No. 11 Butler holds off Davidson's challenge 73-62--
MICentralSports.comAfter the Buzzer: Man Oh Manny!--

#10 Butler 73, Davidson 62. For about three-quarters of today’s game at Hinkle Fieldhouse, you might have suspected that Stephen Curry was still running the show at Davidson. The reason: despite losing more than half of its scoring output from last year, the visiting Wildcats led the highest-ranked Butler team in the preseason (#10) well into the second half before finally succumbing to the superior talent of Gordon Hayward, Matt Howard and Willie Veasley. At the 9:39 mark in the second half, Davidson’s Brendan McKillop hit a three to give the Cats a 58-56 lead. At that point, and for the first time all day, it seemed as if the Butler defense finally started getting to the Davidson players, and as a result, the Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run over the next seven minutes (classic Butler “run”) to put the game away. Hayward came on strong in the second half to end with 17/8, while Willie Veasley added 15/3. Matt Howard and Shelvin Mack had quiet games, going for 10/4 rebs and 7/4 assts, respectively, but the entire Butler team looked out of sync for most of the first half of this game. On the other side and typical of most Bob McKillop teams, Davidson played hard, generally shot the ball well (47% for the game), and rarely seemed to get rattled in the difficult environs of Butler’s home arena. Well worth the price of admission for the packed house today, the fans were treated to a couple of hours of intense basketball from two teams who aren’t very familiar with the meaning of the word half-assed. Once Butler gets situated to the new season, the Bulldogs will certainly be a force to be reckoned with on the national level, and for those in the SoCon who are assuming that Davidson will simply fade away now that Curry is playing for the Warriors, they should definitely think again — the Wildcats will once again be in the thick of the SoCon race.
Sunday's Shootaround--
Ballin' is a Habit
Butler 73, Davidson 62: For a little more than 30 minutes in this game, Butler looked out of sync. Davidson was getting open shots, and hitting them, while the Bulldogs struggled offensively and defensively. With 9:39 left in the game, a Brendan McKillop three put Davidson ahead 58-56, but from that point on Butler really took control. They went on a 12-0 run over the next seven minutes, and outscored the Wildcats 15-4 to end the game. Gordon Hayward played well down the stretch, finishing with 17 points and 8 boards, while Willie Veasley had an impressive game as well, going for 15. Matt Howard (10 points, 4 boards, and just 2-4 from the field) and Shelvin Mack (7 points, 4 assists, 2-8 from the field) both were off yesterday, and as a whole Butler just didn't look like Butler.
Until the last 9:39 of the game. That's when their defense really picked up, they started hitting shots, and looked like a team deserving of a top 10 ranking. While Davidson proved to be a gutty team and may have outplayed the Bulldogs last night, at some point talent is going to win out.

A lot of people are doubting the Tar Heels right now, but a relatively light early season schedule will help the freshman get comfortable playing at this level. Hopefully, these guys will develop sooner rather than later.

Washington 74, Wright State 69: This game wasn't as close as the final score indicated, as the outcome was not in doubt for the last 30 minutes of the game. A big reason for that is the performace of Isaiah Thomas, who scored 30 points last night. Of note - freshman Abdul Gaddy came off the bench for the Huskies, scoring 5 points with just 1 assists and 2 turnovers. Venoy Overton started in his stead.
...
Xavier 83, Youngstown State 57: Jordan Crawford led five players in double figures with 14 points as the Musketeers jumped out to a 24-8 lead. Is Xavier's balance back?

