Cincinnati basketball coaching candidates: Erik Martin, Dennis Gates, Archie Miller and other names to watch--The Athletic

Call list

(In alphabetical order)

Dennis Gates, Cleveland State coach: Gates, a rising star in the college ranks, has been a popular name on the carousel already this offseason, and for good reason. The 41-year-old just went 19-8 record in his second year at Cleveland State, capped with a Horizon League tournament championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. He sparked an impressive two-year turnaround with the Vikings, taking a team that finished 11-21 in his first season and 313th in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency to 169th in 2020-21.

Gates was a candidate for the Marquette and DePaul vacancies this offseason and previously spent eight years as an assistant at Florida State under Leonard Hamilton. Gates would bring head coaching experience without too high of a price tag — his current buyout from Cleveland State is $300,000.

Brian and Justin’s smart money is on…

While bringing in a brand (or familiar) name can stabilize the operation and build some instant faith and credibility, the priority here must be creating a positive and supportive atmosphere with real and honest connections to the players. Miller’s ability to do that was a question by the end at Indiana. So the move should be a forward-thinking, potentially generational hire in Gates, who has impressed other schools during interviews since the carousel started spinning and who will bring revitalizing energy and toughness to the program. That’s a combo Cincinnati fans surely can get behind.
