Panthers on the prowl: National analysts probably forgot the location of UW-Milwaukee when Bruce Pearl left for Tennessee after leading the Panthers to the Sweet 16 in 2005.

They may not discover UWM this season, but the work coach Rob Jeter has done since dismissing two key starters for conduct detrimental to the team has been remarkable.

Jeter dismissed senior guard Avery Smith, the team's leading scorer last season, in November. He did the same to senior forward Torre Johnson, who was leading the team in scoring and rebounding after 10 games, in December.

UWM was 3-7 at the time of Johnson's dismissal. The new-look Panthers (12-8, 7-3 Horizon League) has won nine of 11 games. They should be a factor in the race for both the regular-season and tournament titles.

Who saw that coming earlier this season?

No one, which is just another reason we love college basketball.
