Full Breakdown Of The Top November Tournaments--Rush the Court

2K Sports Classic Benefiting Coaches vs. Cancer (Regionals: November 9-11, NYC: November 19-20)

The Field: The powers-that-be decided to avoid any clunker matchups at MSG in mid-November, so they’ve given the four hosts — North Carolina, California, Ohio State and Syracuse – an automatic pass to the semifinals in NYC, so don’t expect any Gardner-Webb Cinderella stories invading the Big Apple. The tournament kicks off Monday and Wednesday at all four sites with Syracuse battling Albany and Robert Morris, California taking on Murray State and Detroit, North Carolina facing Florida International and North Carolina Central and Ohio State matched up against Alcorn State and James Madison. The semifinal games are set for November 19 with Syracuse vs. California as the under-card and North Carolina vs. Ohio State in the nightcap.
...
76 Classic (November 26-27, 29)

The Field: Does West Virginia have the goods to win the Big East? We’ll get our first look at the Mountaineers when they take on Big West favorite Long Beach State. The second game pits Texas A&M against Clemson in what could be a crucial bubble contest we look back on in February and March with great importance. The best first-round matchup is Butler vs. Minnesota. The top-ten Bulldogs could receive a stiff test from Minnesota and their deep, talented squad. UCLA faces Portland in what is a very dangerous game for the Bruins.
...
The Pick: West Virginia could take on Butler in what would be the best tournament final of any featured this November. This would be a matchup of two rugged, fundamentally sound teams that crash the boards and work hard on every possession. West Virginia can edge Butler athletically, though, with the slower Gordon Hayward attempting to contain Devin Ebanks and Da’Sean Butler raining threes outside. If the Mountaineers can get Joe Mazzulla playing like he did two years ago in March, they could take the Big East crown and should have enough ammunition to win this tournament.

RTC Conference Primers: #1 – Big Ten--Rush The Court

Top 10 RPI Boosters.

Everyone vs. Butler. The Bulldogs figure to be a top 20 team this year, and they play three Big Ten teams in the non-conference. Should be an excellent litmus test.

* Nov. 18, 2009 – Butler @ Northwestern
* Nov. 26, 2009 - Minnesota vs. Butler (in Anaheim)
* Dec. 12, 2009 – Ohio St. @ Butler

That’s Debatable: What Excites Us About the 2009-10 Season--Rush the Court

While college basketball has a tournament that college football fans can only dream about that gives the little guy a chance it seems like the talk of the rise of the mid-major has been premature. In the past five years only one mid-major (outside of Memphis) that was feared coming into March has advanced to the Elite 8 (#3 seed Xavier in 2008). While Gonzaga (all hype in March since Casey Cavalry’s sophomore season) and George Mason (one fluky run) are nice I am looking for something more substantial. Right now the top candidates are Butler, Dayton and Siena. I’ll be watching to see if someone steps up.

Which teams will play for the NCAA basketball title?--The Chicago Tribune

Texas, Butler can go deep

David Teel, Newport News Daily Press

Since picking chalk is about as much fun as tasting chalk, let's forgo a Kansas-Michigan State final and delve deeper into the pool of contenders for Texas and Butler.

The Longhorns have earned 11 consecutive NCAA tournament invites under Rick Barnes, among the best active coaches without a national title, and return wing Damion James to complement point guard Jai Lucas, a transfer from Florida.

Headlined by guard Shelvin Mack and forward Matt Howard, the Bulldogs have everyone back from the team that extended LSU to the limit in last year's first round.

A Final Four run would take Butler back home again to Indianapolis.

Cooler Than You: Some Of The Best Of College Basketball--Rush The Court

The All-Jeff Fryer Team

This list of the best long-range bombers is named after the legendary (in our minds) Loyola Marymount guard who still holds the record for most three-pointers made in an NCAA Tournament game, an incredible 11 against Michigan in 1990’s second round. If you can catch that game on ESPN Classic, it is something to behold. You have to be a little nuts to be a bomber; you have to forget your last miss like it never happened and be willing to keep firing even when they just won’t fall (our editors are familiar with this feeling). Here’s our ranking of 25 of this season’s best:
...
14. Gordon Hayward, Butler
15. Troy Cotton, Wisconsin-Green Bay

Preseason Conference Media/Coaches Polls--Ballin' is a Habit

Horizon League Media Poll - Butler (43), Cleveland State (2), Wright State (1)
First off, I want to know what the person was smoking who picked Wright State over Butler. That's like the one guy who didn't vote for Cal Ripken Jr. on the Hall of Fame ballot. (Yes, I'm an Orioles fan. No, don't make fun of me, I already feel bad enough about it.) Nonetheless, this is Butler's league to win. Cleveland State is a good team ( they beat Syracuse and Wake Forest last year) and could possibly sneak up and win the conference tournament, but they don't have the horses to run with Butler during the season. Shelvin Mack, Gordon Hayward and Matt Howard aren't just the best trio in the conference; they could be the best trio in the entire country too.

2009-2010 College Basketball Season Preview: Small Forwards--Ballin' is a Habit

2. Gordon Hayward, Butler: Just a sophomore, Hayward doesn't get the recognition he deserves nationally as he is a huge reason the Butler Bulldogs will be in and around the top ten this season. Hayward's game starts with his jump shot, which is as pure as it gets. Standing 6'8", there aren't many people that Hayward can't shoot over. He also proved to be adept at slashing to the basket last season. Not blessed with greeat athleticism, Hayward is able to penetrate from perimeter due to his craftiness - he knows how to get a defender off balance using an array of fakes, jabs, and hesitation moves.

2009-2010 College Basketball Season Preview: Power Forwards--Ballin' is a Habit

10. Matt Howard, Butler: Howard is a guy that doesn't get a lot of press playing for Butler. But make no mistake, Howard is as good as any four in the country. Howard is what you might refer to as a land warrior - he isn't going to outquick or outjump anyone in the country, but he is so strong. An excellent rebounder with a solid back to the basket game, Howard's strength offensively is his ability to seal and hold position in the post. He is the rock for a talented Butler team.

2009-2010 College Basketball Season Preview: Point Guards--Ballin' is a Habit

Top 10:
...
* 9. Shelvin Mack, Butler: Mack is one of the more underrated point guards in the country. Playing on a team with Gordon Hayward and Matt Howard in the Horizon League will do that to you. But don't doubt his ability. Mack is an effective scorer, capable of carrying the Bulldogs if Hayward and/or Howard happen to be struggling. A big, strong kid (6'3", 215 lb), Mack is an excellent defender and a good rebounder from the guard spot. He needs to improve on his quickness getting into the lane, as well as add some consistency to his perimeter jumper, but the bottom-line is that Mack is the guy that runs the shows for Butler, who most believe will be a top 10 or 15 team this season.
