch in low- and mid-major conference tournaments this week--ON3

Youngstown State G Dwayne Cohill

Transfer from: Dayton
The buzz: After spending three seasons at Dayton (two as a reserve, one as a redshirt because of injury), Dwayne Cohill (6-2, 180) has become one of the best players in the Horizon League for Youngstown State. The up-tempo Penguins won the regular-season title in the Horizon and Cohill makes them go. He leads the team in scoring (17.8 ppg), assists and steals. He also is shooting 52.5 percent from the field – a notable figure for a guard – and 46.2 percent from 3-point range. To top it off, Cohill is at 85.7 percent from the line (120-of-140) for a Penguins program looking for its first-ever NCAA tournament bid. Youngstown has four players averaging in double figures, and three are transfers: Cohill and Fs Malek Green (Canisius) and Adrian Nelson (Northern Kentucky).
