Ranking top available college basketball transfers and recruits for 2021 offseason--Heat Check CBB

2. Patrick Baldwin Jr., Sussex Hamilton (WI)

Freshman | F | 6-9 | No. 4 overall recruit

Another potentially ideal threat for the modern game, Patrick Baldwin Jr. is an elite shooting prospect with superb size at 6-9. While this might be setting the bar high, the Wisconsin native has drawn comparisons to Klay Thompson. He is as smooth as they come as a shot-maker, particularly from 3-point range, with pristine form. With his combination of size, length, and athleticism, he also projects as an elite wing defender. PBJ is a clear-cut five-star prospect and a one-and-done that will be remarkably impactful at the collegiate level.

Baldwin’s recruitment has been a bit of a mystery for a while but rumors have swirled around two possible favorites: Duke and Milwaukee. The Blue Devils represent the traditional “blue blood path” for a five-star as they present the opportunity to play a major role on a national-title-contending squad before heading to the NBA. The Panthers, on the other hand, are led by Baldwin’s father at head coach. Should PBJ stay in-state with Milwaukee, he would immediately emerge as the Horizon League’s best player.

29. AJ Bramah

Old school: Robert Morris | New school: Arizona State

Bramah averaged 21 points and 10.3 rebounds in 12 games in 12 games this season as a 6-7 wing. Predicting how that production will translate to the Pac-12 for a player with no outside shot is tough, but you can't blame Arizona State for taking a swing.

Cincinnati basketball coaching candidates: Erik Martin, Dennis Gates, Archie Miller and other names to watch--The Athletic

Call list

(In alphabetical order)

Dennis Gates, Cleveland State coach: Gates, a rising star in the college ranks, has been a popular name on the carousel already this offseason, and for good reason. The 41-year-old just went 19-8 record in his second year at Cleveland State, capped with a Horizon League tournament championship and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. He sparked an impressive two-year turnaround with the Vikings, taking a team that finished 11-21 in his first season and 313th in KenPom’s adjusted efficiency to 169th in 2020-21.

Gates was a candidate for the Marquette and DePaul vacancies this offseason and previously spent eight years as an assistant at Florida State under Leonard Hamilton. Gates would bring head coaching experience without too high of a price tag — his current buyout from Cleveland State is $300,000.

Brian and Justin’s smart money is on…

While bringing in a brand (or familiar) name can stabilize the operation and build some instant faith and credibility, the priority here must be creating a positive and supportive atmosphere with real and honest connections to the players. Miller’s ability to do that was a question by the end at Indiana. So the move should be a forward-thinking, potentially generational hire in Gates, who has impressed other schools during interviews since the carousel started spinning and who will bring revitalizing energy and toughness to the program. That’s a combo Cincinnati fans surely can get behind.
