News On The Horizon 11/5/2019

The Morning Dish – Thursday, October 31, 2019--Hoopville
The changes didn’t stop in late March or April, either. Cleveland State fired Dennis Felton in July, while Niagara will not have the new head coach they originally hired as Patrick Beilein resigned suddenly last week. Many more assistant coaching changes occurred as well, a good number spurred by head coaching changes.

In the Horizon League, two of the usual suspects lead the way as last season’s regular season champion Wright State and Northern Kentucky should be among the picks to win. The Norse won the conference tournament and should continue where they left off with new head coach Darrin Horn, and UIC and Oakland look like the best bets to push them.

KenPom Spread: Minnesota (-19)

This is another game featuring a Big Ten team against a team outside the top 300 on KenPom at home. Even if the Gophers come out flat, this should be an easy win. Keep an eye on Minnesota’s new additions in this one. Many expect Marcus Carr and Alihan Demir to have big seasons. Daniel Oturu should overwhelm Cleveland State inside.

3MW's Bold Predictions - 2019-20--Three Man Weave
2. Jermaine Marrow leads the country in points per game, followed by Antoine Davis and Grant Riller

Marrow and Riller both lose a high-usage second banana, opening up more shots, while Davis has the greenest light in the entire country. For reference, the top returning scorers:

63. Antoine Davis, Detroit

The 6-foot-1 Alabama native put together a brilliant freshman campaign for Detroit Mercy. He averaged 26.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.6 assists in 37.4 minutes per game. He did it with high-volume shooting, but converting at a 40 percent clip overall and 38 percent from 3-point range as a freshman is a heck of a baseline to build from. (TH)

6. Detroit Mercy’s Antoine Davis will lead the nation in scoring

The coach’s son is option No. 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 on a Detroit Mercy team that now also features Brad Calipari on its roster. Davis ranked third in the country in points per game last season (26.1), and the two players in front of him — Campbell’s Chris Clemons and Hofstra’s Justin Wright-Foreman — have both graduated. Last season, Davis also became the first freshman ever to lead the Horizon League in scoring, and his 132 three-pointers broke the Division I record for triples by a freshman that had previously been held by Stephen Curry.

Lamine Diane (Cal State Northridge), Jermaine Marrow (Hampton), Markus Howard (Marquette) and a host of others will make runs at the scoring title, but ultimately, it’s going to be Davis who wears the crown.

If you’re looking forward to watching Davis torch the nets during Championship Week this year, brace yourself for some bad news. Detroit Mercy is ineligible to participate in any sort of postseason tournament this season, including the Horizon League tournament, because of subpar APR scores.

Willy Isiani

Willy Isiani is a business major, and a member of the men’s basketball team.

The first thing he does when he wakes up in the morning is eat.

“I never skip breakfast,” said Isiani. “I need energy!”

Following this is a strict schedule.

He needs to be in the weight room in Calihan Hall for 8 a.m., and then in class from 10 a.m. to noon.

At 12:15 he reviews practice and game film and eats.

At 2:30 p.m., an hour before practice starts, Isiani works on his shooting. From 3:30 to 6 p.m., he practices tirelessly with his teammates in preparation for the upcoming season.

After practice, he stays back to shoot some more.

“I do all of this to get better as a player and as a person,” said Isiani. “Basketball is one of the most important things in my life. It’s why I came all the way from Georgia (the country). It’s why I skip partying. ‘Fun’ always comes after.”

Isiani doesn’t have a problem balancing academics and athletics either.

His work ethic in basketball smoothly translates to school.

“I guess I’m just really smart,” said Isiani with a teasing smile. “I’m just joking, of course. I do my homework little by little every day during my down time, and it all just works out.”

Because of the time and effort he puts into basketball, Isiani often feels he’s working a full-time job, in addition to school.

So what keeps him focused?

“I want to pursue basketball professionally after I graduate,” he said. “I have a vision in which I imagine a road which leads to my goal. Every day, I do what I can to get a step closer to the end of that road: to eventually reach my goal.”

#23 Purdue Boilermakers vs. Green Bay Phoenix
6pm | BTN

Boilerman: YAY! BASKETBALL IS BACK!

Green Bay (Don’t you dare call them UWGB anymore) finished the season by losing in the CIT Final. They finished 4th in the Horizon League and return a full complement of seniors on their roster. They are coached by former Boilermaker alum Linc Darner. Expect the Boilers to dominate the paint. Between the flowing locks of Matt Haarms and physicality of Trevion Williams, the Phoenix and their lack of size will have their hands full. This should be a good tuneup for Matt Painter’s group with Texas inbound this weekend.

My prediction: Boilers dominate early and cruise late.

9:38 – 26:57: Game number 2 of the week provides a little bit more intrigue as the Tigers face the Northern Kentucky Norseman, who are a pretty good mid-major team (132 in KP) that made the NCAA tournament last year after winning the Horizon League. Our two hosts discuss what they think of this matchup, and areas in which they could see Northern Kentucky causing Missouri some issues, and finally give another score prediction.

22. Wright State: This much can be said with certainty. The Raiders will win a lot of games this season. A soft non-conference schedule leads to a down Horizon league. If you’re a fan of old school, pound the rock basketball, allow me to introduce you to your new favorite team, led by 6-foot-8, 260-pound Loudon Love going to work on the low block. The real question is whether the Raiders can get back to playing the kind of defense that led them to the Big Dance in 2017-2018 (12th in defensive efficiency in the country).
