PFW women wow

Purdue Fort Wayne women’s basketball equaled a program record with 23 victories (setting a Division I team record) just three seasons after going 1-22.

PFW, in Year 3 under coach Maria Marchesano, reached the semifinals of the Horizon League Tournament for the second consecutive season, then captured the first two postseason tournament victories in Division I program history in its first appearance in the WNIT. That included an 84-58 road drubbing of major-conference foe Cincinnati that advanced the Mastodons to the round of 16 before they fell to eventual tournament champ Saint Louis, 82-78.

“They’re resilient, they made history,” Marchesano said.

Men make mark

The PFW men rebuilt following the loss of program fixtures Jarred Godfrey, Bobby Planutis, Deonte Billups and Ra Kpedi from the 2022-23 team and rolled to a 13-2 start that was a Division I program-best and the team’s best overall since 1992-1993.

The Mastodons eventually won 23 games, the fourth 20-win season in 10 years under coach Jon Coffman, and reached the championship game of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament with road wins over Bowling Green and Tarleton State before falling to host Norfolk State on short rest. It was the first time the Mastodons had won two games in a postseason tournament as a Division I program.

“Our group has been all-in,” Coffman said. “There was no, ‘Hey, I’m ready for the season to be done.’ They just wanted one more, one more, one more and that’s because of leadership. ... This has been an amazing year.”

Fort Wayne native and former Carroll and Northrop star Jalen Jackson was named third-team All-Horizon League after averaging 15.7 points on 49.7% shooting as a sophomore.
