NCAA Basketball: Ranking all 363 D-I head coaches for 2022-23 season--Busting Brackets

355. Matt Crenshaw (IUPUI) (Last year: 353)

  • Overall record: 3-26

In the long run, Crenshaw might be a dynamic hire at IUPUI, but it’s hard to be excited after a rough first season. Crenshaw played and coached for the Jaguars for much of the last two decades, but finished just 3-26 in his debut season. Clearly, the team should be better in the coming seasons, but a last-place finish in the Horizon League and a dismal record isn’t a great start for any coach. Still, Crenshaw could absolutely rise up this list in the years ahead.

342. Will Ryan (Green Bay) (Last year: 331)

  • Overall record: 13-42

His father may be a Hall of Fame coach, but Ryan’s own head coaching career is off to a rocky start. A former player and assistant under father Bo at Wisconsin, he had a decent head coaching debut at D2 Wheeling, but has struggled in his first two years at Green Bay, finishing just 5-25 last season. The Phoenix have been a solid program the last decade but are really scuffling in recent years, meaning Ryan needs a turnaround pretty soon.

190. Andrew Toole (Robert Morris) (Last year: 174)

  • Overall record: 200-193

A former guard and New York native, Toole has been entrenched at Robert Morris for the last fifteen years and has been head coach of the Colonials since 2010. Initially, he led Robert Morris to a tremendous level of success, with five postseason appearances and a pair of NEC Tournament titles in his first decade in charge. The program moved to the Horizon League in 2020 and the last two seasons have been really tough, finishing just 12-39 combined these last two seasons. Can Toole help this program transition into a Horizon League contender this season?

184. Jon Coffman (Purdue Fort Wayne) (Last year: 206)

  • Overall record: 139-114

Coffman had a number of years as a collegiate assistant, including a long stint at Stetson, before landing in Fort Wayne way back in 2011. After three years on staff, he was promoted to head coach in 2014 and has had a great impact on the Mastodons program. He led the program to a Summit League regular season title in his second season as well as four straight postseason bids. This past year, Purdue Fort Wayne tied for the Horizon League regular season title in just their second year in the conference, boasting a 21-12 record and a great step forward in their new league.

140. Greg Kampe (Oakland) (Last year: 141)

  • Overall record: 400-342

Kampe is a rare breed in the coaching world, having served as the head coach at Oakland since 1984. Now entering his 39th year leading the Golden Grizzlies, he’s been through a lot with the program and the school. He led the program into D1 athletics back in 1999 and won three Summit League championships, taking the program to back-to-back NCAA Tournaments back in the early 2010’s. A 20-win season this past year was Oakland’s best in half a decade, though the Grizzlies still hunt for their first Horizon League title after nearly a decade of membership.

126. Mike Davis (Detroit) (Last year: 111)

  • Overall record: 397-310
  • Final Four in 2002

Davis has had quite the experience in his head coaching career. He succeeded Bob Knight at Indiana and took the Hoosiers to the national title game in 2002. He took UAB to an NCAA Tournament across six years before transforming Texas Southern into the SWAC’s best program, leading those Tigers to four trips to the Big Dance. He’s been at Detroit since 2018, though the results have been less impressive with the Titans, with just a 45-69 mark in a winnable Horizon League.

331. Daniyal Robinson (Cleveland State) (Last year: N/A)

  • Overall record: 0-0

After some success as an assistant coach over the years, Robinson begins his head coaching career at Cleveland State this season. He previously spent the last seven years on staff at Iowa State and served under Porter Moser at three different schools, including a short stint at Loyola-Chicago. Robinson takes over a Vikings program that former coach Dennis Gates left in marvelous shape, but can this former Big 12 assistant continue this success in the Horizon League?

NCAA Basketball: Ranking all 363 D-I head coaches for 2022-23 season--Busting Brackets

244. Bart Lundy (Milwaukee) (Last year: N/A)

  • Overall record: 96-87

Lundy takes over as head coach at Milwaukee this season, hoping to turn around a Panthers program that has been struggling recently. He’s got a ton of previous head coaching experience and was even a staffer at Marquette. Across two stints at Queens, he took the Royals to a plethora of D2 Tournaments, and even a few deep postseason runs. He also spent six years at High Point, with decent success in the Big South and a record above .500. Can any of this success translate with the Panthers in the Horizon League in the coming years?

NCAA Basketball: Ranking all 363 D-I head coaches for 2022-23 season--Busting Brackets

103. Darrin Horn (Northern Kentucky) (Last year: 107)

  • Overall record: 228-143

Horn enters his fourth season at Northern Kentucky, the third different D1 school that he’s served as head coach. Previously a successful assistant at Marquette and Texas, he led Western Kentucky to a surprise Sweet Sixteen way back in 2008. Horn followed that success with a disappointing four-year stretch at South Carolina in the SEC. However, he’s bounced back with the Norse, leading Northern Kentucky to the Horizon League Tournament title in his first season, and is 57-32 through three seasons.

93. Scott Nagy (Wright State) (Last year: 101)

  • Overall record: 298-161

Nagy has been impressive during his coaching career, originally beginning his head coaching sojourn at South Dakota State back in 1995. Across the next 21 seasons, he led the Jackrabbits to a slew of D2 Tournaments before their transition to D1. After leading the program to its first three NCAA Tournaments, he took the Wright State job in 2016 and has been just as successful there. Nagy is a 3-time Horizon League Coach of the Year, has won three conference regular season titles, and just led Wright State to a second NCAA Tournament this past season.

230. Jerrod Calhoun (Youngstown State) (Last year: 255)

  • Overall record: 72-86

There were some incredible influences early in Calhoun’s career, as he played under Rollie Massimino and coached under Bob Huggins, spending time with him most recently at West Virginia. Calhoun’s head coaching career got off to a great start, leading Fairmont State to a number of D2 Tournament appearances. He took the Youngstown State job in 2017 and has actually exceeded expectations, winning 19 games this past season and slowly building this program potentially into a Horizon League contender.
