Equally as surprising was the result to the northeast, where Indiana-Purdue-Indianapolis-that’s IUPUI-came back from a 14-point first half deficit to defeat Boston College 76-69. Camron Justice scored 29, and this was the team picked to finish sixth in the 10-team Horizon League topping an ACC squad.

Houston won the battle for the city of Houston, beating Rice 79-68. In another battle of state foes, Wright State topped Toledo 84-74 with Cole Gentry scoring a career-best 30.

Just up the coast from Charleston is the Myrtle Beach Invitational, which also opened Thursday. Winners included Saint Joseph’s-dominant in the second half of an 89-69 blowout of Wake Forest-and Central Florida, which used its size to great advantage in handling Cal State Fullerton 68-52. Western Kentucky turned back Valparaiso 83-71 in a complete ‘ref show’ where it appeared the goal was to call enough touch fouls that both teams might be left with less than five players on the court at the end of the game, and the day ended with West Virginia pulling away in the second half to top Monmouth 71-53.

As is so often the case, William & Mary was involved in one of the most entertaining games of the night, even as the Tribe came up short in a 100-95 overtime loss at Illinois-Chicago. Tarkus Ferguson scored 25 for the Flames, while Matt Milon lit up for 30 for William & Mary

The game between Detroit Mercy and California scheduled for Thursday night was postponed due to effects from the tragic wildfires in northern California. Air quality in Berkeley dropped to unsafe levels, and Cal is reporting that smoke has even infiltrated Haas Pavilion. The teams will try to reschedule but no date is set at this time.
Five in Double Figures Lead CSU to Second Straight Win--csuvikings.comThoughts on Missouri State being 3-0

They’re winning the games they’re supposed to! I wasn’t a huge fan of the Dana Ford hire at the time, but they’ve gotten off to a good start and have done so fairly convincingly. They’re probably still not quite ready to contend in the Valley just yet, but it’s certainly a good start.

Does IUPUI sneak into the mid major top 25?
— Indianapolis Jaguars Fan (@iupuijagsfan) November 15, 2018
Finally something I might actually be somewhat qualified to speak on. As an IUPUI alum and somebody who’s been close to the team the last couple of years, it was great to see them finally break through and get a marquee win against Boston College. I think Jason Gardner is the right guy for the job, and he’s starting to put together a roster that is deep with talent. Making the transition from a conference like the Summit League to the Horizon League can change how you want to build a roster, and I think the Jaguars surprised some people last year with how well they fared in Horizon League play. I think it’s only a matter of time before they’re a consistent contender in the league.
Is Northern Kentucky serious for one final run with Drew McDonald?
— Deshavius (@FatherKiefer) November 15, 2018
It depends on how you define “run”. If you’re wondering if they can make a run to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Horizon League, the answer is yes. The Norse are, at worst, the second best team in the league, and I don’t think anyone (aside from Wright State fans) would put up a huge fight if you considered them the best. If you’re thinking a run of wins in the NCAA Tournament, that might be a bit of a stretch.

Cancun ChallengeWright State vs. North Florida: What to know about Saturday’s game--Dayton Daily News
Field: Bradley, Penn State, Wright State, SMU
Team to watch:
Wright State: A few reasons to watch Wright State here. First, the Raiders beat a really good Toledo team last night and now get a crack at Penn State, who might be a little overrated. Second, Wright State could actually win this tournament. Bradley’s solid, sure, but SMU has already lost to Southern Miss. Third, I was really high on them going into the year and bought a few shares in the Mid-Major Stock Exchange.
