OAKLAND GOLDEN GRIZZLIES

Oakland may be best mid-major team nobody is talking about

Valpo isn't just the trendy pick to win the Horizon League -- it's the trendy pick to be a mid-major that's going to do major damage in the 2016 NCAA Tournament. But what if the Crusaders never get there? That's not as crazy of a statement as many people think. Greg Kampe will welcome four transfers -- Max Hooper (St. John's), Sherron Dorsey-Walker (Iowa State), Percy Gibson (Iowa State), and Martez Walker -- who began their college careers at high-level programs to along with a strong returning nucleus of do-it-all guard Kahlil Felder (18.1 points, 4.6 rebounds, 7.9 assists per game in 2014-15), Jalen Hayes, and Tommie McCune. The Golden Grizzles aren't getting the same type of ink as Valpo heading into the season and that makes perfect sense considering what Bryce Drew's squad accomplished last year. But don't be shocked if this winds up being one of the better mid-major title games see during Championship Week if the Golden Grizzlies and Crusaders square off in the finals of the Horizon League Conference Tournament next March. Oakland will travel to Georgia, Washington, and Virginia before league play while also hooking up with Michigan State for a neutral site game on Dec. 22 at the Palace in Auburn Hills.