Davidson at #10 Butler at 2 PM on WHMB-40: Yeah. Local television again, but once again we have come through for you with yet another RTC Live from historic Hinkle Fieldhouse (the site of Milan’s famous 1954 win over Muncie and where they filmed Hoosiers–anybo are dy got the odds that Bill Simmons has ever travelled there since he references the movie so often?). Of course, we have a funny feeling that if Stephen Curry were still in a Wildcat uniform ESPN might have found a way to get them on one of their networks. Instead this game will give us a look at Butler, everyone’s top mid-major team and one of the highest ranked mid-majors that I can remember in recent years. Butler coach Brad Stevens managed to lead the Bulldogs to 26-6 record last year despite starting three freshmen in every game, a remarkable feat for the 2nd year coach who has more wins (56) in his first two years than any coach in D1 history other than Bill Guthridge (58). This year, Stevens will have significantly higher expectations for his Bulldogs who are led by sophomore Gordon Hayward (13.1 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 2.0 APG, and 1.5 SPG) and junior Matt Howard (14.8 PPG, 6.8 RPG, 1.1 APG, 0.7 SPG). On the other side of the ball, Davidson coach Bob McKillop will have his hands full trying to manage an inexperienced and Curry-less group in a hostile environment. In addition to losing Curry and his nation-leading 28.6 PPG, the Wildcats also lost Andrew Lovedale (a solid inside presence who provided both points and rebounds) and Max Paulhus-Gosselin (an excellent defender who to the best of my knowledge is not related to Jon, Kate, or any of the 8). This year, McKillop will be relying on Will Archambault (8.3 PPG and 4.3 RPG), Bryant Barr (7.1 PPG and 2.0 RPG), and Stephen Rossiter (6.1 PPG and 5.9 RPG). Unfortunately, the Wildcats strength is on the inside where Hayward and Howard will be dominating. The Bulldogs relative weakness is on the outside where Curry could have done some major damage, but he’s hanging out with Nellie now so expect the Bulldogs to be out to send a message to the rest of the nation that they deserving of this extremely high ranking.

2 pm: Davidson @ Butler: This game would be a lot more intriguing if Steph Curry hadn't gone to the NBA. Despite Bob McKillop's coaching prowess, it is difficult to imagine the Wildcats hanging with Shelvin Mack, Gordon Hayward, Matt Howard, and the rest of the Bulldogs. But with guys like Ben Allison, Will Archambault, and Bryant Barr returning, Davidson may surprise some people this season.

#13 Washington 74, Wright State 69. Abdul Gaddy didn’t get the start tonight, and in fact only earned fifteen minutes, during which he put up 5 pts on 1-4 shooting. Isaiah Thomas was pretty much a one-man show for the Huskies, scoring 30 pts on a variety of moves. But UW got virtually nothing from its inside players, and we fear this is going to be a major problem for them all season.

Ballin' is a Habit
Name: 76 Classic
Date: Nov. 26-29 (Anaheim, CA)
Teams: West Virginia, Butler, Clemson, Texas A&M, UCLA, Minnesota, Long Beach State, Portland
Breakdown: Butler is loaded this season, but with West Virginia, Minnesota, and Clemson in this field, this field is wide open. Minnesota and Butler in the first round should be a classic, but Clemson and Texas A&M is also a great match-up. The match-up everyone is hoping for is to see West Virginia and Butler take on each other in the finals, but with the depth of this tournament, don't be surprised to see one of these two teams go down early.
BIAH's Pick: We don't expect that too happen, and our guess is that the Mountaineers take down the Bulldogs in the final as Devin Ebanks gives Gordon Hayward fits with his length.

Thursday's Shootaround: UNC rolls, Syracuse's defense dominates, and Cal's three point shooting comes alive--
Ballin' is a Habit
Cal 95, Detroit 61: The Bears looked much more impressive last night against Detroit than they did in their opener against Murray State, but there is still a lot that Monty's group needs to work on.
Detroit had this down to a four point game early in the second half, but that is when the Bears finally found their range. Patrick Christopher and Theo Robertson, inparticular, both knocked down a couple threes as Cal used an 11-0 run to open up a 17 point lead and start to pull away. The Bears showed a killer instinct they didn't have on Monday, when they opened up an 18 point lead only to let the Racers back in it.
My biggest issue right now is with Jerome Randle. Yes, he is averaging 20 ppg right now, but he hasn't looked as dominant as he did last season. The biggest issue in my eyes is his inability to effectively use the high ball screen. Randle is not quick in the same way that Ty Lawson is - what Randle excels at is his stop and go quickness. He is deadly when he can get up a head of steam, because he can stop on a dime and hit a pull-up with three point range. Take note, Pac 10 teams. Both Murray State and Detroit crowded and pressured Randle out by half court, which has forced him to be more of a penetrator. Sure, he is able to draw fouls against this level of competition, but will he be able to get by an Isaiah Thomas or a Malcolm Lee in league play?
The other issue I noticed was how poor he is at setting up ball screens. Markhuri Sanders-Frison and Jamal Boykin are both big bodies. Given Randle's ability to shoot the three, a defender is not going to be able to go under those ball screens. But Randle has not really been able to turn the corner off the screen and get into the paint as well as I expected him too. When he did last night (I remember two times specifically), both ended up with open looks for shooters on the wings.

