Friday's Pregame Beat: Previewing your college hoops weekend--Ballin' is a Habit

Five more mid-major matchups to watch

Sat. 2:00 pm: Valparaiso @ Butler: So will Butler end up being Butler again this season? They certainly have the talent to do so, but the Bulldogs still have a long way to go before they reach the level that they have been at the past two seasons. Valpo may be without Brandon Wood this year, but the Crusaders are 5-2 and have beaten Akron and Duquesne already this year.

Sat. 2:00 pm: Cleveland State @ Detroit: Detroit was thought to be the team that would be a favorite to win the Horizon in the preseason, but the Titans aren't much more than Ray McCallum this season, and he isn't good enough to carry this program. Cleveland State is a physical defense team that has some offensive pieces that were overshadowed by Norris Cole last year.

VALPARAISO AT BUTLER (2 p.m. Saturday at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Indiana)

Horizon League play gets underway this weekend with the latest installment of the I-65 series (actually part of I-94 through northwest Indiana is included, but you get the idea), and this should be a good contest to open up. Valparaiso (5-2) rode a five-game winning streak before being hammered 80-47 by Ohio State. Beware of Kevin VanWijk , who has a 14.8 scoring average and a shooting mark of 63.8 percent, and Ryan Broekhoff nearly has a double-double average of 14.3 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. Butler (4-3) would like nothing more than to win this game with a tough test ahead against Xavier four days afterward. Chrishawn Hopkins leads the way at 12.9 points per game.

The NC-Double-Eh Schedule - Dec. 1--Raptors HQ

7:00pm Youngstown State @ Detroit – I have a feeling this could be a big game for Detroit’s Jason Calliste. He’s been solid all year and with the continued absence of Eli Holman, he’s going to be needed to contribute.
...
And here is where the ladies are playing today …
...
7:00pm Detroit @ Ball State – Yar Shayok (wo)man’s the middle for Detroit and with the emergence of two freshmen players, she’ll be needed to anchor the middle on defense more so now. She’s currently sitting 6th all time on the school’s rebounding list so expect the glass to be clean tonight.

College hoops roundup--The Detroit Free Press

Youngstown State 64, Detroit Mercy 61

DuShawn Brooks scored 24 points and made two key three-pointers in the final 1:55 to lead Youngstown State to a 64-61 victory against Detroit tonight at Calihan Hall.

Brooks’ first shot behind the arc put the Penguins (5-1, 1-0 Horizon League) down by one point. With 1:05 to play, he hit another three-pointer to give them a 61-59 lead, and Kendrick Perry protected the cushion with three free throws in the last 17 seconds.

Brooks had six three-pointers on the night. Perry scored 13 points for Youngstown State, which broke a five-game losing streak against the Titans and is off to its best start since the 2000-01 season.

Chase Simon and Ray McCollum scored 21 points apiece for Detroit (3-5, 0-1). McCallum had 10 rebounds.

And here is where the ladies are playing …
...
8:00pm Marquette @ Green Bay – Here is another big game on the women’s side – a battle of Wisconsin. Katherine Plouffe had been playing very well for Marquette and had a 16 point, 14 rebound, 4 assist, 3 steal game against New Orleans three nights ago. She’s the team’s leading scorer and rebounder right now also. For Green Bay, freshman Megan Lukan is averaging 2.6 points and 3 boards in an efficient 13 minutes a game so she should see some action here.
