Remember Julie Roe Lach, the NCAA’s former VP of Enforcement who was run out of the organization on a rail after the disastrous investigation of Miami (FL) athletics and the influence of Nevin Shapiro? After a 14-month hiatus doing consulting work, she’s back in college athletics, now as the new Deputy Commissioner of the Horizon League. Her new responsibilities will include oversight of the league’s 19 championships, student-athlete development, finances, corporate sponsorship and branding, all interesting and important aspects of an organization that has little to do with her previous role involving enforcement. Still, her breadth of experience and without question also her ties to the inner workings of the NCAA right down the street from HL offices are attractive qualities, and everyone deserves a second chance to prove their value and integrity. 5. Cleveland State (21-12, 12-4 Horizon League): Experience is a key ingredient to tournament success, and the Vikings have it. Cleveland State returns six of its top seven scorers from a team that won 10 of its last 11 games to close out the regular season, led by guard Bryn Forbes (15.6 ppg). The Horizon League won't be an easy conference to win, but if the Vikings can reach the NCAA tournament, they could make some noise. The Vikings potentially can feature five or six double-figure scorers each night.

Either that, or the team could be facing some serious decisions if players choose to return under max contracts. If Bosh opts out on Sunday, which he is expected to do, then the Heat would have a record $55 million of cap space entering free agency. Other than Bosh, the Heat's only other player currently under contract is backup point guard Norris Cole. James and Cole worked out together on Saturday in Miami, another small sign that the two Ohio natives would be returning to the Heat next season.

Napier: "There's always opportunity to do something great, and no matter if I was going to slide in as a starter or come off the bench, I'm still going to work hard. I'm going to compete. That's who I am.
"My attitude will never change if a head coach was telling me I was going to start right away. It's going to be the same way. I'm going to work as if I'm not on the team. That's what brought me in, and that's what's going to make me as good as I want to be."

So where does Napier fit in with the Heat? That could come down to who he is fitting in with, with incumbent starter Mario Chalmers an impending free agent and Norris Cole mostly a reserve in his first three seasons.
"He's going to compete, just like Norris," Heat President Pat Riley said of Napier. "They're both cut out of the same cloth, from that standpoint, competitive players, highly conditioned. They're cut out of the same cloth.
"Mario is a free agent, so we've got to deal with that. So we'll have some depth at the position."

2013-14 salary: $1.1 million.
2014-15 salary status: $2 million.
What's next: It is possible that on July 1, Cole could be the only player under contract to the Heat for 2014-15. That, of course, doesn't mean the Heat wouldn't have the ability to trade him to create a clean slate, should a major free-agency overhaul be in the team's plans. What Cole has shown is that he is a quality backup. The issue is whether he ever can become more.
For the moment, the only players under contract to the Heat are guard Norris Cole and rookie center Justin Hamilton, whose contact does not become partially guaranteed until Aug. 1.