Where: Bramlage Coliseum, Manhattan, Kan.
When: 7 p.m. CT
TV: Fox Sports Kansas City, ESPN360.com
Records: Loyola 0-0, Kansas State 0-0
Game Notes: Loyola, Kansas State
Summary: Kansas State is Loyola's most difficult game of the non-conference season by a wide margin. The Wildcats are expected to be in the running for an NCAA Tournament berth behind Denis Clemente (15.0 ppg) and Jacob Pullen (13.9 ppg, 3.7 apg). Connecticut transfer Curtis Kelly and 7'0" freshman Jordan Henriquez-Roberts just give K-State two more players to attack Big 12 opponents. Jordan Hicks is out of this game, according to the Loyola athletics department, so the scoring burden once again falls on the shoulders of freshman forward Ben Averkamp and senior forward Andy Polka.

Skinny: The youthful Ramblers, who'll trot out four starters with little or no Division I experience, jump into the deep end against a K-State team that's "Also Receiving Votes" in the Top 25 preseason polls. The Wildcats retain four starters from a 22-win team that went to the NIT's second round. Junior guard Jacob Pullen (13.9 ppg), a Proviso East grad, is the team's No. 2 returning scorer. K-State also unveils a terrific freshman class that features McDonald's All-American Wally Judge. The upside for Loyola? It gets a return game from Kansas State next year.

No. 13 California tops Detroit 95-61, moves to 2-0--
MICentralSports.comAfter the Buzzer: Blowout Wednesday in the CvC--
Rush The Court
Cal Shakes off Detroit in Second Half. California 95, Detroit 61. Cal’s big three of Jerome Randle, Patrick Christopher and Theo Robertson outscored Detroit by themselves (62 pts on 17-32 FG, 7-14 3FG and 21-22 FT), using a strong second-half surge to put away the pesky Titans from Detroit tonight. It was clear after Monday night’s game that Randle was not pleased with his play, and tonight he started off quickly with 16 first half points to lead Cal until his teammates (most notably Christopher and Robertson) heated up. Cal’s defensive energy was significantly better than Monday night, holding Detroit to 35.7% shooting for the game, although often the Titans forced up bad shots making it easy for the Bear defense. And despite actually being smaller that the Titans inside the paint for much of the game, Cal dominated the boards (41-25). Our observation is that Detroit had some talent on the floor, especially the raw but capable Eli Holman (the IU transfer who threw a potted plant at or near Tom Crean 2 years ago), but it’s clear that the players haven’t quite figured out how to play together yet. As for Cal, it’ll be very interesting to see how they handle the trip to New York and the long Syracuse zone defense. You’d initially think that a great three-point shooting team would have an advantage against a zone, but it’s doubtful the Bears have seen such an athletic zone before.

The Titans could have difficulty matching up against bigger teams.

12. Horizon: Butler might carry this conference even higher in the rankings. The Bulldogs play a national schedule and should be a top 15-20 team throughout the season. Wright State has a real shot to split with Butler and earn a bid with a conference tournament title. The strength of this league goes beyond these two with a new pesky team in Cleveland State (just ask Wake Forest).

11 pm: Detroit @ Cal: The Cal Bears looked almost disinterested playing their season opener against Murray State. Hyped as a potential Pac 10 champion, the Bears struggled to put the Racers away late in the game. Cal needs to figure out how to play as a favorite. As underdogs last season, they were playing with house money while winning games. As a favorite, could they get lackadaisical, buying into their own hype? The biggest question that needs to be answered is how Jerome Randle and Patrick Christopher will play as the focus of opposing defenses. MSU did a pretty good job hedging the high ball screen Cal likes to run, slowing down Randle in the process. Hopefully the little guy will get on track, as he is one of the most fun players to watch.
