NCAA Division I outlooks: Valparaiso--The Indy Star

2006-07 record: 16-15 (9-5 Mid-Continent, now called the Summit League).
Indy connections: Brandon McPherson (Lawrence North), Matt Bennett (Brebeuf Jesuit).
What's to like: The Crusaders return 94 percent of their scoring, including their top seven scorers for 19th-year coach Homer Drew. Samuel Haanpaa, a 6-8 guard from Finland (12 ppg) led Valpo in scoring as a freshman last year. Junior Brandon McPherson shot 44.8 percent from 3-point range, second best in the league.
What's not to like: Valpo moves to the Horizon League this year and the competition will get tougher. The Crusaders have at least seven games against NCAA Tournament teams in Butler (twice), Wright State (twice), North Carolina, Vanderbilt and Wisconsin.
