Horizon: Northern Kentucky

No. 2 Northern Kentucky was dominant from the outset of the Horizon League title game, beating No. 1 Wright State 77-66 and avenging last season's champ-game defeat. This is the second Big Dance appearance in three seasons for the Norse, who are not even a decade into Division I existence. John Brannen is an underrated coach.

D – Drew McDonald

Drew McDonald led the Northern Kentucky Norse throughout the regular season and even more so in the Horizon League Tournament, including a buzzer-beater to win in the semifinals. The senior forward who averaged 19.1 points and 9.5 rebounds per game faces a tough matchup with his 14-seeded Norse team as they take on Texas Tech. If they’re going to come through with a huge upset, McDonald’s efforts will be leading the charge.

14. Northern Kentucky Norse

Opponent: No. 3 Texas Tech

When: Friday in Tulsa, Okla.

Record: 26-8 (13-5 Horizon League)

How they got here: Northern Kentucky and Wright State shared the regular-season championship and split their two matchups, but the Norse won, 77-66, in the winner-take-all conference championship game.

What you need to know: The still relatively young Division I program (it joined in 2012) is making its second NCAA Tournament appearance. It very nearly didn’t happen, as big man Drew McDonald had to knock down a 3 in the final seconds to beat Oakland in the semifinals. The Norse started Horizon play 8-1 before losing ground in the second half of the schedule.

Spotlight on: McDonald’s shot to send NKU to the championship was huge, and it came near the end of what has been a great career for the big man. The 6-8, 250-pound McDonald is averaging 19.1 points, 9.5 rebounds and 2.9 assists a night and has averaged double-digit scoring in each of his four seasons.
