Youngstown State Not Rewarded For Upsetting Georgia. Thanks to predetermined rules that set in stone the semifinal teams of the Legends Classic, Youngstown State cannot advance to the Brooklyn-based semifinal despite knocking off Georgia 68-56 in a game that saw the Bulldogs score just 14 points by halftime and shoot just over 32 percent from the field. The only reason Georgia kept the deficit within a respectable margin was Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, who finished 10-of-18 from the field for 27 points and six rebounds. The Penguins are steadily improving under head coach Jerry Slocum and are more than capable of competing at the top half of the Horizon League in 2012-13. That said, even for a team as flawed and preponderantly-reliant on one player as Georgia is Caldwell-Pope, this counts as a bad loss, and a major stain on the early non-conference ledger. The Bulldogs clearly have some work to do before they get into SEC play.

You can play bridge with your Grandmother, just make sure you have the game on in the back ground:
...
Detroit at St. John’s: It’s unclear whether or not St. John’s will have a pair of still-ineligible JuCo transfers this season, and without them they could be in trouble. Detroit is led by the talented-Ray McCallum Jr.
Cleveland State/Bowling Green at No. 5 Michigan: Michigan should be able to knock off either of these teams, but the Wolverines have been labeled as overrated by most of the computer rankings. This will be their first game against a Division I opponent.
You know what? Go ahead. Get some sleep. I ain’t even mad:
...
Northern Illinois at Valparaiso: Valpo is the favorite in the Horizon this year.

1. South Carolina 82, Milwaukee 75 (OT)
The first win of the Frank Martin era in Columbia was a tough one, as the Gamecocks needed two free throws from Mindaugas Kacinas to send the game into overtime. Brenton Williams scored 12 of his 14 points in the extra session and freshman Michael Carrera went for 17 points and 15 rebounds to lead South Carolina past the Panthers.

7. Sunday was a great day for new coaches. Tim Miles opened his Nebraska career with an 11-point win over Southern and Danny Manning got things rolling at Tulsa with a 110-54 victory over LSU Shreveport. South Carolina rallied from a 15-point deficit to defeat Milwaukee in overtime, giving Frank Martin a dubya in his first game as a Gamecock. Larry Brown’s SMU debut saw all five starters score in double figures in a 73-58 victory over Loyola Marymount. Sports Illustrated’s Andy Glockner joked on Twitter that, after the game, Brown resigned and contacted the Los Angeles Lakers about their once vacant head coaching position.

7. How will Valparaiso perform against Northern Illinois with a healthy Kevin Van Wijk? There were a lot of questions about Valparaiso’s prospects after the standout underwent offseason knee surgery. But his performance against Georgia Southern (16 points) in his team’s season opener suggested that he’s healthier than most realized. That’s clearly a good sign for a Crusaders squad that needs to build momentum -- and give Van Wijk more reps so he can continue to work on his postsurgery mobility -- prior to the start of Horizon League play.

8. Detroit at St. John's, Tuesday
Detroit came within six points of an upset against St. John's last season, but they're not as good as they were with Eli Holman, LaMarcus Lowe and Chase Simon gone. Steve Lavin is without God'sgift Achiuwa but he has everyone else back and the Red Storm will be competitive in the Big East. They were picked 10th in their preseason poll.
Pomeroy gives Detroit a 27 percent shot.
...
10. Milwaukee at South Carolina, Sunday
The Horizon League's Milwaukee nearly lost to Division-II Parkside in an exhibition last week after their starting shooting guard went down with a hand injury to his non-shooting hand, so this one became a lot more unlikely. Even so, the Gamecocks return two starters to their 10-win team and won't be as solid in the frontcourt.
Pomeroy gives Milwaukee a 28 percent chance.

Miami Heat opens road trip with tough win vs. Hawks--
Miami Herald
The Heat led 72-71 after the third quarter but used a 10-2 run to begin the fourth quarter. Bosh anchored the Heat’s starting lineup to begin the final period with Norris Cole, Allen, Haslem and Rashard Lewis providing support.
“They did a great job,” James said. “They raised the lead for us and we needed every bucket. Tonight was one of those division games, one of those hand-to-hand combat games, and it’s always good to get a win on the road.”

Having to buy time, Spoelstra, with his team up one, opened the fourth quarter with Chris Bosh, Udonis Haslem, Rashard Lewis, Ray Allen and Norris Cole on the court. That group pushed the Heat to a nine-point lead.
Each had their moments, foremost Bosh, who finished with 24 points on 7-of-13 shooting from the field and 10-of-10 perfection from the line, his 19-foot jumper with 2:04 to play giving the Heat an 89-87 lead.
"There had to be some pick up for the offense," Bosh said of playing in Wade's absence, "and I wanted to make sure to do my part."

Of players with at least 350 shots, the NBA's worst two-point percentages last season belonged to Charlotte Bobcats guard Kemba Walker, .393; Indiana Pacers forward Tyler Hansbrough, .409; Heat guard Norris Cole, .414; and the Heat's Udonis Haslem, .423.

Some ‘under the radar’ individual battles to keep tabs on tonight--
CollegeBasketballTalk
Eric Ferguson (Georgia Southern) vs. Ryan Broekhoff (Valparaiso)
While Broekhoff (reigning Horizon League POY) had the better perimeter shooting and rebounding numbers of the two last season, Ferguson’s been hard at work to improve his ball-handling and perimeter skill set during the offseason. Valparaiso will once again be one of the favorites in the Horizon, but if Georgia Southern is to reach the point of contending with Davidson and Charleston it will be Ferguson who leads the way.

Im currently a sophomore at Oakland and appreciate your hard work, your an awesome coach. With a few teams leaving the Summit and so much moving around in conferences in the NCAA today, do you see a time when we aren't in the Summit anymore and possibly swith conferences?

How likely is a move to the Horizon League?
by Bill 12:04 PM
I think you hit it on the head that it is an unstable time for conference affiliations. The Summit League has been very good to OU, and is rapidly becoming a top 20 men's basketball conference. We will always do what's best for Oakland, and we have to be proactive to keep up with the changing landscape.
