Recapping the Horizon League: Dec. 8-14--Mid-Major Madness
Horizon League watch guide for Dec. 15-21--Mid-Major Madness
Week 7 Watchlist: Strange Geometry--Basket Under Review

Tuesday, December 16

C Games

#119 Miami (OH) at #141 Wright State (-1), 7 PM ET, ESPN+. Miami Not That Miami: 10-0 and just one win away (okay, they also have a non-D1 later on) from a perfect non-conference run. It's almost like Travis Steele isn't actually a bad coach, folks. This will still be a pretty tough task, but Wright State is actually sub-50% ATS as a home team post-COVID.

Wednesday, December 17

C Games

#149 Oakland (-1) at #195 Northern Kentucky, 7 PM ET, ESPN+. Early Horizon League battle amongst two of the six or so best teams in a flat conference. Also two AWFUL defenses, so tune in if you like points.

#164 Youngstown State at #176 Robert Morris (-2), 7 PM ET, ESPN+. Same as above but with much better defenses. Robert Morris may have the widest FT Rate split I'm aware of, as opponents attempt double the free throws of their offense.

Friday, December 19

C Games

#175 South Dakota State (-2) vs. #241 Milwaukee, 5 PM ET, BTN+. I cannot figure out why this is on BTN+. It's the pre-cursor to the Wisconsin/Villanova game, which is on FOX...but neither of these teams are in the Big Ten. I'm guessing that since the latter is a FOX product they're having to use this as one, too, but I thought that's what FS2 was for? Who knows.

One more reminder, I urge you to check out the incredible (and free) Weekend Watchlist for notes on the few “high profile” games on today’s slate.

  • Feels like it’s been awhile since I’ve discussed my hometown Indiana State Sycamores, but even under the direction of known 3PT avoider Mark Slessinger, the Trees are still very much a rim and 3 oriented offense .... This hasn’t been a typical rim dominant/offensive rebounding Bart Lundy offense at Milwaukee this season ...
  • One league on the slate today with Detroit visiting PFW....

UConn headlines a light Friday of College Basketball--Busting Brackets

The Thursday slate of games wasn’t incredible, but there were two results I want to talk about.  Green Bay, coached by podcast host Doug Gottlieb, finally got its first Horizon League win this season.  As much as I hate to admit this, Coach Gottlieb has built a competitive roster in the Horizon League.  CJ O’ Hara and Preston Reudinger have been huge reasons for the resurgence of the Green Bay program.

Week 6 Weekend Watchlist--Basket Under Review

Saturday, December 13

C Games

#154 Toledo at #179 Robert Morris (-1), 1 PM ET, ESPN+.

There aren’t many teams with as radical of a differential between their efficiency on each end of the floor than Toledo. Tod Kowalczyk’s teams have always leaned more towards the offensive side, but it has reached a fever pitch over the last three seasons. Including this year, his teams have averaged ranking ~63rd in adjusted offense and ~304th in adjusted defense. For this year, in particular, the Rockets rely heavily on their starting lineup; they are one of only six teams in the country with five players at over 50% of minutes played while recording usage rates over 19% in Division I games.

On the flip side, Robert Morris has been the epitome of balance, rating 187th in offense and 183rd in defense. The Colonials also have distinct areas in which they have thrived and struggled. On the plus side, they are excellent on the offensive glass, plus rate in the upper half of the country in 2P% and 3P% on both ends of the floor. On the downside, they both turn the ball over and don’t force turnovers, as well as rank sub-350th in FTA/FGA offense and defense. For the season, opponents are making 9.3 more free throws per game.

Thankfully for Robert Morris, the free-throw game might not decide this one. Toledo already doesn’t send teams to the line (5th in FTA/FGA allowed), and it isn’t great at drawing fouls (287th), either. A key for RMU will be slowing down Toledo’s transition attack. The Rockets attempt 21.3% of shots in transition in their wins, as opposed to 16.9% in losses.

On the other end, Toledo will look to limit RMU’s offensive rebounding. The Rockets have struggled to get initial stops this season, and allowing second-chances when they do are killers. Toledo is 0-3 when allowing an OR% over 35% this season, while RMU has reached that mark in eight of 11 games. - Lukas Harkins

YSU announces Hall of Fame class

YOUNGSTOWN — The Youngstown State will induct a class of five former student-athletes and a long-time contributor into the YSU Athletics Hall of Fame in February.

The class of 2025 features Marta Burak (women’s tennis), Danielle Curry (women’s track and field), Dr. Ray Duffett (contributor), Phil Klein (baseball), Eric Rupe (men’s cross country and track and field), and Heidi Schlegel (women’s basketball).

She ranks fourth on the all-time scoring list with 1,729 points, and her 621 points in 2013-14 rank fifth on the single-season chart, while her 584 in 2014-15 is eighth. Schlegel’s 20.0 ppg average in 2013-14 ranks eighth in a single season. Her 14.5 career-scoring average ranks 10th all-time, she ranks eighth all-time with 796 career rebounds and seventh all-time with 25 double-doubles.

Brody Robinson - Oakland

Everyone’s favorite mid-major head coach in Greg Kampe has yet another incredible scoring guard on his hands with the arrival of Robinson from UT Arlington this past offseason. Robinson struggled for a consistent role in two previous stops at the Division-I level but in a new spot with Kampe, looks like he could be a star in the Horizon League.

Robinson has Oakland in the midst of a four-game win streak after dropping 27 points and producing eight assists to help the Golden Grizzlies beat Purdue Fort Wayne, 101-92. Three days later, he followed that performance up with 19 points, nine assists and three steals to help stave off Toledo, 98-97.

Teams of the Week Awards: Cyclone Season Rocks West Lafayette--Basket Under Review

HONORABLE MENTION: REMAINING CONFERENCE AWARDS

HORIZON LEAGUE: DETROIT MERCY - A 2-0 start for the Titans? Preposterous! Incredible effort last week by this group to get the job done over tricky IU Indy, and then a double-digit road win at Cleveland State. TJ Nadeau overcame a tough league opener to become the star of the show in Cleveland - 26 points on just 14 shot attempts. And Ayden Carter was the go to guy vs. the Jags, scoring 21 and snatching three steals. Lets see if these Titans can make it 3-0 this Sunday at Purdue Fort Wayne.

Ayden Carter and the Detroit Mercy Titans came prepared for Horizon League play and became the story of the league last week going 2-0.
