News On The Horizon 1/28/2013

So you think you're a mid-major?--ESPN
Don't worry: There are plenty of examples of real mid-majors that don't require the scare quotes: Louisiana Tech is playing top-20 defense as a new C-USA member, and Southern Miss might be even better; Green Bay is shredding the Horizon League; Stephen F. Austin is fighting back the occasional defensive yawn against Southland opponents; and even Harvard, despite last week's loss at Florida Atlantic, looks like a near-lock to scare first-round tournament opponents again this March. These are the easy examples, the teams whose leagues are below the mid-major threshold no matter what threshold you actually apply.

The Heatles: Miami Heat players sing for charity--On The List Blog
Other highlights of the night:

Shane Battier opened with the Backstreet’s Boy’s “I Want It That Way.” He was joined onstage by Greg Oden and a silly Jeong.

The headturner award belongs to James Jones’ solo performance. Complete with props, he belted out Sisqo’s “The Thong Song.” Like a scene out of a Vevo video, Jones, who wore a silver wig, tore off his pants and stripped down to a pair of slinky tights. Earlier in the evening, he got busy onstage with Norris Cole for a rendition of Jay-Z and Justin Timberlakes’ “Holy Grail.” All jokes aside, Jones can sing, and boy, Cole can rap.

Ducks optimistic after Washington trip--The Register-Guard
“It feels good we finally put 40 minutes together,” senior guard Jason Calliste said. “We didn’t just play 20 minutes or 25 or 30.”

Calliste said the Ducks were confident they could get back to the form that helped them start the season with 13 consecutive wins.

“We never lost confidence,” he said. “Guys were mad or whatever, but it’s part of the game. It sucks that it took five losses for us to realize we’ve got to put 40 minutes together instead of 35.”

Calliste led the Ducks with 20 points against WSU on 8-for-10 shooting, including 4-for-6 on three-pointers. He has scored in double digits in four straight games off the bench and averaged 15 points per game during that stretch.

Heat win Finals rematch, top Spurs 113-101--Miami Herald
Michael Beasley scored 12, Norris Cole scored 11 and Ray Allen added 10 for Miami (32-12). Spoelstra said afterward that nothing is set in stone about Wade's status going forward.

"It was just good to have him out there," Spoelstra said.
...
The third quarter decided just about everything. Bosh was 4 for 4 from the field, on the way to a 12-point quarter. Miami outrebounded San Antonio 14-3 in the period, with James and Cole each grabbing one more rebound than the entire Spurs roster did collectively.

"It's a bad combination when we're not disciplined enough defensively and they're making shots," Popovich said. "They shot it really well — came with their 'A' game."
