BtB 2009-10 Horizon League Preview--Blogging the Bracket
Kansas overwhelming No. 1 in AP preseason

Butler was 11th in the poll followed by Connecticut, California, Washington, Michigan, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Mississippi State, Louisville and Georgetown. The last five ranked teams were Dayton, Georgia Tech, Illinois, Clemson and Minnesota.

Preseason Polls Released Today--Rush The Court

# Nice to see Butler getting nearly top-ten love as the best mid, but they’re going to have to earn that ranking very early in their schedule, with games at Northwestern, at Evansville, vs. Ohio St. and Xavier at home, plus neutral site games in the loaded 76 Classic in Anaheim and against Georgetown in MSG.
# Conference Breakdown (Coaches, AP): ACC (4, 4), A10 (1, 1), Big East (6, 5), Big 12 (3, 3), Big 10 (5, 6), Horizon (1, 1), Pac-10 (2, 2), SEC (3, 3).

9. Dec. 12th - Butler @ Ohio State: I love this Butler team, but Ohio State is going to be better than some people expect. Seeing Gordon Hayward and Evan Turner go at each other is going to be a pleasure to watch, but the key to this game is going to be who wins the Matt Howard-Dallas Lauderdale (assuming he is healthy) match-up down low.
12. Nov. 26th - Butler vs. Minnesota (at the 76 Classic in Anaheim): In what is probably the best guaranteed match-up in the pre-season tournaments, the Bulldogs take on an underrated Golden Gophers team.
27. Dec. 8th - Georgetown vs. Butler in MSG (Jimmy V)
38. Dec. 19th - Xavier at Butler

2009-2010 College Basketball Season Preview: Overlooked Stars--Ballin' is a Habit

Matt Howard, Gordon Hayward, and Shelvin Mack, Butler: Sure, you may know that Butler is all over pre-season top 10 lists. But can you name their three stars? Howard is a 6'8" horse on the block that is as good in the low post as anyone in the country. Hayward is a lights out shooter, but as a 6'8" wing with less-than-ideal athleticism, he thrives on a wide variety of shot-fakes, jab steps, and crafty dribble moves. Mack is a tough point guard that defends and rebounds well, but also showed the ability to be a big time scorer for the Bulldogs. These three guys should be household names by February.

RTC 2009-10 Top 65 Games: November/December--Rush The Court

December 8- Georgetown vs. Butler in NYC (#49 overall)- The Hoyas are looking to reclaim their mojo back after last year’s collapse. Their stiffest test in non-conference play should come from Butler, a squad that returns their entire roster from a 26-win season. Matt Howard banging down low with Greg Monroe is definitely one to watch on this grand stage.
December 12- Ohio State at Butler (#41 overall)- Looking for a great one-on-one battle to watch in non-conference play? How about possible Big Ten POY Evan Turner matching up with Butler’s Gordon Hayward? Both of these multi-dimensional wings can score, rebound, dish and lead their respective teams. Hinkle Fieldhouse should be rocking for a visit from the Buckeyes.

Attention hoopheads: 20 pressing questions as madness tips off

Butler: Is Butler the new Gonzaga?

It's not uncommon for mid-major teams to creep to the top of the rankings, but most of the time they are unable to sustain that kind of success over time. Gonzaga has been the lone exception over the last 15 years, but now Butler is getting ready to match, and possibly surpass, what Gonzaga has done.

Last year at this time, Butler was beginning practice after losing four starters from a team that had won 30 games and took Tennessee to the wire in the second round of the NCAA tournament. Yet, the Bulldogs still went 26-6 and earned their eighth NCAA bid in 13 years. Now, the Bulldogs return four starters, only one of whom is a senior.

How good is Butler? Matt Howard, a 6-8 junior forward, was last year's Horizon League Player of the Year, and he might only be the second-best player on this team. That's because 6-8 sophomore Gordon Hayward returns after excelling for Team USA at the 19-and-under championships last summer. Hayward is a prodigious scorer who last season sank seven threes in a game on two occasions (including against Ohio State). The other players who started last season as freshmen, Shelvin Mack and Ronald Nored, will also benefit from having a year under their belts.

A tough preseason schedule that includes the 76 Classic should help determine if they're that good.

UIC is picked 5th in the Horizon League, but since the preview mentions Tori Boyd and Spencer Stewart as major contributors without any reservations, it was probably written early in the summer.
