Which mid-major coaches are the next to get hired and win big? College basketball mailbag--The Athletic

Which midmajor coach is most likely to make the jump to a power (six) school and win a national title in the next decade? — Caleb Y.

There were 12 head coach openings at power six schools last spring. Two schools hired head coaches from other power conference schools (Texas, Marquette), one hired a former NBA head coach (Indiana), and five hired or promoted assistants (Arizona, DePaul, Minnesota, North Carolina, Penn State, Texas Tech). That left just four who hired mid-major head coaches: Boston College (Charleston’s Earl Grant), Iowa State (UNLV’s T.J. Oetzelberger), Oklahoma (Loyola Chicago’s Porter Moser) and Utah (Utah State’s Craig Smith). Another school with high-major credentials, Cincinnati, also plucked Wes Miller from UNC Greensboro.

So there aren’t as many opportunities for this kind of promotion as people might think. Caleb has set the bar especially high by asking me to project not only who will get hired but win a national championship in the next decade. (You must be lots of fun at parties, Caleb!) But a mailbag is a mailbag, so here are my choices:

  1. Dennis Gates, Cleveland State. It was surprising that Gates did not get a bigger job last spring (I thought for sure he would end up at DePaul), but he is a Leonard Hamilton disciple, and Hamilton is going to turn 73 in August. Gates could get a high-major job before Hamilton retires, but he’s a potential successor to Hamilton at Florida State someday, which would put Gates in a position to win big right away.
