On day two of the Gulf Coast Showcase, Drake edged Northeastern 59-56 and Murray State held off Weber State 69-68 in consolation games, and in semifinal action South Alabama pulled away from Miami (Ohio) 82-71 and La Salle held off Wright State 72-70.
Tonight’s Menu
The slate gets a bit lighter, but the big games don’t take a dip a day before Thanksgiving.
The Gulf Coast Showcase has one more day of action, beginning with the seventh place game between Northeastern and Weber State (11 a.m.), then the fifth place game between Drake and Murray State (1:30 p.m.), third place game between Miami (Ohio) and Wright State (5 p.m.) and the championship game between South Alabama and La Salle (7:30 p.m.)
Either South Alabama or La Salle will claim its first-ever Gulf Coast Showcase title this evening in Estero, Fla,, while the third-place game is a rematch of a regularly-scheduled game from the season’s first week. Wright State won at Miami, 88-81, back on November 9th. In the afternoon session, a pair of 2019 NCAA qualifiers—Northeastern and Murray State—will look to leave Southwest Florida with last day wins after disappointing trips.
The two 2019 NCAA qualifiers in the field in Estero, Fla. fell in Monday’s quarterfinals, but neither has a straightforward consolation matchup in this afternoon’s doubleheader. Meanwhile, both the Sun Belt and Horizon favorites advances to the evening’s championship semifinal doubleheader, where a possible MAC contender and rebuilding Atlantic 10 team will await them, respectively.
The CSUN Matadors (0-6, Big West) leave Wisconsin still winless, but at least they pushed host Green Bay last night, falling by just one, 85-84. Tonight, the Phoenix will look to claim the subregional title by topping the 2019 Patriot champs.

The UC Irvine Anteaters (3-4, Big West) fell to the Titans, 86-74, on Sunday, with their third loss in a row being UDM’s first victory of the season. Mike Davis’ squad will look to build a win streak and claim the Middleweight belt against a Louisiana outfit that’s dropped two of its last three.

Both Omaha (Washington State) and IUPUI (South Florida) won on-campus games and Southern took Nebraska to overtime, so these games should be competitive at a minimum.

The Matadors are still looking for their first win after falling to the Colgate Raiders (3-3, Patriot) 64-56 in Sunday’s opener. I don’t think they’ll get it tonight against the host Phoenix.
NEWS AND NOTES
...
-Under The Radar, Part 1 – Texas Southern picked up a solid win at Northern Kentucky last night in double overtime. The Tigers managed to come back from a 6-point deficit in the final minute of regulation and outlasted a Norse team that had two of their starters foul out of the game in overtime. Texas Southern again reminds us why they will be a threat to win the SWAC this year.
The tournaments really pick up this week, with one of the best getting underway.
